Chapter 268: Can We Be More Than Friends?

(Zaylen)

Stella and I stayed with Arata, comforting her until she fell asleep. Mom took over from us and decided to stay the night with her.

Aunt Huria returned to her home but Stella stayed behind.

"Want to get drunk and watch the stars like we used to in our childhood?" She asked.

This was really a kind of day and I wanted nothing but that.

"Sure, let’s grab some wine and sit on the patio swing." Stella winked at my suggestion.

My phone rang and I took it out.

It was Caysir. Arata had told me on the way that Karsten would most probably be sending Caysir to be her personal guard, and we had to accommodate him.

The man had saved my sister’s life and I was more than happy to accommodate him.

"Grab some wine and I will meet you outside after answering this call."

Stella nodded while I swiped on my phone and received the call.

"Sir, it’s Caysir speaking. I have arrived outside your house and I would like to resume my duties."

That was fast and he already knew the way to our house. Karsten had real connections now.

I went out to meet him, and Caysir was very respectful, unlike the other two guards, who talked minimally and stared more.

"Is Miss Arata resting?" He concernedly asked.

"Yes! She is. You should rest too and assume your duties from tomorrow. I will have the house helper bring you some food and arrange for your accommodations." I hoped Baba wouldn’t raise too many objections. Caysir was the only one he tolerated, if anyone else came, there could be a proper war outside our home.

"No, no. Mr Karsten has already arranged for our lodgings. There are two of us, and we will take turns. I promise we won’t bother you but will remain in case enemies try anything funny."

Karsten seemed to have thought of everything. "Won’t you be cold?"

"This is nothing compared to Marcia’s cold and I have warm clothes." He pointed towards his attire.

Even with my instance, Caysir refused to stay with us or rest, so I had house help bring him some food. He preferred to guard from outside so he wouldn’t interfere with our daily routines.

"Let me know if you need my help," with that said, he stayed outside and I closed the door of the mansion.

It was cold but not as freezing cold as Marica City. I headed towards the patio swing where Stella was waiting for me with an open wine bottle in her hand. I could tell she had already taken a few swigs out of it.

Her hair was open, and her lips were wet as she smiled openly at me.

"Took you long enough, I was about to finish it without you." She thrust the bottle into my hand and patted the place next to her, so I could sit.

I flopped myself down, the liquid sloshed inside the bottle as I leaned against the padded back of the swing.

Bringing the bottle to my lips, I slowly took a small sip and let the liquid run down my throat.

Stella’s warm body pressed against mine. Her hand sneaked around my arm while she placed her head on my shoulder.

She drew in a deep breath and snuggled with me. That had always been her favourite position to sit with me, and recently, we had gotten even closer, spending all those nights together while tending to Arata.

We were getting more and more used to each other.

"Do you know the stars we are seeing might not even be there now?" She pointed to a bright star in the sky. Her eyelids half closed a serene smile spread on her lips.

Stella had morphed into this gorgeous woman and I could feel myself watching her more and more in the past two months.

"Yes, the universe is so vast and holds such marvels." I extended the bottle towards her. She accepted and took a small sip, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.

A gloominess fell over her. "Will Arata be okay? I can’t help but worry about her."

Placing my head over hers, I took in a deep whiff. She smelled like chocolates and caramel.

"I don’t know, things are pretty messed up and I think they will get worse. But we will be there for her."

We sat there in silence for a while, just passing around the bottle and drinking.

She then asked. "Why are all of us so unlucky in terms of love?"

My heart jolted at her words but it was true. None of us had been able to find someone reliable, or, in my case, no one at all.

"I don’t want to die alone," she lamented, finishing the bottle with one last sip.

"You won’t be alone. I will be there with you always."

Stella turned her head to watch me with glazed eyes. She was drunk, I could tell.

"You promise?" She asked with a cheeky smile, her cheeks tinted pink.

"If I won’t find anyone by the age of 30. Will you marry me?" She innocently blinked and I knew she was joking.

"I promise." I extended my pinky towards her and she intertwined hers with mine.

"Yahhh! You are such an amazing friend, Zaylen. I would always choose you over any crappy boyfriends when they make me." She slumped over me with these words and softly kissed my cheek.

Feelings unknown to me invoked inside my heart, and somehow, I wanted to see how her lips would taste on mine.

’Stupid idea. Get a grip, she is your friend,’ I reprimanded myself.

What was she talking about?

Were my suspicions right and that bastard made her choose?

Did she choose me?

Flabbergasted, I stared at her as she snuggled on my chest now, using half of my body as her personal pillow.

"Such....a good friend you... are." She yawned twice and closed her eyes. I held her close, my hands slipping in her soft caramel-shaded hair as I slowly combed it and thought.

Could we be more than just friends?
