Chapter 314: Chapter 314: A Girl Died

Horses are naturally sensitive and easily startled.

While running, it suddenly faced an unexpected object, immediately braking sharply, turning its head, and the body tilted, causing Audrey Sutton, who was riding it, to lose her balance. Her grip on the iron ring on the saddle wasn’t strong enough, and she was instantly thrown off.

She almost rolled on the ground before stopping.

Shane Warner, not far behind Audrey, witnessed all this, but it all happened in an instant. Even though he realized there was danger, he couldn’t react fast enough to protect Audrey.

After Audrey fell, Shane immediately stopped and quickly got off his horse, taking three steps in one to help Audrey up.

"Ouch~" Audrey uttered in pain, feeling a bit dazed by the fall.

"Where did you hurt yourself?" Shane asked worriedly.

He initially wanted to pick her up, but Audrey reached out to stop him, frowning, "Don’t move me yet, let me catch my breath."

She held her right foot, trying to bend it.

Clarissa Morgan and Quentin Sterling also ran over. Clarissa was already picking up the coat she had dropped earlier and explained, "It’s all my fault. I didn’t secure my coat and it fell, causing Audrey to fall off the horse."

Audrey was in too much pain to care whether Clarissa had done it intentionally or not. Shane, worried about her injuries, didn’t pay attention to what Clarissa was saying.

The staff at the stable also noticed what happened and even brought over a stretcher.

But Audrey, after sitting on the ground for a moment, steadied herself with Shane’s help and stood up, trying to move her joints, "I’m okay, luckily I was wearing protective gear, didn’t get hurt too bad."

Shane noticed the faint bloodstains on her white gloves. He took her hand and gently removed the worn gloves, examining the scrapes on her palm and frowning, "Does anywhere else hurt?"

Audrey awkwardly rubbed her backside, "I’ll be fine after a rest, it really hurt earlier, but I’m feeling much better now."

The stable staff brought over a first aid kit to treat Audrey’s wounds. Shane suggested going back, but Audrey insisted she was fine and wanted to ride a bit longer.

Seeing that she was indeed lively after resting a bit, probably not injured seriously, Shane, though not willing to let her ride alone, carried her onto his horse, taking the reins himself.

After all, her crisis-handling skills couldn’t be learned in a short time, and even if she learned them, she might not react well in a moment of danger.

She herself was probably a bit frightened, so when Shane lifted her onto his horse, she promptly got on.

Audrey didn’t know how Clarissa’s coat fell earlier, and it was hard to say now. Since Clarissa had immediately confessed, pursuing it further would make her seem petty.

She should thank Clarissa for letting her experience what it’s like to ride in Shane’s arms.

With him behind her, she felt much safer and told him about her thoughts during the fall.

Shane picked up the pace, overtaking Clarissa and Quentin. Audrey found it thrilling, gripping the iron ring tightly, smiling and screaming into the wind.

Seeing her so happy, Shane couldn’t help but smile as well.

Clarissa watched their backs, her gaze gradually turning fierce...

On Monday, Audrey returned to school. As soon as she got out of Shane’s car, she saw Barry Barrett standing by the roadside, waving at her.

She pushed the car door open and got out, only then noticing Nolan Hawke standing beside Barry.

As Audrey’s eyes met Nolan’s, she quickly averted her gaze.

"I have a lunch meeting, you’ll need to have lunch at school by yourself, but I’ll take you out for dinner tonight," Shane told her from inside the car.

Audrey nodded, smiling as she waved, "Alright, I’m off to class then."

Shane asked, "Aren’t you forgetting something?"

"Huh?" Audrey looked at her textbook and her bag, there was nothing she had forgotten.

Shane, displeased, said, "Close the door for me."

Confused, Audrey closed the car door, and Shane immediately drove off.

Audrey watched his car leave in confusion, until she heard Barry calling her, pulling her out of her thoughts and prompting her to walk over.

This was the first time Audrey had seen Nolan since the night of his birthday party.

He seemed sober again, appearing just as before.

Unsure whether he remembered what he said that night, Audrey found facing him a bit awkward.

"Brother Hawke, I’m off to class, you go ahead and tend to your matters. I’ll come find you for lunch later."

Nolan nodded, smiling as he said to Barry, "Alright, call me after class, and I’ll come pick you up."

"Okay."

Before leaving, Nolan glanced at Audrey again, making her uneasy.

Linking arms with Barry as they walked toward the teaching building, Audrey asked, "Are you two living together? Why is he bringing you to school today?"

"No, we aren’t living together. I went to my aunt’s over the weekend, and he oddly came to pick me up this morning. It was a bit out of the way, but he only called when he reached my aunt’s place."

Hearing this, Audrey felt that Nolan was quite considerate towards Barry. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Also, there hadn’t been any news from Quinn’s side yet.

"By the way, Audrey, have you heard that something big happened at our school?" Barry whispered mysteriously into her ear, "A girl died over by the man-made lake, it’s quite mysterious."

"Really? When did it happen?"

"Just last night, I heard about it this morning. The lake is under renovation, so no one usually goes there. But they say the school security discovered her while on patrol. She was wearing a wedding dress when found. It’s stirring up tales in the school of things like a ghost wedding, choosing the right time to die by the water, to become a doomed couple in the netherworld."

Audrey felt goosebumps, "Was she a student from our school?"

Barry: "Flora told me she was from their department, a freshman. Your second brother is a cop, right? Could you get some inside information?"

"I haven’t heard anything, and my second brother is very disciplined. There’s no way he’d casually talk about a murder case with me. We’ll have to wait for the case to be solved."

Upon reaching the classroom, Audrey found many people discussing the incident. It hadn’t appeared in the news, clearly the school was trying to prevent panic by temporarily blocking the information, but the students’ gossip spread like wildfire, so it was hardly a secret anymore, with all sorts of wild speculations creating unease.
