Chapter 572: Chapter 572: Stray Cat

On the bustling cross-river bridge, Vanessa Sterling carried some instant foods she had just bought from the supermarket, leisurely walking on the pedestrian path on the side of the bridge under the sun.

When she went out, she happened to meet Miles Sterling in the elevator, taking a woman upstairs. She could guess what they were going to do, so Vanessa didn’t want to go back so soon.

Walking slowly along the road, when passing by the convenience store downstairs, she saw a dirty little black kitten walking and meowing alone by the roadside.

She watched the kitten head towards the entrance of a convenience store, but before it reached the door, the store owner, holding a broom, unceremoniously swept it away, saying to her husband, who was reading a newspaper nearby, "It’s unlucky for a black cat to come around; business hasn’t been good lately."

Her husband didn’t intervene, merely commenting, "You’re just superstitious," while continuing to read his newspaper.

Vanessa slowed her pace, watching the little kitten stand by the street, looking around as if it didn’t know where to go, its soft, pitiful cries tugging at her heart.

After hesitating for a few seconds, she stepped forward and picked up the little kitten.

She walked on to her usual convenience store, asked the owner for a cardboard box, and put the kitten inside.

Whether from hunger or fear, the kitten continued meowing in the box.

Vanessa had no idea if Miles had left yet, fearing he wouldn’t like such small creatures and wouldn’t allow her to bring it home.

Worried that the kitten’s cries might alert Miles, she didn’t dare go straight upstairs when she reached downstairs.

She asked the store owner for some cat food. The kitten ate a little, and after being comforted for a while under the pavilion, it finally quieted down.

Vanessa noticed it had been a long time since she left, worrying Miles might start speculating wildly if she didn’t return soon.

Holding the cardboard box, she stepped into the elevator, full of worry, hoping Miles was in his room so she could quietly hide the kitten in her own room without him knowing.

Standing outside the apartment door, Vanessa didn’t open it immediately. Instead, she crouched and pressed her ear against the door to listen first.

She vaguely heard talking inside, but fortunately, it wasn’t any inappropriate, suggestive sounds.

Seeing the kitten relatively quiet at the moment, Vanessa planned to quickly dart into the room when she opened the door.

She mentally pictured herself entering the room, and only then, with trepidation, did she open the door.

"Get out!"

As soon as the door opened and she barely slipped inside, she heard Miles’s displeased voice.

She immediately froze in her tracks, stealing a glance toward the source of the voice, seeing Miles and the scantily clad woman both sitting on the sofa.

As Vanessa was about to quietly back out through the door, she heard the woman say, "Miles, why so harsh? I’ve specifically flown back from abroad to accompany you, where do you expect me to go?"

Hearing this, Vanessa belatedly realized that he wasn’t telling her to get out. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

She stood on the edge, unsure whether to enter or retreat.

Miles didn’t soften despite the woman’s coquetry, remaining frowning and displeased, then forcefully shaking off her arm that was clinging to him, "Don’t make me say it again."

The woman pouted, looking first at Miles, then at Vanessa standing by the door, sighing, picking up her clothes from the floor and dressing while mockingly saying, "Ah, new love makes one forget old love. But Miles, do take care of your health; you just finished with one, and you’ve called another girl over, don’t let youthful vigor lead to trouble."

Apparently annoyed by the woman’s noise, Miles grabbed her hair along with her scattered clothes and dragged her towards the door.

The woman’s screams startled Vanessa, who immediately stepped aside to clear the way, watching as Miles threw the woman out the door, then tossed the clothes on her, slamming the door shut with a "bang."

Swallowing nervously, Vanessa didn’t know what the woman had done to provoke Miles’s anger, but fearing he might vent his rage on her, she disregarded changing shoes and hurriedly carried the box to her room.

"Stop."

Vanessa’s steps halted, her back stiffening, feeling the hairs on her body stand up.

Hearing Miles’s footsteps approaching, Vanessa dared not even breathe heavily.

"What’s in the box?" His cold voice sounded from behind.

Swallowing again, Vanessa’s grip on the cardboard tightened with nervousness, she pursed her lips but before she could answer, the kitten meowed faintly from inside the box...

Startled, she hadn’t time to explain before Miles snatched the box from her hands, placing it on the coffee table and impatiently uncovering it.

The little black kitten’s fur was matted with dirt, entirely black save for those striking blue eyes.

Concerned, Vanessa cautiously approached, quietly saying, "... I’ll just keep it in my room; I won’t let it run around."

Staring at the little stray kitten in a daze as if deep in thought, Miles made no response.

With him saying nothing, Vanessa dared not act rashly, just anxiously standing by, waiting for his verdict.

When she first came to The Sterling, she was not unlike this stray kitten; thin and small, dressed in shabby clothes, cautious with everyone, those bright dark eyes leaving a deep impression...

After a few moments of stillness, Miles turned, picked up his shirt from the sofa, said nothing, and headed upstairs.

Startled, Vanessa remained there, watching him ascend, then glanced at the kitten tremulously trying to crawl out of the box.

Relieving a breath she didn’t know she’d held, she lifted the kitten from the box, thinking perhaps that meant he agreed?

Afraid of Miles changing his mind, Vanessa, upon seeing him go upstairs, immediately brought the kitten into her room.

In the unfamiliar setting, the kitten, still a bit frightened, unsteadily roamed around, sniffing here and there before hiding in a corner under her desk.

While living at The Sterling, Vanessa often interacted with cats, gaining some experience in caring for them.

However, as she couldn’t head out to buy supplies and food for the kitten today, she used a delivery app to order everything needed from a pet store.

Unable to bathe the young kitten, she nestled it on her lap, gently wiping its fur with baby wipes.

The world had never treated her kindly, yet it hadn’t changed the kindness within her.
