Chapter 230: Chapter 230: Entangled Love and Hate

Back then, the sad events, now retelling them seems like a memorable story.

The man spoke continuously: "I was just thinking at the time, after finishing this drink, I would sincerely wish them well together, but I didn’t expect..."

The man’s eyes dimmed, his tone also dropped, his expression full of regret: "No one expected such a thing to happen at the graduation party, it was supposed to be a new beginning, everyone thought Sean would be outstanding..."

Audrey Sutton pursed her lips and turned to glance at Shane. She knew well that Sean’s matter was a soft spot in his heart, or perhaps a thorn that couldn’t be pulled out, causing pain when touched.

Yet he concealed his emotions well in front of others, calmly bringing the wine glass to his lips. Only the hint of loneliness in his eyes was noticed by her.

Audrey didn’t know how to comfort him, so she awkwardly shifted the topic saying, "Let’s order some more snacks, I see the kids really love eating."

Shane put down the glass and glanced at her: "The kids love to eat or you want to eat?"

The woman laughed and said: "Eating less sweet stuff is better, it’s easy to cause cavities."

Seeing Shane still has the mood to tease her, Audrey felt her worries ease a bit.

The man seemed to deliberately avoid mentioning Sean further in the conversation that followed.

Through the chat, Audrey learned that the man and Sean seemed to be childhood friends, played together with Shane when they were younger, but because of the same age, got closer to Sean, considered a rare close friend of Sean.

Audrey didn’t expect that her elder brother would be involved somehow, and it was only today she found out that her brother and Shane’s brother were classmates and had gone through a period of "love and rivalry."

However, the rivalry in love among boys seemingly isn’t as ruthless as it is among girls, as most choose to support their brothers.

Looking at the happy family of three sitting across from him, Audrey glanced at Shane who was smiling and listening attentively to the man speaking.

She wondered if he was thinking, if his brother were alive, perhaps he would already have such a happy family.

Maybe that’s why he hates Vincent Warner.

It’s just uncertain now whether his brother’s death was really related to Vincent.

Based on her understanding of Vincent, she felt Vincent wasn’t the type with a dark mind.

However, Shane often reminds her that people can hide their true selves, and didn’t she not realize that Vincent would be the kind of man maintaining a mistress outside?

So she still chooses to unconditionally trust Shane.

If Shane says Vincent is a bad person, then he is a bad person.

They had dinner together and then parted ways, the little boy got more lively after getting used to them, continuously calling Audrey as sister in a sweet manner, melting Audrey’s heart.

Audrey taught him to call Shane uncle, and the boy obediently called out uncle to Shane, seeing Shane’s stern face, Audrey laughed smugly.

She hadn’t interacted much with kids before, so when Shane told her about the "gestation period," she was more scared than anything.

But having spent the whole day with this little munchkin, Audrey actually felt a sudden urge to have a child.

But the impulse was only temporary because she knew her relationship with Shane wasn’t yet at that sweet level of the munchkin’s parents.

"Wait in the car, I’ll go buy a pack of cigarettes."

Audrey snapped out of her daze as Shane had already pushed the door open and stepped out.

She watched him walk around the car and stride into a nearby convenience store.

The driver was a kind Serephina man with a beard, who seemed quite good-natured.

The driver said something while looking out the window, probably commenting on the evening getting colder.

She could barely understand some simple daily phrases but struggled internally without managing to respond, so she just smiled without answering.

She rolled down the car window slightly, rested her head on it looking at the entrance of the convenience store.

A woman in a beige trench coat walked into the store, and because Eastern faces were rare abroad, Audrey couldn’t help but take a few extra glances.

From afar, she couldn’t see the woman’s face clearly, just felt she was a young and fashionable woman, with short hair slightly curled to jaw length, wearing fine high heels, appearing intelligent and mature.

As Audrey was staring at the woman, Shane happened to finish buying cigarettes and nearly bumped into the woman who was walking with her head down.

The woman seemed to apologize briefly, then one walked into the store and the other walked out.

Shane walked straight back to the car, reached out to open the door, and sat back beside Audrey.

Audrey withdrew her gaze, not paying much attention to the woman just now, she merely muttered to Shane: "You should smoke less."

Shane slightly nodded at the driver, indicating he could continue driving before replying to Audrey: "Quitting slowly."

Audrey pursed her lips and said nothing.

She didn’t know how strong his smoking addiction had been, but in the days they spent together, she hadn’t seen him smoke often, and even when he did, it wasn’t in her presence.

"Hey?" Suddenly Audrey extended her neck and looked at a spot on the left side of the road: "Isn’t that Chloe Swift?"

Shane followed her gaze for a glance, and it was indeed Chloe Swift, walking alone on the side of the road.

But she seemed to be walking fast, not like she was leisurely strolling, as if rushing somewhere.

The car soon passed by Chloe Swift, and Audrey turned her head as the car moved further, watching her for a few more moments before retracting her gaze, puzzled and muttering: "What’s she up to? Out alone so late is dangerous."

Shane: "Just take care of yourself."

Audrey glanced at him unsatisfied, pouted, and lowered her head to play with her phone.

...

Chloe Swift compared the address on her phone and stood in front of a simple white-style cottage.

After confirming the house number was correct, she stepped forward to ring the doorbell.

Once...

Twice...

No response.

Seeing a French window nearby, she was about to check inside when she heard the rhythmic sound of high heels from behind.

She turned back to see a woman in a beige trench coat, carrying a shopping bag, inside were milk and bread just bought from the convenience store.

"...Hello." The woman in beige trench coat sized up Chloe Swift, politely asking in a probing tone in Chinese, "...Who are you looking for?"

Chloe Swift looked up and down at the woman, her mature outfit offsetting her sweet features, looking young but giving a very charismatic sense of calm.

Turns out this is the appearance that Vincent Warner yearned for night and day.
