Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride-Chapter 721 - 717, clearly lying
Felix Shaw stood in front of the window, smoking while gazing into the night outside. It was already 3 a.m., and his father had not yet come home.
He took another drag, exhaling the smoke and extinguished the cigarette. He drew the curtains, folded back towards the bed, and lay down directly in his casual housewear.
Early in the morning, Felix Shaw walked down the stairs to see his mother and the housemaid busily working at the dining table. He greeted them with a "good morning," his voice notably hoarse, perhaps from smoking too much the night before.
"You’re up?" Melody Zachary glanced over, already having set two sets of bowls and chopsticks. Women from Southriver inherently carried a gentle demeanor; even her scolding was soft and melodious. "Felix, did you smoke again last night? My dear, I’ve told you so many times to cut back. It’s not good for your health, yet you never listen. One day, when I see Tingting, I’ll have to tell her so she can keep an eye on you. No more smoking from now on."
"Mom, do you also manage dad like this?" Felix Shaw chuckled as he pulled out a dining chair to sit.
"Your dad, well, he’s very self-disciplined. He doesn’t need my oversight, unlike you, always worrying me." When it came to her husband, Melody Zachary was quite content; ever since marrying, she had been a housewife, not needing to work hard.
Felix Shaw smiled, noticing the two sets of dishes on the table, he deliberately asked, "Mom, dad didn’t come home last night?"
"No, he was entertaining an old friend, got carried away drinking,"
As Melody Zachary set down the chopsticks, she also sat down at the dining chair, then turned towards the kitchen, "Mrs. Xu, we can start the meal now."
Mrs. Xu responded, bringing out freshly steamed mini steamed buns. Melody served her son some millet porridge, and Felix Shaw placed some mini steamed buns on his mother’s plate, casually inquiring, "How did you know? Did dad call you last night?" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"No, how could he call when he drank too much? It was his secretary who called to inform me." Melody served herself some millet porridge, and Felix, also helping himself to some mini steamed buns, quietly asked, "What time did the secretary call?"
"Oh, I think it was around ten or eleven o’clock, I forgot." Melody frowned slightly in thought, her trust in her husband meant she wasn’t concerned about these details.
Felix Shaw smiled and said no more, quietly eating his breakfast. However, his mind was already making calculations.
His mother had said the secretary called around ten or eleven o’clock, but when he had called the secretary it was close to midnight. If his dad had been drunk by ten o’clock, how was he still drinking in the early morning?
It was clearly a lie; besides, when he called, he could distinctly tell that the secretary’s voice was groggy, probably roused from sleep by his call.
"Mom, how did you and dad get along when you were young?" Felix Shaw sipped his porridge, casually bringing up the subject. Melody looked up and laughed, "Oh dear, what made you think of asking that!"
Even so, Melody continued talking while eating breakfast, "Your dad, don’t be fooled by his stern appearance in front of you, that’s all an act. When he was young, he was particularly clingy. He wouldn’t let me go back to my parents’ house alone; he’d complain about being left alone at home, insisting on waiting until his days off to go together! It’s only in the last few years that it improved—I visit my family back home and he doesn’t follow anymore. You have no idea how much our relatives teased him, saying your dad can’t be without his wife, following wherever she goes..."
Watching his mother’s face reflect sweet nostalgia, Felix Shaw just smiled and remained silent.
...
During the morning meeting, Oliver Shaw sat in the CEO’s chair, still wearing the same suit from yesterday’s work.
