Mr. Hawthorne, Your Wife Wants a Divorce Again-Chapter 1037: Really Angry?
Ann Vaughn’s heart had just leapt into her throat, and before she could think of a countermeasure, those footsteps had already appeared at the doorway, standing against the light.
Cyrus Hawthorne walked straight up to Ann Vaughn, resting a large hand on her shoulder, his intense gaze sweeping over her inch by inch. Only after confirming she was unharmed did the turbulent storm in his dark eyes gradually calm down.
"Did you forget what you promised me?" Cyrus’s expression was indifferent, yet his voice was as cold as an unexpected Antarctic wind, its chill piercing to the bone, impossible to ignore.
Remembering her previous promise, Ann Vaughn immediately wilted, lacking her earlier bravado of hitting someone on the head with a frying pan. She lowered her head and softly defended herself:
"Jude Halloway wanted to kill this child; I couldn’t stand by and watch, so I just..."
"So you forgot my instructions and put yourself in danger?" Cyrus’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. "If the person who came just now wasn’t me but another accomplice, how confident are you that you could have escaped unharmed?"
"But I’m okay now, aren’t I?" It was the first time Ann had been so sternly rebuked by Cyrus, biting her lip, unable to lift her head.
She admitted that there was an element of impulsiveness in her actions, and a large part of her success was due to sheer luck.
The other accomplice wasn’t around, and Jude Halloway, having drunk alcohol, reacted too slowly to stop her.
In this situation, the safest strategy would have been to signal for the Hidden Guard to intervene and help.
But as someone who hadn’t had this habit before, Ann completely forgot about this option in the moment...
Upon hearing this, Cyrus’s gaze grew even colder.
Ann Vaughn waited with her head hanging down and, not hearing his further reprimand, was secretly relieved to have escaped unscathed.
Who would’ve thought that upon looking up, Cyrus Hawthorne’s figure was nowhere to be seen??
—He just left her like that??
"Miss Vaughn, Chief Lynch and the others are arriving soon. Please hand the child over to me and quickly go after Mr. Hawthorne."
Seeing Ann still rooted to the spot, Sept kindly reminded her, "Mr. Hawthorne left an important business meeting, ran several red lights, and sped here because he was so worried about your safety."
It’s worth mentioning, Sept had never seen Mr. Hawthorne so uncomposed before.
Ann was momentarily stunned, and recalling Cyrus’s earlier gaze upon her, she realized things were more serious than she thought.
"Thank you, these bottles of medicine are for the child. They have instructions on them; please give them to Chief Lynch later." After instructing Sept, Ann handed over the child and swiftly ran out.
"Don’t worry." Sept replied from behind her.
Upon exiting the house, Ann glanced around and spotted the distinctive Maybach parked not far away, yet to be driven off.
Seeing this, Ann felt slightly reassured and trotted over, slipping into the backseat.
Cyrus Hawthorne sat on the other side, his long legs crossed, holding a sleek black phone in his hand, conversing with someone in a foreign language.
Although she couldn’t understand what he was saying, just listening to his voice was an auditory delight.
Unfortunately, even as Ann deliberately made quite a noise getting into the car, he didn’t spare her a glance, as if she wasn’t there.
...Really angry?
Realizing this, Ann’s heart was filled with waves of QAQ emojis.
It was a full half-hour before Cyrus finished the call, casually placing the phone aside, about to continue handling the remaining documents, when a familiar fragrance brushed against his hand.
Then, a soft little paw swiftly reached up, tentatively grasping his free hand, and seeing no reaction from him, she took the opportunity to intertwine their fingers.
Cyrus’s face remained impassive, his gaze still indifferent, not stirring the slightest ripple.
Yet Ann was undeterred, using her other hand to wrap around his waist, and nudged her little head under his arm, successfully snuggling into his cool and fragrant embrace.
"Cyrus Hawthorne, I’m sorry for making you worry. It was my fault this time. I shouldn’t have recklessly barged in to save someone just because I felt confident, disregarding my own safety. I promise it’ll never happen again."
"Please, for the sake of it being my first offense, be magnanimous and forgive me this once? I promise I’ll reform myself from now on!"
Wait, something sounds a bit off with that...
But Ann didn’t care about much else now, shaking Cyrus’s arm with all her spoiled charm.
"Are you really not going to pay attention to me?"
"Are you sure you don’t want to pay attention to me anymore?"
"Cyrus Hawthorne, I’m telling you, don’t take the affection for granted!"
The Maybach smoothly hit the road, the only thing not quite so serene being Ann’s relentless chattering.
The man she clung to with one hand and embraced, from beginning to end, only had eyes for that cold stack of documents.
Ignoring her pitiful looks, he managed to thoroughly review a contract and then sign it, not in the least disturbed.
Despite her whining and play-acting, he remained steady and unmoved.
Ann nearly pouted into a ball, thinking to herself, she didn’t do anything heinous, right? How could he be so heartless?
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got, and she slapped her hand down on the document Cyrus was reading, saying coldly: "Let me tell you, I also have patience. If you miss this village..."
Cyrus slightly lifted his narrow eyes, casting her a light glance.
Instantly, Ann gave a soft, obedient smile, "Then I’ll just wait for you at the next village..."
"..."
Unfortunately, the great President Hawthorne had no intention of waiting for her at the next village. :)
The Maybach stopped at the private club Maplewood.
After getting out of the car, Cyrus didn’t intend to wait for Ann, striding away.
By the time Ann picked up her phone and looked back at the entrance of Maplewood, Cyrus was nowhere to be seen.
If she’d known, she would’ve asked about the specific box location just now...
Ann furrowed her brows in frustration, well, with Cyrus in a fit of anger right now, if she left, the consequences might be even more serious...
Thinking this, Ann headed toward the lobby, intending to wait there for a bit.
Several fashionably-dressed men with dyed hair approached head-on. Ann walked past them with her phone, and a man on the right suddenly brightened.
"Hey, beautiful, why are you alone in a place like this?" The man reached out to grab Ann’s arm, stopping in his tracks.
Ann sidestepped his hand, originally planning to ignore him and simply walk away, but unexpectedly, the group surrounded her, blocking her path.
"What do you want?" Ann was already annoyed, her beautiful slanted eyes exuding layers of coldness, somewhat intimidating unnecessarily.
The group immediately whistled, grinning maliciously, "Oh, a cold beauty, huh? Rare indeed, it’ll be even more fun this way."
"Hey, beautiful, want to come clubbing with us? The brothers here promise you a night you’ll never forget."
"Clubbing? Sure." Ann’s red lips curved into a bright, impudent smile, nearly dazzling the group, "I don’t mind dancing on your graves."
