My College Teacher is My Children's Mom-Chapter 612 The Changes of the Four Treasures
It’s better for adults not to meddle in things children can handle themselves. Seeing Little Bao solve the problem on her own reassured the couple. Once she started taekwondo to build her strength, they would be even more at ease.
Their four older children were all away at school and could protect themselves, so there was nothing to worry about there. But this little one had just started kindergarten; there would be plenty more worries in the years to come.
In the evening, Lin Feng cooked a huge, delicious meal, and soon after, video calls from the older siblings started coming in.
"Little Bao, today is June 1st, Children’s Day! Happy holiday!"
"I couldn’t be with you today, but next Children’s Day, I’ll definitely be by your side!"
"Whatever you want, your big brother will buy it for you when I get back, no matter how expensive!"
"Did you have fun today, Little Bao? What did you do with Mom and Dad?"
Everyone was asking questions at once. Little Bao chatted with them while playing with her toys. Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi were washing dishes in the kitchen, listening to the children’s voices from the dining room.
How they missed them!
"Honey, should we buy a dishwasher?"
"It’s alright. Handwashing is fine." Lin Feng had grown fond of doing housework. He took great pride in keeping the house spotlessly clean.
Through the phone, they heard the voice of their fourth son.
"Dad, we’ll send Little Bao a red envelope later. You can use that money to buy whatever she wants."
"Okay!" Lin Feng responded.
Little Bao played with her toys for a bit before getting bored and joining the conversation in earnest.
"Fourth Brother, how did you get so dark? But your teeth are so white!"
How could he not be tanned with daily training? But even with a tan, he was still handsome and popular with the girls.
Fourth Brother chuckled. "Do you like that your brother’s dark? Do you think I’m ugly?"
He decided that if his little sister thought he was ugly, he would definitely apply sunscreen during training in hopes of gradually lightening his skin again. When his sister was little, she didn’t understand beauty or ugliness. Now that she was in school, he had to help cultivate her sense of aesthetics.
Little Bao said unconvincingly, "Whether you’re dark or not, you’re always handsome! You’re the most handsome brother."
Their second sister couldn’t stop laughing.
The insincerity was written all over Little Bao’s face; her eyes showed disdain while her words professed love.
Fourth Brother was heartbroken! Alright, it was decided. He would apply sunscreen in the future. He couldn’t let his little sister look down on him.
The second sister propped her chin on her hand and asked, "Little Bao, do you miss your second sister?"
Little Bao nodded. "I miss all of you so much! When are you coming back?"
Little Bao had grown up in the arms of her older brothers and sisters, who had watched over her every step of the way. They had changed her diapers, fed her bottles, and taken care of her meticulously. It was precisely because of this deep affection that they spoiled her rotten.
Their second sister made a solemn promise. "Next Children’s Day, no matter how important anything else is, we’ll come back to spend it with you."
The others all nodded in agreement.
Little Bao thought for a moment, then smiled.
"Actually, you don’t have to. Dad says you’re all very busy and that studying hard is a very important thing."
"You should just focus on your studies. We can have a video call then, and it’ll be just the same."
This really touched her older brothers and sisters.
Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi finished tidying the kitchen and sat down to watch TV with them.
"Fourth Brother, you’ve gotten even darker," Lin Feng teased his son.
Fourth Brother covered his face. "Dad, don’t say it. Little Bao was just giving me a hard time about it."
Little Bao quickly explained, "I wasn’t! Little Bao really likes her brother!"
That made Fourth Brother feel a little better.
Dabao, the eldest, asked about their parents’ health.
Lin Feng smiled. "Your mom and I are both doing well. You kids need to take care of yourselves out there, too. Dress warmly and don’t catch a cold. Don’t try to save money where you shouldn’t; our family doesn’t need you to. As long as you all are doing well, your mom and I will be much happier, you know?"
The children had matured a lot, their facial features now more defined. Especially Dabao, who had always been the steadiest of them all; he now wore glasses, making him look even more dignified and scholarly. Their second sister had cut her hair short, which gave her a sharp and beautiful look. Their third sister, Sanbao, had also changed quite a bit. She had clearly styled her hair, making her look very fashionable. She wore trendy rings, and her social media was often full of photos from her performances. She was still the most delicate and beautiful of the four, and many entertainment companies had tried to sign her as an actress or model, all of which she refused. She looked the youngest of the siblings. As for Fourth Brother, it went without saying: he was so tanned they could barely recognize him, but his teeth were bright white, and his smile was sunny and carefree.
They updated their parents on their recent situations, assuring them everything was going well. Lin Feng hoped they weren’t just reporting the good news while hiding the bad.
"If anything is troubling you, you can talk to your mom and me. It’s best if we can offer some advice. But even if we can’t, it’s still good for us to be a sounding board, right? No matter what you encounter out there, Mom and Dad will always support you. We’re your strong backup."
The children were deeply moved. It was their first time away from home for school, and it would be a lie to say they didn’t miss it. The food wasn’t as good as their dad’s cooking, and they missed their mom’s occasional nagging and care. They missed Little Bao’s incessant chattering. They had to learn everything from new dietary habits and adjusting to the new climate and food, to navigating social relationships. Even though they were excellent students and highly adaptable, they still missed the feeling of home, thinking of their parents and Little Bao every day.
The nightly video calls had become essential. Because of the time difference, it was already morning where they were. On weekends, Lin Feng would also call them in the morning. He would clean and prepare free-range chickens and ducks, marinate them for a day, then vacuum-seal them to send to the children. Besides that, he also sent them the cured meats and pig ears he made for the New Year. They weren’t valuable things, but he just wanted his children to have a taste of home.
After hanging up the video call, he took Little Bao to bed.
Rolling around on the bed, Little Bao asked, "Dad, is studying at school really hard?"
This little one hated doing anything troublesome or difficult, unless she herself wanted to. Lin Feng decided to take this opportunity, while she was still young, to change her perspective.
"Not at all. Studying is a very joyful thing. Otherwise, why would your brothers and sisters go so far away just to study?"
Little Bao said, "Oh," clearly unconvinced. She didn’t like studying; she liked to play.
Lin Feng was speechless. Her tone was as firm as could be.
He smiled and asked, "But if you don’t study, you won’t be able to read. If you can’t read, you’ll get lost and won’t be able to do anything. What will you do when you grow up?"
Little Bao blinked her big eyes and asked worriedly, "Will I starve to death?"
Lin Feng was about to say no. But on second thought... "Yes," he said.
Little Bao panicked. "Then what do I do?"
Lin Feng quickly replied, "Then you have to study hard in school."
Little Bao’s face fell. "But I don’t like it."
For some reason, she never had a good word to say about school or writing.
Full of apprehension, Little Bao eventually drifted into a hazy sleep.
