Chapter 519: Chapter 519: Isn’t Insulting Others Your Forte?

Shane took some cold medicine, but it didn’t seem to work. He coughed all night.

Worried that his coughing might keep Audrey Sutton from sleeping well, he got out of bed around five and went downstairs.

In her groggy state, Audrey vaguely sensed that he had gone downstairs, but she was too tired to open her eyes, snuggled in her warm bed.

After a little internal struggle and seeing that Shane hadn’t come back up for a while, she finally got out of bed, wrapped herself in a fluffy shawl, and went downstairs.

The living room lights were off, and she could only see flashes of color from the TV screen and hear Shane’s occasional cough from the couch in the shadowy room.

"Did I wake you?" His voice was already hoarse.

Audrey walked over to the wall and turned on the living room light, "Your cough is pretty bad. Maybe you should see a doctor later?"

Shane replied, "It’s just a cold. Some cold medicine will do."

Audrey gave him a sidelong glance, "If you’re not feeling well, just go see a doctor. Get the medicine you need or take an injection if it’s required. Don’t let it drag on; it’ll only get worse."

As she spoke, Audrey picked up a water cup, poured him a cup of hot water, and handed it to him, "Besides, if you don’t get better soon, what if you pass it to me?"

Shane paused for a second at her words, realizing that since she’s in a special condition, she can’t afford to catch a cold.

Pregnant women can’t take many medications, so if she caught the cold, it would be a big problem.

Audrey didn’t know what he was thinking. She walked over, handed him the cup, and asked, "Do you have anything going on this morning?"

Shane placed the cup on the coffee table, looked at her, and answered, "I can have something or nothing."

Audrey suggested, "Then don’t go to the office. Let’s visit my second brother in the hospital, and you can pick up some medicine while we’re there."

Shane didn’t argue, hoping to get well soon and not cause her any trouble.

When they left in the morning, Audrey handed him a sweater and scarf, and he put them on obediently.

"You look handsome like this. There’s no need to dress so thin. You’re not young anymore; stop pretending to be a young guy."

Shane didn’t show any displeasure initially, but at her remark of "not young anymore," his brow furrowed instinctively.

Then she added, "People have to accept getting old. I remember when I was in middle school, I wouldn’t wear a cotton coat even on snowy days. Now, just a slight drop in temperature makes me feel freezing."

Realizing she didn’t mean to target him specifically, Shane didn’t argue but huffed lightly, "You seem to tolerate the cold well too, wearing a dress on snowy days without even thermal tights."

Understanding what he was referring to, Audrey pursed her lips and gave him a glare, "How dare you mention that? It was because of that female classmate of yours."

Shane coughed lightly twice, then reached out to straighten the hood of her coat before asking, "What did she do to you?"

Previously, she thought she couldn’t speak her mind, but now it seemed nonchalant. Audrey mumbled, "She came to your office once, and we met. She said I didn’t dress right and wasn’t good enough for you."

Shane said, "That’s your reason for not wearing thermal tights? Besides, does she get to decide who you’re worthy of? Does she have the right to criticize you?"

His words made Audrey feel sweet inside, but she replied with a slightly aggrieved tone, "You hadn’t fully accepted me back then. I was afraid you might also think so, so I wanted to dress up a bit."

Shane teased, "You’re usually so bold in front of me. Why do you get timid outside? If she dares to say that again..."

Audrey interrupted, "I’ll just slap her across the face!"

Shane looked at her expressionlessly, "That’s rough."

Audrey chuckled, quickly asking him, "What were you going to say?"

Shane smirked, "Just yell at her. Isn’t insulting people your specialty?"

Shane finished speaking and walked out, lips curved upward.

Audrey grabbed her textbooks and followed him, annoyed, "You’re lying! I never insult anyone!"

...

The car slowly drove into the hospital parking lot, and Audrey got out, waiting for Shane to lock the car.

While standing at the curb, she saw a silver-gray sedan pull up to a parking spot diagonally across from them. Someone opened the car door...

"Vanessa?" Audrey beamed and walked toward Vanessa Sterling.

Vanessa turned and saw her, smiling, though her swollen cheeks made the smile look somewhat forced.

"What happened to your face?" After asking, Audrey saw Miles Sterling step out of the driver’s seat. Her expression changed as she pulled Vanessa aside and asked quietly, "Did your brother hit you?"

Vanessa shook her head, explaining, "I have a toothache."

Audrey immediately understood, breathed a sigh of relief, and walked alongside Vanessa toward the hospital building, discussing Phoebe King’s wisdom tooth extraction from last time.

Once at the hospital, as they were heading to different departments, Audrey returned to Shane’s side, accompanying him to the inpatient wing.

When they arrived, Hazel Yates, Stephen Sutton, and Evan Sutton were all in the room, apparently there to deliver breakfast.

Franklin Sutton seemed in good spirits, chatting and laughing with a steady voice, eager to be discharged.

Audrey, having classes starting at ten, didn’t linger, accompanying Shane to see the doctor briefly.

Shane wanted a quick recovery, proactively suggesting an IV and injections, knowing the morning would likely be spent there.

"I have classes soon, so I can’t stay with you," she said.

Shane glanced at his watch as Stephen Sutton approached, prompting Shane to tell Audrey, "Your big brother is here to pick you up. Head to school already."

Audrey looked at him reluctantly, "Message me if you get bored."

Shane gave her a stern look, "Focus on your classes."

Audrey stood up, casting longing glances as she walked toward Stephen Sutton, "I’ll come find you after class. We can have lunch together."

Shane nodded, "Go on."

After taking a few steps, Audrey turned back and suggested, "Should I call Brother Xavier to keep you company?"

Shane teased, "A little nurse’s company is better than his."

Audrey frowned, wanting to argue, but Stephen Sutton interrupted, "Shane’s teasing you. Don’t take it seriously. Get going, or you’ll be late."

As Audrey walked off with Stephen Sutton, Lan Irving’s face suddenly popped into her mind.

Imagining the doctor who looked like Lan Irving, she wondered if he’d try getting close to Shane while she was away.

Her mind wandered, crafting tens of thousands of words of romance fiction.

After Audrey left, without her chattering, Shane felt like something was missing.
