Chapter 258: Statement To The Police

(Arata)

As if understanding my train of thought. Zaylen sympathetically said.

"I will respect whatever your decision will be. I want you to be happy for once. But I don’t want you to suffer any more than you already have. If Karsten is going to hurt you more, I don’t want him near you."

His eyes then dipped towards my belly.

"Even if you have to make a difficult decision, I will be there for you. Both of us will."

My brother passed a silent understanding with Stella, and she nodded, too.

"We understand what you must have been going through, facing everything alone. I wish you had reached out, Arata. But now we are by your side in this difficult time. We won’t let you feel isolated."

Her lips bunched up as tears swelled in her eyes. I knew what they were trying to say.

"I am keeping the baby," I firmly told them.

Both of them understandably smiled at my decision as I continued.

"And I don’t know where I stand with Karsten. I need time to come to terms with what I feel about him. He did some questionable stuff, and I haven’t forgiven him for that because trust, once broken, is hard to build." I slowly breathed in. My very own words pained me.

"And I worry about Baba. I think I have hurt him enough with my secrets and questionable decisions. It’s time to ponder over my life choices."

They nodded in understanding. Stella was silently crying, her hand rubbed my cropped head. She didn’t say much but I could understand her line of thinking. fгeewebnovёl.com

"So just to be clear, Karsten wasn’t stalking you. He just met you as a masked man?" Zaylen asked and I nodded. I offered them a brief summary of what Ranold had told me and they were shocked.

"Ths Police have only revealed some of the information to us. But this is messed up." Zaylen shook his head in disbelief.

Someone entered through the door again, and this time, it was a female doctor.

"Hello! I am Dr Fohr. I will be attending to you today. So how are we feeling?" She kept her smile to a minimum and approached me wearing gloves.

I imagined Karsten to be behind the change of doctors.

"Better," I answered as Stella and Zaylen stood up and made space for the doctor.

She examined me thoroughly with the help of the nurse, changed some meds and passed instructions to my family on the next course of action.

"Arata, I won’t lie. It will take time for you to recover but it will happen smoothly and gradually. We have the best professionals here, who will help you every step of the way."

I understood she was speaking about consulting a therapist and with the kind of mental state I had, I knew I needed one, a lot of sessions with someone.

"I understand."

After Dr Fohr had left, the police arrived for my statement. Stella and Zaylen stayed by my side.

"Hi! Arata, I am Detective Pimber, this is my partner Hastian." Both detectives introduced themselves, and I just nodded; my eyes were already becoming heavy.

I guessed the doctor had given me a relaxing med combined with a pain med. Because of the way my face and body were broken, the pain meds were the only thing keeping me pain-free, at least physically.

"Hello!" I quietly answered.

"I know this is a difficult time but can you take us through the events of the night of your kidnapping and everything that followed?" Detective Pimber asked, making an unease rise in my stomach.

I didn’t want to go through these events again and I understood why Karsten hadn’t been allowed inside. They wanted to take my testimony without his presence.

I needed to exonerate him, he had no hand in my kidnapping. What happened between us was our personal matter and not connected to this.

I had to be strong. Zaylen’s assuring hand rested on my arm, letting me know he was there and wouldn’t let me spiral. So I began, telling them everything from the beginning.

I told them how Ranold tried to befriend me. How he planted evidence and acted sweet and caring while all he was trying to do was isolate me and pin me against Karsten.

I narrated everything about him, whatever he had told me and all the heinous acts he did. Not hiding anything and emphasising how I had made a wrong assumption earlier because I was misled about Karsten.

They were recording my testimony as well as jotting it down.

Stella was silently crying, listening to everything I was saying, while Zaylen’s hold on my arm had tightened a fraction, letting me know how tense he was.

"Karsten is innocent. He not only saved me two days ago, he has done it before too," I concluded, hoping they would drop all charges against Karsten.

"Thank you for your cooperation, Miss Zyair. Anything you could tell us where Ranold could have gone. Like he mentioned any hiding places he had which could help us in tracking him down," Detective Hastian asked in a hopeful tone.

I simply shook my head.

"I am sorry, no. But please, catch him as soon as you can, before he hurts someone else. Also, his mother is very delusional. I learnt that while carrying out conversations with her. She brings up nonsense which doesn’t even exist."

I said that on purpose so they would think she was not right in the head. It would lead to her words having no weightage in the court of law. If she started rambling about her lover and that grave, my family could get into trouble and I didn’t want that.

But I needed to speak to my parents about it. The truth of what happened to Doran had to be dug out. They couldn’t be killers like she had claimed, but there was something in that story, and I would unearth it in time.

"We will catch them soon. Thank you for your statement. Wishing you a speedy recovery."

Detectives left after thanking me and my eyes wavered to my shocked brother and best friend.

"You are so brave, and we couldn’t be more proud," Zaylen whispered, emotions clogging his throat, and I let him hug me, followed by Stella.

I was just thankful that Baba wasn’t here to listen to my statement. It would utterly break him.
