Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 212: I’ve Liked You for a Very, Very Long Time
Shane looked at her coldly, his body blocking the doorway, not intending to let Audrey Sutton in.
When he saw her miraculously appear in front of him, the anger in his heart actually dissipated. Especially seeing her cheerful face, even if he was angry, he couldn’t express it.
But he was a bit curious about what tactics she would use to win his forgiveness, so he steeled himself, planning to close the door while Audrey Sutton was not paying attention. However, she quickly reacted, wedging a leg into the door gap to prevent him from closing it. She frowned slightly and said to him, "Don’t be like this, I’ve come such a long way to find you, with full sincerity to apologize. Give me a chance to explain clearly to you."
"Don’t want to hear it."
Audrey Sutton thickened her skin and squeezed herself through the door gap because she felt Shane’s temper could be so cruel that he might really lock her out, and even calling Mor wouldn’t help then.
Shane was also worried the door might pinch her, so he didn’t use much force. Seeing she already squeezed in, he simply let go, deliberately keeping a stern face, standing still by the door, watching her.
Audrey Sutton only held his gaze for less than a second before looking down. His eyes, when filled with anger, truly made one’s heart skip a beat, inducing a fearful feeling.
Bending down, she placed the bag in her hand by the door, noticing there weren’t any extra slippers for her to change into. Her freed hands felt a bit aimless, and she fiddled with the fluffy pom-poms on her scarf to cover her embarrassment: "...Are you still angry?"
Shane didn’t answer but asked back, "What are you here for?"
Looking at his stern demeanor and cold voice, Audrey Sutton felt a slight bit of grievance in her heart.
She had mustered great courage to decide to find him, single-handedly embarking on an exhausting journey all day without rest, yet he still was unwilling to show her a kind face.
"If I didn’t come, how long were you planning to avoid me?"
Shane just looked down at her, without answering.
Audrey Sutton retracted the forced smile on her face and seriously looked at him: "I think your heart must be made of stone. I’ve tried everything to reach you, but you’re ignoring me. What exactly do you want me to do?"
Shane sneered, "Why should I care what you do? Anyway, from now on, see whoever you want, do whatever you like, I don’t care anymore."
Audrey Sutton’s eyebrows drooped, her tone soft and carrying a hint of helplessness: "I didn’t come to fight with you. I’ve explained it all in WhatsApp; Simon Sue and I are really just very ordinary friends. I was afraid you’d misunderstand, that’s why I didn’t dare to tell you back then."
After she finished, she looked at Shane, who remained silent.
"You don’t believe me anymore, do you?"
Shane turned and walked into the room, speaking over his shoulder, "You don’t need me to believe you. I said I’m no longer going to mind your business. Go boldly and do what you want to do, don’t mind me."
Watching his cold turn, leaving just an emotionless back, all the grievance accumulated over the days seemed to surge in her heart, her nose turned sour, and her eyes began to mist, her voice took on a tearful tone: "Can you stop being like this..."
Hearing this, Shane felt a twinge in his heart, his steps halted, yet he didn’t turn back to look at her.
He heard her continue: "I know I was wrong; I won’t lie to you anymore, okay? Can you stop being angry?"
She admitted her fault, but her tone was extremely aggrieved, as if she might cry in front of him at any moment.
After a few seconds of silence, he heard her footsteps approaching him.
Shane glanced sideways, catching a glimpse of her from the corner of his eye. Before he could see clearly, he felt a force around his waist.
With the heater on indoors, Shane only wore a thin shirt. Her face pressed against his back; soon, he felt warm liquid soaking into his clothes.
"I miss you," she spoke with more obvious crying undertones than before, "I miss you very, very much."
The words spoken in such emotion didn’t sound like her playful teasing.
She genuinely and sincerely said she missed him, and Shane felt particularly surprised.
And Audrey Sutton’s next words made Shane feel like he was dreaming.
"My family didn’t actually force me to get married. The reason I stepped up during the wedding wasn’t that I was being playful; it’s because I like you." She sobbed, gripping the front of his shirt tightly with her small hands, the strength evidently tightened as if to give herself courage, "...I’ve liked you for a long, long time."
Finally hearing her say those words.
Shane’s stiff expression couldn’t be maintained, his lips subtly curving into a smile.
"So... can you stop doubting me? I lied because I was afraid you’d be angry. I haven’t done anything to betray you."
"Really."
Without getting a response from him, Audrey Sutton was unsure whether such an abrupt confession would cause him to reject her. Anyway, she took the risk.
Afraid he would refuse, she almost used all her strength to tightly hug him, as if trying to convey through this gesture that she truly, truly liked him.
Until she felt a pair of warm hands covering her own, only then did Audrey Sutton lift her head in surprise. He gently patted the hand she used to clutch his shirt and finally spoke, "Don’t rub your snivel on my clothes."
Only then did Audrey Sutton release her hands, watching Shane turn around. She sniffled, looking through tear-filled eyes at him before lowering her head to wipe the tears off her face with the back of her hand.
"You like me?"
Hearing Shane’s voice, unsure if he was teasing her, Audrey Sutton glanced at him but didn’t perceive any mocking intent. It seemed like he was seriously questioning this.
So Audrey Sutton, with reddened eyes, immediately nodded.
Shane looked down at her and said, "So you’ve been secretly in love with me for a long time and devised ways to marry me?"
Audrey Sutton just gazed tearily at him, not responding, feeling his words seemed partially right yet partially wrong.
Shane reached out and lifted her chin, making her meet his gaze. His thumb moved sideways, wiping away the tears on her cheek, he said to her, "Since you’ve said this much, this time I’ll forgive you."
Audrey Sutton’s eyes suddenly brightened, hearing Shane continue, "I’ll give you a chance to pursue me. Perform well, and I’ll agree to date you. Let’s pretend the marriage hasn’t happened and start from dating."
Audrey Sutton used her hand to wipe her eyes, looking earnestly at him and asked, "How to pursue you?"
Shane released the hand resting on her face, assuming an aristocratic air as he sized her up, "Asking me? Of course, you have to figure it out yourself, I’ve given you the opportunity. Whether or not you can win my heart depends on your own capacity."
