Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 283: Accompany Him for Me
As for the words beneath the verdict, they were so small and dense that Seraphina Redgrave could barely make them out.
She tried hard to see clearly, but it was futile; she could only vaguely discern some key information.
"When is the execution going to be carried out?"
"Tomorrow at noon, and given the extremely negative social impact of this case, the higher-ups want to make it a public execution."
One of the staff members spoke in a somewhat heavy tone.
Over the past three days, they had witnessed this frail girl exhibit extraordinary resilience, and they all felt a tinge of regret about her impending death. They knew in their hearts that this girl shouldn’t actually die and that she had been set up by the Redgrave Family to be sent to Veridian Isle. It was merely because she had harmed the interests of the tycoons that she was forced to die.
"..."
Tomorrow at noon.
To be executed in public view.
There wasn’t even the dignity to die with some semblance of respect.
Seraphina chuckled to herself bitterly, "I won’t sign this document. I have no crimes to confess to. I’m going to die anyway, so it doesn’t matter whether I sign or not."
"..."
The three staff members beside her didn’t make things difficult for her and simply put away the verdict. They asked, "Do you have any unfulfilled wishes? If it’s within our capability, we can help you."
"How are the members of The Defiance Society doing now?" Seraphina asked bluntly.
Upon hearing "The Defiance Society," the staff members looked disdainful. "You’re still worried about those people? They’ve been locked up for just a few dozen hours, and we haven’t even used any methods yet. As soon as they were interrogated, they confessed to everything when prompted. They even pinned some bizarre charges on you."
Such actions were more excessive than those of The Directorate.
"..."
Seraphina merely lowered her gaze without speaking and showed no extra expression.
"What a bunch of trash. I still recall your The Defiance Society; it was your creation. You provided them with resources and funds, supported their research, helped them compete, and even break into showbiz. And now, there’s no trace of loyalty. What ungrateful wolves! Moreover, if it weren’t for their words, your verdict wouldn’t have come down so fast," the person next to her spoke up for Seraphina’s injustice.
In fact, the quicker issuance of the verdict might have been better for Seraphina.
Since she was going to die anyway, at least there would be less torment.
The few individuals saw that Seraphina had no reaction, her complexion still pale, and they awkwardly shut their mouths, only asking, "Do you want to eat something? The food here is not bad."
"No need, please just give me that jar of candies Nathan Ayers brought." Seraphina only had that on her mind.
"Why do you just eat candies and not eat any proper food? You’ll end up malnourished..."
He suddenly stopped talking and slapped his mouth.
Seraphina was nearly out of time; why would she care about malnutrition?
They eventually handed the jar of candies to Seraphina. Miles Harrington had already stopped torturing her.
This meant that from now until tomorrow noon, she could pass the time in relative peace.
The chains were removed by the staff, and she struggled to walk to the wall, sliding down to sit on the floor.
The ground was icy, but the previous torment had been too agonizing, so her perception of these things had dulled.
Seraphina just sat there, quietly gazing at the jar of candies. After a long while, she painstakingly opened it.
She fished out a chocolate candy, and her pale fingers took several tries to successfully unwrap it.
Finally, she lifted the candy to her eyes, gathered her strength, and managed to tear off the wrapper before placing the candy in her mouth.
She bit down heavily.
She expected the candy to shatter in her mouth, but it remained intact, while her teeth felt gritty and uncomfortable.
If Ethan Sterling were by her side, seeing her like this, he would surely mock her mercilessly, saying she couldn’t even eat candy properly.
Seraphina could even imagine the tone in which he’d say it, as if he were really by her side.
With such thoughts, Seraphina chuckled softly, her laughter causing her throat to itch, leading her to cough, as a vivid crimson rose at the corners of her eyes.
The little fawn nestled in her embrace, looking up at its owner, its large eyes filled with confusion, not understanding why its owner seemed so happy.
Seraphina felt the fawn’s gaze and lowered her head to rub its head, "Little fawn, I never thought it would be you accompanying me in my final moments."
"..."
The little fawn didn’t understand and simply knew that its owner was very fond of it, nudging its head against Seraphina.
"Little fawn, I’m leaving soon, and I’ll never return."
Seraphina thought for a moment and added, "No, what if the place I’m going after I die is still like here? That would be worse than not going there at all. So, it’d be better just to fade into nothingness."
The little fawn sensed its owner’s melancholy, its small head nudging her palm. Seraphina’s lips curled as she watched its movement, "Little fawn, tomorrow, when I’m being executed, you better not accompany me. I’ve heard that firing squads can be very bloody, and it would scare you. In the days to come, you should return to Hibiscus Garden and live with Nanny Lynch. She is a very, very good person, and she’ll surely take great care of you."
"..."
The little fawn still didn’t understand what Seraphina was saying, so it laid its head down, quietly curling up in Seraphina’s lap.
Looking into the fawn’s eyes, Seraphina suddenly thought of Ethan. In an instant, her nose stung with a sense of discomfort.
She was remembering, recalling where she had last seen Ethan.
After pondering for a long time, she finally remembered it was on his private jet.
It had been only a few days ago, yet it felt like a lifetime.
That day, it had taken hours just to see him off at the airport, and in the end, Ethan was the one who sent her down.
At the time, she thought Ethan was being unnecessarily fussy, but looking back now, it was their last time together, and it seemed, quite short.
The memories of every moment spent with Ethan replayed like a carousel in Seraphina’s mind.
She unwrapped another candy, and the rich scent of chocolate filled her mouth, making her want to cry.
Seraphina picked up the fawn in her arms, the pain from this mere movement almost too much to bear.
She looked with difficulty into the fawn’s wet eyes and tried to show as gentle a smile as possible. "Little fawn, after I’m gone, you can stay with Ethan for me."
"..."
The fawn tilted its head, as if asking what she meant.
"Sigh, I once told Hector Shaw how much I cared for Ethan, but looking back, I don’t think I really ever did care as much."
Seraphina’s smile was somewhat bitter, "I used to think his affection for me wasn’t genuine, just a possessive desire. But that day when we talked on the phone, and I heard what he said, it felt like a part of me suddenly went empty. So, little fawn, in the future, accompany him more on my behalf, okay?"
