Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 521: Making a Mountain Out of a Molehill
Miles turned his head to look at Vanessa, as if he had listened to what she said, and also as if he hadn’t expected her to speak to him in this manner.
The commotion caught the attention of the hospital staff, who spoke a few words to both parties. Just then, the man’s number was called, and he rubbed his aching face with his hand, swearing as he followed the staff into the inner room.
Because of Vanessa’s earlier actions, a small bump appeared where she had been injected. Miles called over a passing nurse to help Vanessa get a new injection.
Only then did things quiet down a bit.
Miles sat beside her playing on his phone. He didn’t seem to be chatting with anyone, perhaps playing a game, and he remained silent.
Vanessa didn’t initiate any conversation with him either and just quietly waited for the IV to finish.
It was quite surprising that Miles had the patience to stay in the hospital for so long.
At noon, as soon as school was over, Audrey Sutton hurriedly took a cab to the hospital.
When she found Shane, the nurse was just removing his needle.
"Be sure to take your medicine on time when you get home, and remember to keep warm in the cold weather," the nurse gently advised while pressing a cotton swab over the spot on Shane’s hand where the needle was removed.
Shane reached out his hand: "I can do it myself, thank you."
The young nurse opened her mouth to say something, but Audrey came over quickly and called out to Shane: "Honey!"
Seeing Audrey arrive, the nurse reluctantly let go, smiled at Audrey, and walked away with her tools.
Audrey glanced at Shane, then at the nurse’s departing figure, and said to Shane with pointed intrigue, "You sure don’t lack for company, do you? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come."
Shane stood up, removed the cotton swab to check, and seeing that the needle mark was no longer bleeding, tossed the cotton swab into the nearby small trash can. He turned back and held Audrey’s wrist, saying, "It’s not company I lack, but I only want you by my side."
Audrey couldn’t help but smile slightly, feeling that words which might have sounded cheesy were transformed into the most heartwarming love confession by his serious tone.
The sullen feeling in her heart instantly dissipated.
With her arm linked around his, Audrey asked as they walked towards the stairs, "How are you feeling? Any better?"
Shane carefully held her as they descended the stairs, softly replying, "Yeah."
But after just a couple of steps, he put his hand to his mouth and coughed twice.
Audrey looked at him worriedly and said, "Why not go for another IV session another day? Hearing your cough makes my own throat ache."
Shane replied, "Let’s see how it goes tomorrow."
Audrey grumbled, "I told you to wear more clothes, but you didn’t listen. You look strong, but you’re more delicate than me."
...
At the restaurant, Shane ordered five dishes and a soup, but took only a plate of stir-fried beef for himself, separating it from the rest of the food which was all placed in front of Audrey.
Audrey looked at him in confusion and frowned, "What’s this about now?"
Shane replied calmly, "I’ve caught a cold. It’s better if we don’t share the same dish."
Audrey said, "That’s a bit over the top."
Shane advised, "It’s better to be cautious."
Audrey observed him for a few seconds, and seeing him start to eat as if nothing was wrong, she picked up her chopsticks, served him a bowl of soup, and worriedly added two lemon chicken wings to his plate, as if afraid of neglecting him.
Shane glanced at her and said, "Eat your own food."
Audrey picked up a chicken wing with her chopsticks and muttered as she gnawed on it, "Such a fuss over nothing."
That night, Audrey discovered that separating their dishes wasn’t the most excessive measure. He even wanted to sleep in a separate bed.
After school in the afternoon, Audrey received a call from Shane, saying, "I’ve decided to stay at the office for a couple of days until my cold gets better before coming home."
Audrey frowned, utterly confused, "Are you serious or joking?"
On the other end, he coughed a few times before answering, "Do I sound like I’m joking? I’m fine with medication and injections, but if I pass the cold to you, it wouldn’t be good. Let’s avoid contact for a couple of days. I called Phoebe to keep you company. Pretend I’m on a business trip for a few days, and I’ll be fine by then."
Audrey said, "What are you doing? I was only joking when I said that."
Shane replied, "I’m not joking. Don’t come looking for me for the next couple of days. I’ll come find you once I’m better."
Audrey frowned, "Who’s going to look after you at the company? You’re just making me worry."
Shane said, "I’ll take care of myself."
After all, he wanted to get better quickly so he could go back and be with her.
Audrey remained silent, clearly still not wanting to agree to his decision. She knew he was doing it for her good, being cautious, but she felt it was completely unnecessary.
Last night, she had casually joked about what would happen if he infected her. She hadn’t expected Shane to take it to heart.
"If you miss me, just give me a call. I’ll check in at the hospital again tomorrow. Don’t worry."
Audrey also knew she couldn’t sway Shane once he made a decision. She had no choice but to agree, "Alright then. Do you have enough bedding at the office? Should I bring you a thick quilt?"
Shane said, "I prepared this afternoon and packed my clothes. Don’t worry about me. Take care of yourself, and don’t think you can order takeout all day just because I’m not at home. If you really don’t want to cook, let Phoebe drive you home to eat."
Audrey answered dejectedly, "Got it. Take your medicine on time, and come back soon."
Reluctantly ending the call, Audrey absentmindedly returned home.
In the past, when he was away on business trips for three to five days, she never felt the time drag on. It would just pass.
Now, knowing he was just a few kilometers away but unable to meet him, she felt a sense of frustration.
The entire next day, from morning until night, Audrey didn’t see him. The more they stayed in touch via phone, the more she wanted to go see him.
In the evening, after dinner, Audrey and Phoebe sat on the living room sofa, watching a comedy film on TV.
Phoebe snacked on potato chips, occasionally bursting into laughter from the movie.
Half an hour into the film, Phoebe noticed that Audrey was unusually quiet.
Glancing at Audrey, she found her slumped on the sofa like a deflated ball, staring at her phone with a listless expression.
Phoebe put down the bag of potato chips, wiped her hands with a tissue, and leaned over to Audrey with a smile, "What’s up? Missing your man?"
Audrey looked at Phoebe, nodded honestly, "I want to go see him."
