Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 245: My Brother Is Dead
Ethan Sterling pressed his lips together and suddenly thought of something, dialing another number.
"Young Master Sterling, what can I do for you?"
It was the voice of a cartoon character, the all-AI sports car Ethan had gifted Seraphina Redgrave.
"Where are you now?"
"In reply to Young Master Sterling, I am currently in the parking lot at Blackwood Road No. 79 on the outskirts."
Where’s Seraphina?
What kind of godforsaken place is that? Ethan’s gaze turned icy cold as he stepped hard on the accelerator, heading towards the address the robot provided.
...
The outskirts were the remotest suburb of Sovereign. Even driving quickly, Ethan took quite some time to get there.
The rain was pouring even harder, the sound of it hitting the ground was loud, it felt as discomforting as if it were pounding on one’s heart. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
The dim streetlights on both sides were enveloped by the rain, leaving only a faint trace of yellow.
Ethan spotted the position of the sports car, but the lights inside were off, and Seraphina wasn’t in the car.
He slowed the car down and moved forward gently. The further he went, the narrower the road became, to the point a car could no longer pass.
As if seeing something, he slammed on the brakes abruptly.
The car’s headlights shone brightly, illuminating a frail figure squatting by the roadside, drenched and battered by the rain. This person buried their head between their knees, curled up into a ball, and upon closer inspection, seemed to be shivering, pitiful to the extreme.
What was Seraphina doing?
Was she out of her mind?
Without thinking, Ethan pulled out an umbrella and dashed out of the car.
The raindrops were so heavy, the expensive umbrella could scarcely withstand the pounding from the drops.
Upon seeing her, Ethan’s expression softened a bit as he strode over to Seraphina, squatting in front of her.
Just as he was about to speak, he saw Seraphina’s ghastly pale face, devoid of blood, her once full, rosy lips now without color, even tinged with blue. Her hair clung messily to her face, in a miserable state.
And those eyes, hollow, staring blankly ahead, utterly lifeless.
The last time he saw Seraphina like this was when Granny Coleman died.
Ethan tilted the umbrella, shielding the small figure in front of him.
He touched her cheek, cold beyond reason.
"How long have you been here?" Ethan’s angry tone held a hint of worry.
In her current state, even with an umbrella, it wouldn’t help. Being drenched for so long, she was likely to fall ill.
Ethan threw the umbrella aside, standing up intending to carry Seraphina.
The rain instantly soaked through his clothes.
"My brother is dead, he taught me a lot of things on Veridian Isle." Seraphina suddenly spoke, staring mechanically at Ethan, her eyes still void of any emotion.
She couldn’t even lift her hands now, as if this storm had drained all her strength.
Ethan paused upon hearing her, "So how did you end up here?"
Nathan Ayers had already reported the general situation to him on the way over.
But he didn’t have a clear understanding, such as the dead man being Seraphina’s brother.
Seraphina sat there in a daze, too cold to move, making even an expression was difficult.
It seemed as if she didn’t hear what Ethan said, continuing to speak to herself, "When I first went to Veridian Isle, the elders bullied me, I couldn’t even find a place to sleep. Some malicious people even harassed me, but Brother Zack was always protecting me, teaching me how to survive in that place."
The raindrops on a person hurt so much, how much more would it hurt if they were bullets?
Ethan’s face showed displeasure, "Why is it first Hector Shaw, then Ronan Yates, and now a brother? Where do I fit in all this?"
"He taught me how to distinguish which fruits were edible and which were poisonous, he taught me how to make simple traps, he taught me how to get along with people on Veridian Isle."
Seraphina continued speaking to herself.
She didn’t know whether she was crying or not, even if she was, the tears would mix with the rain and slide down, leaving no trace.
In the rain, Seraphina’s voice grew much softer.
She stared blankly, like a doll drenched and battered by the rain.
Ethan had to listen carefully to catch the important information within her words.
"He loved to smile, he liked sharing all happy things with me, he hoped I could have a better life. I asked him, in a place like Veridian Isle, what’s there to be happy about?"
"He told me happiness is simple, it could be the fish just caught, the salty sea breeze just coming in, or a small flower growing among thorns, all these made him happy."
Images of her time with Zachary Zane flashed through Seraphina’s mind, making her realize how much Zack’s influence had been on her.
He made her come to terms with it, taught her to accept life on Veridian Isle, allowing her to settle down, carefully planning for the future.
Standing by and listening, Ethan’s face was full of disdain, these words were like a sharp knife engraving bloody marks on his insides.
"Are you going to continue? Telling me stories about you and other men, do you even know how long I’ve been looking for you today?"
That man wasn’t him, so he didn’t want to listen.
"He was really good, always thinking of me first, even this time..."
It seemed Seraphina didn’t hear his protest, she continued speaking: "He knew I was going to save him, so not to drag me down, he lied to cooperate with me. He ended up grabbing a police officer’s gun and was shot dead on the spot."
"..."
Pretty brave, Ethan thought silently.
"I thought with this reunion I could save him from his predicament, but it led to his quicker death."
Seraphina’s voice carried no inflection, yet it felt like it was gnawing at one’s heart.
"Since he was already on death row, whether attacking or not, he was destined to die." Seraphina couldn’t possibly not understand this truth, it wasn’t her fault, why should she be sad?
"Yes." Seraphina’s voice drifted lightly, "Either way, he was destined to die because he was a person from Veridian Isle."
"What’s wrong with people from Veridian Isle? Why were they born inferior? So inferior they must die, and even after death, be used for human experimentation."
This is A Country, survival of the fittest.
Ethan lowered his eyes, not saying these words aloud.
"So, in this life, what did Brother Zack have while alive? He was so kind, yet everyone stayed away, like he was a virus."
For the first time, Seraphina’s eyes showed bewilderment, "What about me? What do I live for?"
"..."
"Do I really have the ability to change everyone’s view of people from Veridian Isle? Can they truly live openly and freely on this land?"
It seemed like Seraphina was asking Ethan, but also questioning herself.
Ever since Zachary Zane’s death, this question had lingered in her mind, but she dared not face it, she was scared.
Due to Zack’s death, her once unshakeable confidence was somewhat uncertain; she had done so much, prepared for so long, yet she still couldn’t save even Zach’s life.
Why couldn’t she have been faster?
If she had been quicker, Zachary wouldn’t have died.
