Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 602: Stay Away from Her
Shane looked coldly at Heath, his voice flat with a hint of chill, asking, "Tell me what you did first."
Heath pouted and said nonchalantly, "Got into a fight, didn’t I? Nobody backed down, so we went at it. Don’t be fooled by my face being bruised; that kid’s not any better off than me. I beat him so bad he spat blood!"
Shane’s tone grew even colder, "So, are you here to show off your skills to me?"
Heath grinned ingratiatingly and said, "No, Cousin, I just... I’m out of money and need a bit to go to the hospital for a checkup."
Shane: "What’s the point of checking minor external injuries on thick-skinned guys like you? And how long has it been since your paycheck? Where’s the money?"
Heath mumbled quietly, "Got the paycheck, didn’t even get to warm it up before paying someone back with it, still owe over ten thousand now."
After hearing Heath’s words, not only did Shane’s face darken, but Audrey also felt a sense of anger that there was a disgrace in the family, repeatedly misbehaving daily, using Shane’s name to act all high and mighty. Audrey was itching to give Heath a good beating.
"Cousin, what’s the deal with this Sterling family? Isn’t there going to be trouble?"
Shane: "Any trouble will be your trouble."
Audrey thought about it; the Sterlings mostly interacted with Quentin Sterling and Miles Sterling.
There’s no way Quentin would be involved in street fights, so it had to be Miles.
Audrey couldn’t figure it out, so she asked Heath, "What did you guys fight over?"
Heath smiled sheepishly and said, "Because of a girl, really. I don’t know her well, just saw her once at a comic convention before, and then ran into her by the roadside this morning. So I followed her to the supermarket, wanted to chat her up and maybe get her number, but then that jerk Sterling kid popped out and punched me without a word. He had the nerve to sneak up on me from behind, otherwise I would have dodged it."
Audrey thought for a moment, then asked, "What does the girl look like? Is she short, skinny, with long black straight hair?"
Heath was surprised and nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, Sister-in-law, do you know her?"
Audrey just felt that the only girl that would make Miles Sterling fight so fiercely could only be Vanessa Sterling.
Yet, she couldn’t understand Miles Sterling; when others bullied Vanessa, he knew to protect her, but when he fought himself, he was reckless.
"Sister-in-law, is she your friend? I think she’s so cute! Can you give me her contact information?"
Audrey glared at Heath and snapped, "You stay away from her!"
"Buzz—buzz—"
Shane’s phone rang from his pocket, and Audrey and Heath fell silent, watching Shane pull his phone out of his pocket, his dark eyes deepening, as he walked to the balcony outside the living room to take the call.
Audrey watched Shane worriedly, with a sense of foreboding in her heart.
Seeing that Shane was away, Heath quietly called to Audrey, "Sister-in-law..."
"No!"
Heath: "...I haven’t even finished saying yet!"
Audrey sternly said to Heath, "Stay quiet, behave yourself, don’t cause trouble for your cousin, or I won’t let you off the hook!"
Soon, Shane hung up the phone and returned to the house, saying to Heath, "Let’s go."
Heath stood up in a daze and asked Shane, "Where are we going, Cousin?"
Shane answered Heath with a somber face, "Hospital."
Heath chuckled, "Cousin, you’re so busy, you don’t have to personally accompany me, just give me the medical fee and I’ll go myself."
Shane didn’t respond to Heath but pointed to the foyer, "Change your shoes and wait for me outside."
Heath pursed his lips, hesitated, seemingly wanting to resist a little, but seeing Shane’s not so good expression, he dared not say more and reluctantly went to the door to change his shoes.
Shane picked up the car keys from the coffee table, walked over to Audrey, bent down to kiss her forehead, and said in a deep voice, "I might not be back for lunch; stay home and don’t wander around. If you’re bored, call Phoebe King over to keep you company."
"Where are you going?"
Shane rubbed Audrey’s head, smiled, and said, "Taking this kid to the hospital, then back to the company to handle some things."
Audrey studied him suspiciously; her intuition suggested it couldn’t be as simple as he made it sound.
"There’s plenty of food in the fridge, just make whatever you feel like eating for lunch; I’ll cook something good for you when I get back."
Having said that, Shane headed toward the foyer to change his shoes, grabbed the coat from the clothing rack by the door, and softly bade Audrey farewell, "I’m leaving. Be good and wait for me to come back."
Audrey nodded, watching Shane close the door, but her heart couldn’t shake off a certain unease.
He drove straight to the hospital, where Shane dropped Heath in the hospital lobby, saying, "Register for your checkup yourself; I’ll come down to pay in a while."
Not giving Heath a chance to argue back, Shane went to the elevator area waiting for a call.
Heath sighed helplessly, feeling his cousin’s money was too hard to trick into his hands; he had just wanted some medical fees for a bit of fun, but now the money never even passed through his hands.
Shane took the elevator straight to the emergency room entrance, seeing Helen Holloway sitting on a chair outside the door crying, with the nanny who had stayed in the hospital recently to help care for Wallace Warner sitting beside her comforting her.
Shane walked quietly over, looking calm, but those dark pupils weren’t so composed.
He was just using his unruffled expression to mask his complicated inner emotions.
"Shane..." Helen’s voice choked, "Your father this time, I’m afraid..."
Seemingly unwilling to continue, Helen hugged Shane and sobbed.
At first, everyone hoped to extend the patient’s life with medical means, but after seeing the patient suffer to the point of wishing for death, they thought perhaps death was a relief for him.
Shane’s heart was truly not deeply saddened, maybe because since childhood, he hadn’t received much affection from his father, and now, knowing the truth about his brother’s death, he was even less sure what emotions to feel towards Wallace Warner.
Sadness wasn’t quite it, at most it was an introspection on humanity and a sigh over the twists of fate.
Reflecting, if Wallace Warner hadn’t taken the wrong step back then, what kind of ending might it be today.
Outside the quiet emergency room, footsteps sounded again.
Shane looked up at the sound, and in that moment, Vincent Warner stopped, looking at Shane with a heartache, seemingly wanting to approach him for comfort, yet dared not because of Shane’s hatred towards him.
On seeing Vincent appear, Helen furiously lunged at him, clutching his clothes, shouting, "What are you here for?! To laugh at us?! You killed Sean, and now are here to swagger, aren’t you?!"
