My College Teacher is My Children's Mom-Chapter 640
"Ouch, my god, the bugs here are so vicious! The medicine I brought is completely useless!"
"Same here. I’ve sprayed half a bottle of repellent and it did nothing. My arms are covered in bites."
"I wonder if the insects here are poisonous. Last time I got bitten, I was in the hospital for three days before the swelling went down!"
"I brought cockroach killer, and it was useless!"
"Mine works, but I don’t have much left..."
"What brand is it? Let us try some!"
Taking advantage of the break, everyone began complaining that the products they’d brought were ineffective. Their line of work often involved filming on location, so insect repellent was an absolute necessity. As someone had mentioned before, one should never underestimate tiny insects; sometimes, they could be fatal. But different places around the world had different kinds of bugs, and no single repellent worked on them all.
As they were talking, the makeup artist came over to ask with concern if the father-daughter pair, Lin Feng and Xiao Bao, had been bitten.
Xiao Bao shook her head. "Nope! Daddy put medicine on me, so I won’t get bitten."
The makeup artist took a closer look and saw that, sure enough, Xiao Bao’s skin was still fair and smooth, without a single bite mark. Lin Feng was also bite-free.
"Wow! What are you using that’s so effective?"
"I mixed this myself. It works very well. Do you want to try some?" Lin Feng offered, taking out a spray bottle and a container of powder for her.
The makeup artist thanked him and quickly applied the repellent to her skin. In just a short while, she realized it was incredibly effective and rushed to share the good news with the others. The rest of the crew, including the on-set director, were suffering terribly. The local bugs were simply too relentless; even thick clothing offered no protection.
"Should we go ask if he has any more?"
"You go, you’re more familiar with him."
"What do you mean, ’more familiar’? We’ve only exchanged a few words."
After they spent a while passing the buck, the makeup artist couldn’t watch any longer. "Alright, stop arguing. I’ll go ask."
She went over to Lin Feng and asked if he had any more to spare, explaining that the rest of the crew was covered in bites. This situation was untenable, especially since they had to camp there for the night. What’s more, filming hadn’t even started yet.
"From what the on-set director was saying, it sounds like he’s going to change the script. Who knows when we’ll be able to shoot."
They weren’t far away, so Lin Feng had heard every word of their conversation. He generously took out more of his supplies. "Here, use this."
He had plenty to spare in his storage space, anyway.
The makeup artist was stunned. "But what about you and Xiao Bao? Do you have enough left?"
Lin Feng smiled faintly. "We have more. Take this and give it to them."
The makeup artist thanked him profusely and went to distribute the repellent. Soon after, everyone discovered that Lin Feng’s remedy was indeed the real deal, and they came over one by one to thank him.
Lin Feng simply waved it off. "It’s nothing."
It was just a concoction made from some very common ingredients. The total cost of what he gave them was less than a hundred yuan.
The on-set director was on the phone with someone called "Card God" for over ten minutes. When he hung up, his entire body was itching miserably.
"What are you all doing?"
His assistant immediately sprayed him down and dusted him with the powder. "This is from Xiao Bao’s dad. It’s a great insect repellent. The whole crew is using it."
The director was skeptical but relieved. "I’m going to revise the script. We’ll shoot at dawn tomorrow."
The assistant quickly relayed the news to everyone.
Lin Feng and the makeup artist went to remove the little one’s makeup. Soon, the grubby Xiao Bao was clean and fresh again. As a growing child, Xiao Bao announced that she was hungry.
"Daddy will cook in just a moment. Wait here."
There were four tents at the campsite. One belonged to the on-set director and his assistant, one was for Lin Feng and Xiao Bao, and the other two housed the male and female crew members separately. The campsite was in a protected area, so there was no danger of wild animals. They could sleep safely at night.
First, however, they had to deal with dinner. Most of the crew had brought things like compressed biscuits, water, and bread.
Lin Feng had known they would be filming on location. If things went smoothly, they’d stay one night; if not, it could be two. So, after his call with Zhang Yuxi, he had gone to the hotel kitchen and bought a good number of supplies.
Once it was announced there would be no filming for the night, Lin Feng took a small stove out of his bag, followed by a small pot, and began to cook. He had specially fitted the alcohol stove with a small valve to make it windproof. Lin Feng brought some water to a boil, added their favorite vegetables, and then put in some dried noodles. The pot was small, so he could only cook one portion at a time. He had also prepared condiments and a fried egg in advance, so a fragrant bowl of noodles was ready in no time.
Lin Feng set up a small folding laptop table and had Xiao Bao eat inside the tent, worried that debris from the surrounding trees might fall into her bowl. A little while later, Lin Feng’s noodles were ready, too. Before going inside to eat, he placed a sweet potato in the stove’s dying embers.
The rest of the crew exchanged impressed glances, surprised that Lin Feng was so well-prepared. As the delicious aroma wafted over, their own dry rations suddenly seemed much less appealing.
After they finished their noodles, Lin Feng and Xiao Bao wiped their mouths with wet tissues and went to check on the sweet potato. By seven o’clock, the sky was completely dark, and the crew had set up outdoor lights. Lin Feng checked the sweet potato; it still needed a little more time. The temperature difference between day and night was significant here, so Lin Feng took a thin sweater from his bag for Xiao Bao to wear.
While Xiao Bao was outside squatting and keeping an eye on the sweet potato, Lin Feng took two quilts out of his storage space. He added another layer of insulation pads to their tent floor and sprinkled a perimeter of repellent powder both inside and outside the tent to keep bugs from crawling in. He hung a small lamp from the tent’s ceiling and set out Xiao Bao’s toiletries and a small potty, which he lined with a trash bag and placed just outside the tent.
Only after finishing all these preparations did Lin Feng finally have a moment to catch his breath.
Xiao Bao was watching the makeup artist play a game on her phone when Lin Feng called out that the sweet potato was ready. Xiao Bao had been a bit constipated for the past few days, and he wasn’t sure if it was due to the dry air in the studio or from not drinking enough water. For his little girl, sweet potatoes were the best remedy.
After she finished the sweet potato, Lin Feng had her brush her teeth and wash her feet in a folding plastic basin.
"Let’s get to bed early tonight. We have to be up early for filming tomorrow!"
Xiao Bao nodded.
However, sleeping in a tent was a new experience, and the little girl was too excited to sleep, chattering away endlessly. Lin Feng couldn’t do much about it. After he urged her to sleep a few times, she finally drifted off. He set an alarm, activated one of his Skills, and fell into a deep sleep while holding his daughter.
「Just past four in the morning.」
Lin Feng heard movement outside. Listening closely, he realized the on-set director was already up and busy.
Lin Feng got out of bed and used the small pot to fry an egg for his daughter and warm up some milk for her. Worried that wouldn’t be enough, he also prepared a small bowl of rice noodles. He left the bowl on a steamer rack over the small stove to keep it warm, then turned to wake Xiao Bao.
Xiao Bao was still groggy. Wanting her to sleep a little longer, Lin Feng made an exception and dressed her himself. He then gave her a small cup of warm water to drink.
With all the noise outside, Xiao Bao soon woke up completely. "Are we going to start filming now?"
"The director hasn’t given the order," Lin Feng replied, "but they’ve already started setting up the scene."
