Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 96: He Even Hits Women?
Audrey Sutton couldn’t help but think of Miles Sterling, always feeling there was an indescribable strangeness in the relationship between the siblings.
"I’ll give her a call to check in."
Jasper Jones: "Alright, just ask if something happened to her, but don’t mention me... I haven’t confessed to her yet, but now it seems it’s not going to work out. Just ask and make sure she’s okay."
After hanging up Jasper’s call, Audrey immediately looked up Vanessa Sterling’s phone number, but when she dialed, it prompted that the phone was turned off.
Though she wasn’t particularly close to Vanessa, Audrey felt that Vanessa was someone who was very considerate of others’ feelings. Even if she wanted to reject Jasper, she would do it in a very gentle way, and not resort to something as extreme as deleting him as a friend.
Her intuition told her that something might have happened on Vanessa’s side.
She glanced over at Shane Warner, who was lying on a chair pretending to nap with sunglasses on. Knowing he was friends with Miles, she got up and moved over to his side, reaching out to tap him on the arm.
"Wake up, I want to ask you something."
He looked unhappy, muttering one word: "Speak."
"How well do you know Miles Sterling?"
Hearing Audrey’s question, Shane finally opened his eyes, sat up, and removed his sunglasses. He looked at her, puzzled: "Why are you asking about him?"
Audrey didn’t beat around the bush: "I feel something’s strange between him and Vanessa, and now I can’t reach Vanessa. I want to know if it has something to do with him."
Shane lay back down on the chair, gazing at the blue sky with eyes slightly squinting, thinking for a moment before saying, "He has a bit of a temper."
"How so?"
"Easily angered. I remember he was dating a girl in college, and there were rumors that she was going out with another guy at night. That very night, she was taken away from school by an ambulance."
Audrey was stunned for a moment, a little incredulous as she tentatively asked, "Did Miles hit her?"
"That’s what I heard."
"He hits women too?!"
Shane didn’t respond, closing his eyes again.
Audrey grew more worried about Vanessa’s situation, feeling more and more like Vanessa was afraid of Miles, possibly because she had been hit by him.
The only person she could think to turn to now was Laura Yates, and she asked Laura if she could get in touch with Vanessa.
A few minutes later, Laura replied: "I got her on QQ. Vanessa said her phone broke, that’s why you couldn’t reach her."
Only then did Audrey feel relieved, but she still couldn’t understand why Vanessa had blocked Jasper.
Since Jasper didn’t seem to be pursuing the truth, Audrey decided not to obsess over it either.
Life on the island was quite pleasant. In the mornings, Audrey began to go on runs with Shane, even though she always lagged behind him.
If the weather was good during the day, Audrey would take him out to sea on her grandfather’s boat; her grandfather had his own group of fishing buddies who would take their boats out to fish when they had free time.
Fishing used to be about making a living, but now it was a hobby and interest for this group of people.
Shane seemed to have some experience with fishing too, getting along well with the group of anglers.
Especially pleasing her grandfather, who would often pull him along to discuss fishing techniques when there was nothing else to do.
He always had enough patience for the elder, showing that he seemed to be someone who valued family bonds, though his situation at the Warner didn’t seem to let him feel much of that family warmth.
At first, Audrey was worried he wouldn’t adapt well to this place, but after he arrived, he seemed to relax a lot more than before; perhaps for him, this time was a kind of enjoyment.
Shopping together, watching movies, basking in the sun on the beach...
During this time, she and he were practically inseparable.
When she was home working on her paintings, he would set up his easel on the balcony to work on his design drafts.
Occasionally, he would borrow her computer to attend virtual meetings, handling some work matters.
Besides that, he had no other interactions with the outside world.
No Clarissa Morgan, no Lan Irving, and no other women with ulterior motives.
Audrey didn’t know what this time meant to him, but she felt it was the happiest summer vacation she ever had.
Even though the vacation was short, every moment would be cherished in her heart forever.
Because she didn’t know if she would get to spend the next summer here with him again.
On the day they left the island, it was raining, and raindrops formed small puddles on the sea surface.
Audrey sat by the window on the boat, watching the sea that was less calm in the wind and rain, with her heart seemingly tossed in waves as well.
Unwilling to leave.
Unwilling to leave this place, unwilling to end this way of life, she just wanted to stay on the island with him, living a life occupied only by the two of them.
Turning her head to look at him as he was on the phone, the conversation was all about work.
These ten days felt short for her, but for him, there must have been plenty of work piling up, waiting for him to resolve when they returned.
Audrey closed her eyes, and after a few minutes, pretended to sleep, deliberately leaning her head on his shoulder.
She didn’t know how he reacted; at that moment of doubt and hesitation, she felt more settled doing this.
Shane glanced at her, gently wrapped up the call, then draped his jacket over her legs clad in a short skirt, and then didn’t move much again.
Initially, Audrey didn’t actually fall asleep, perhaps lost in her thoughts for half an hour, she eventually dozed off.
When they disembarked, the sky was overcast, and the rain was pouring harder.
They took a cab straight to the airport and flew back to Rivia.
She used to frequently travel between Driftwood Isle and Rivia, but this was the first time Audrey felt so resistant to returning here.
"I’ll drop you off first, then head to the company, I’ll come pick up General and your cat tonight."
Audrey nodded, turning her head to watch the departing scenery through the car window, so familiar yet so strange.
Shane suddenly reached out to touch her forehead: "Are you catching a cold?"
Audrey looked at him puzzled, "No."
"Why so listless?"
Audrey simply said: "Because school is about to start."
"I thought you’d be eager for school to start."
Audrey didn’t reply, turning her gaze back to the window.
The weather in Rivia was sunny, and as it was late August, it wasn’t as hot as it had previously been.
Shane helped her drag her suitcase into the elevator, gave a few reminders, then left with the driver’s car.
Audrey stood by the elevator door, watching his car drive away before entering the elevator to go upstairs.
She didn’t know why she had become so emotional; maybe after having experienced so much beauty, the thought of possibly losing it all one day made her anxious.
