Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 221: Someone I Like
Audrey Sutton frowned slightly as she observed, but she couldn’t figure out what Stephen Sutton was thinking, so she only said: "It’s hard to tell if he likes her, but this is the first time both sets of parents are meeting. All the previous matchmakings ended without a result; they never sat down together like this."
Laura Yates said, "I think that girl is into your big brother, but your brother might not feel the same way. It seems like he’s only sitting there out of politeness. Look, the girl keeps looking at your brother, but he hasn’t even glanced at her. If your brother liked her, they’d definitely be making eye contact."
Audrey Sutton and Phoebe King both looked as if they suddenly realized something. Phoebe, touching her chin thoughtfully, nodded in agreement: "...makes sense."
Audrey Sutton: "Then my big brother must be hoping someone would save him now."
At this, Phoebe King immediately got the urge for a "heroine saving the hero" moment. Just as she was hesitating whether to step in, she saw Helen Holloway beckoning to her: "Phoebe, come over here!"
Phoebe King felt as if God was helping her. She immediately put down her unfinished skewer, carefully wiped her lips, worried about smudging her lipstick.
After getting confirmation from Audrey Sutton that her makeup was fine, Phoebe King trotted over happily.
"Aunt Helen, what’s up?" Phoebe asked, looking innocent as she approached. As she spoke, she noticed Stephen Sutton and Rosalind Sherman’s expressions were off, evidently not expecting Phoebe to be there.
Helen Holloway took Phoebe King by the hand and had her sit next to her. As she settled, she saw Franklin Sutton approach and ask Hazel Yates casually, "Mom, what’s going on?"
Hazel Yates pointed to the empty seat next to Samuel Sutton, saying, "Sit down and have a chat."
Hearing his mom’s roundabout way of speaking, Franklin Sutton felt a bad premonition. He glanced at Phoebe, who had arrived before him. In the presence of so many elders, he maintained proper etiquette and seated himself at the table.
Phoebe King also realized something and gave Franklin Sutton a once-over.
He was charming and handsome indeed, but her heart was already occupied by Stephen Sutton first.
What a mess is this? Not being able to be with the man she loves and instead becoming his sister-in-law?
Damn...why does the thought feel kind of exciting?
Observing from a distance, Audrey Sutton and Laura Yates found the situation intriguing and discreetly shuffled over, grabbing two little stools and stealthily sitting next to Hazel Yates to watch the spectacle.
Helen Holloway introduced Phoebe King with a smile, saying, "Mother-in-law, this is the distant cousin of Shane I mentioned before."
Today, Phoebe King was dressed modestly like a well-behaved girl. Since she was friends with Audrey Sutton, Hazel Yates was quite satisfied with Phoebe King: "She looks around our Audrey’s age."
Helen Holloway and Hazel Yates were in sync: "Phoebe is already twenty-four, and her parents have started urging her to date these past two years."
Hazel Yates smoothly shifted the topic to Franklin Sutton: "Isn’t it the same for our Franklin? He’s twenty-seven and hasn’t brought a girlfriend home yet either."
Helen Holloway feigned surprise: "Twenty-seven? Then isn’t he quite suitable for our Phoebe?"
Hazel Yates: "The age is appropriate; it just depends on whether they both have the inclination...why not exchange WhatsApp contacts?"
Phoebe: "..."
Franklin Sutton: "..."
Franklin Sutton glanced at Phoebe King and felt it would be difficult for her to step down gracefully if he refused outright in front of all these people.
As he was contemplating a way to gracefully delay, he heard Phoebe King putting on a standard smile for dealing with elders: "Aunt Helen, Auntie, thank you for considering me, but...I already have someone I like."
As she spoke, Phoebe King subtly glanced at Stephen Sutton, who lowered his eyes and dared not look in her direction.
When he saw Phoebe appear, he feared this madwoman might do something inexplicable.
But she behaved modestly in front of the elders.
However, her feigned innocence and meek demeanor at this moment couldn’t fool Stephen Sutton.
"You have someone you like? Why didn’t you tell Aunt Helen? You really know how to keep secrets, huh?"
Phoebe King expressed a bit of shyness with a "hehe" and said, "...I haven’t succeeded yet."
Hazel Yates: "A sprightly girl like you can’t attract a boy? Boys must be lining up to pursue you."
Phoebe King gave Hazel Yates a sweet smile and humorously teased, "Maybe he’s blind, to not find such a good girl like me even with a lantern."
Helen Holloway playfully chided Phoebe King, "Who praises themselves like this?"
Phoebe King kept a cheerful demeanor, feeling akin to Shane Warner.
Someone who forever remains a good child in front of the elders, especially lovable.
Audrey Sutton just sat on the side, watching Stephen Sutton with a profound, knowing smile.
Stephen Sutton remained expressionless, making it impossible for her to discern his feelings about the family trying to match Phoebe King with Franklin.
But when Phoebe King later said, "I already have someone I like," although others may not grasp it, Stephen Sutton clearly knew the "someone" was him.
Audrey Sutton also had little romantic experience; she couldn’t even figure out the emotions of the one in her life yet, so her big brother was even more of a mystery.
Yet Stephen Sutton’s indifference made Audrey Sutton feel Phoebe King faced an uphill battle.
Compared to Shane Warner, if it were him, he would definitely react a bit, even if only to tease a little when she hinted like that.
Seeing that Stephen Sutton had not a trace of a smile, he seemed truly uninterested in Phoebe King.
The mothers’ idea of matching Franklin Sutton and Phoebe King was shelved; Franklin returned to the other table to drink and chat with the brothers.
Phoebe King moved her small stool next to Audrey Sutton and Laura Yates, with a couple of spaces separating her from Rosalind Sherman and Stephen Sutton.
The elders continued their conversation, while the three of them whispered amongst themselves.
Phoebe King was generally not patient enough to quietly sit and listen to these adults talk; she stayed here mainly to observe the situation.
With the way things appeared, she felt her odds weren’t good.
But she kept thinking that she pursued Stephen Sutton first; Rosalind Sherman only appeared by his side later without any emotional foundation, shouldn’t she be given a chance, a probationary period, to see if she was dissatisfied before dismissing her?
Instead, she was outright dismissed, and Rosalind Sherman was chosen.
She was indignant.
In both appearance and family background, she felt she was better than Rosalind Sherman. Losing to her left Phoebe unconvinced. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Before their engagement settled, she had to come up with a plan to weed out this small budding issue from its roots.
