"Is Mel not in class today? Oh, she’s brought a friend back with her."
"Can we play with you today, Sister Mel?"
"Auntie made some delicious food, does Mel want to come and have some?"
Along the way, the pair encountered various people who greeted them; everyone was particularly familiar with Mel and also extended their kindness to Hexia, which left the young girl feeling surprisingly honored.
"Mel is really popular, isn’t she?" the young girl couldn’t help but remark.
"Mhm, everyone here is very nice," Mel nodded in agreement.
"Does everyone here belong to Mel’s kin?" Indeed, most of the residents here had hair colors similar to Mel’s, whether light purple or dark purple nearly black.
"Most of them are."
As they spoke, Mel led Hexia to a large mansion and stopped in front of it.
Surrounding the property was a waist-high wall. Though called a wall, in reality, an adult could simply step over to get inside. The white stone surface was slightly translucent, taking on a jade-like quality in the sunshine. The courtyard houses were built from the same material, designed in a style similar to classical Western manors, with purple tiles, transparent arched glass windows, tall doorsteps with columns, and the eaves were adorned with subtle patterns of waves and seashells.
In the courtyard stood three tall ancient trees, and beneath one lay a tiger with white markings, sound asleep.
Pushing open the lightweight white wrought iron gate, Mel entered with Hexia. The gentle sound of the opening gate and footsteps aroused the sleeping tiger under the tree. It opened its eyes, glanced at Mel as she entered, arched its back, stretched lazily, retracted its claws, then settled back to rest beneath the tree.
"This is ’Gourd’; don’t be afraid. He’s usually quite lazy and won’t attack people," Mel introduced as she carried her grey Lynx. As the cat spotted the distant tiger, it meowed and then leaped out, running towards the napping white tiger.
"The cat’s gone to play with it again," Mel said, no longer surprised by this, and continued leading Hexia towards the house.
Entering the grand hall on the first floor, an elderly butler with somewhat gray hair was already waiting there.
"This must be Miss Hexia, hello. My name is Perlan Burke, I am the butler here. Please take a seat; Lady Heather will be with you shortly," he said.
He invited them to sit, then brought over white porcelain cups gilded with gold and filled with brewed black tea, before quietly standing aside.
About two minutes later, footsteps descended from upstairs, and an elderly woman wearing a long dress, with neat hair, came down slowly. Her light purple hair was tinged with grey, suggesting she was perhaps in her seventies or eighties.
"I apologize for keeping Miss Hexia waiting." Upon reaching the hall, she greeted them briefly while Hexia presented the gifts she had brought—a bunch of fresh flowers dominated by the White Kite, along with a box of Eastern-style flowing cloud cakes.
Bringing gifts was something she decided on after consulting Annelli; although she didn’t care much for it personally, considering it was her first time visiting someone’s home, she chose to adhere to traditional etiquette as much as possible.
"You are thoughtful, Hexia, but there was really no need for such formalities. Ha ha, there’s no need for young people to follow these old customs," Lady Heather said with a simple wave of her hand, instructing the butler to take the gifts.
"It would be better to relax a bit. Speaking of which, I was fond of running around when I was younger. I often entered friends’ homes empty-handed, not minding at all, hehe~"
"Where did you use to go, ma’am?" Hexia had not yet ventured out of the Four-leaf Crystal Star Domain and only heard about other places through conversations.
"Oh, there were many places. I studied at a university in the central region of the Snow Orchid Star Domain. It’s not a large area, but the main residential star, Sea Shell α-3, has a pleasant climate. 80% of the planet is covered by ocean, and it hosts numerous venerable schools."

Reminiscing about the past, Lady Heather told Hexia about her university experiences, which included many events—her confusion over choosing a direction, the troubles of changing advisors, and the various incidents encountered during excursions with classmates. Gradually, both Hexia and Mel were absorbed in Lady Heather’s eventful past, and it took them a while to emerge from those stories.
"That’s so cool, Grandma had such interesting adventures. Why didn’t you tell me before?" Mel was a bit discontent.
"That’s because you were young and immersed in playing with small animals; I couldn’t exactly drag you over to listen by force," said Lady Heather with a kind smile.
"Now that you mention it, time flew by without us noticing. I’m not sure if Hexia grew a bit impatient listening to it all."
"Not at all, I’m actually very interested. It’s refreshing to learn so many new things," the girl sincerely spoke from the heart.
"That’s good to hear. If you’re interested, you’re welcome to visit more often. Mel and I will always welcome you," she added.
"Thank you, Lady. I’ll definitely come by again if I have the chance," she replied.
The two chatted about trivial matters before gradually moving on to the main topic.
"You must be curious why I invited you here, seeing as we didn’t know each other before," she began.
"Even though you don’t know me, I have some understanding of you. Come to think of it, I once saw your mother when she was a child, and she was a very adorable girl. I can’t believe it’s already been more than twenty years," she reminisced.
"Ahem," Hexia blinked, surprised to encounter someone who knew her mother.
"That was many years ago during a gathering. We discussed issues concerning the northern districts, and many notable representatives were invited, including the leaders from Jielou City. I think your mother must have been around 14 or 15 years old then. She came with her elders."
"She took a liking to a Snow Velvet Rabbit on sale in a pet shop while strolling through the Northern First District, but unfortunately, her elders refused to buy it for her. She cried with tears streaming down, looking so pitiful; that’s why it left a deep impression on me."
"Afterward, that is, last year, when you received the acceptance notice from Yuanting Academy, the academy sent representatives to negotiate with Edith’s side. Once your background came to light, which merited special attention, I learned that you are indeed the daughter of Gu Yongrong."
"Reflecting upon the past, it brings a sigh; one by one, the prominent factions from the northern districts have faded away. Now, only a small portion remain huddled in Northern First District."
"I invited you this time to reconnect and give you an insight into the past and current situation, and also to share with you the kinship we of the older generation once had."
"Currently, I am one of the trustees of Yuanting Academy, and my ancestors were among those who journeyed with the winds to this place, witnessing many great changes. I often reflect on the unpredictability of the world."
"Humans, when they get old, tend to reminisce and long for the past. Faces once familiar to me have all passed on before me; now, I can only look at their descendants for some solace."
"Lady Heather, when did you attend college?" Hexia suddenly felt that the elderly lady before her was certainly more than just seventy or eighty years old.
"Hehe, you ask questions so tactfully, young lady. I attended college in 1092, which was roughly 160 years ago."
"Still, in front of Lady Isabelle, I am the junior. She was already a well-known professor at the university when I was studying there."
"To be accurate, I should be considered as Mel’s great-grandmother, but when she was a child, she didn’t understand the term ’great-grandmother’ and simply called me ’grandmother,’ which continued on from there."
"Ah, so it’s wrong to call you ’grandmother’?" Mel interjected in surprise, having always thought that she was indeed her grandmother.
"It’s also right in a way. After all, being younger always sounds nicer, hehe," the elder woman chuckled, covering her mouth. Though her hair showed many white strands, the charm and beauty of her youth were still evident.
"It’s getting late; I’ll have the butler prepare lunch. We still have plenty of time to chat today."
"I’m also quite interested in hearing how you are getting on at Edith’s. If you encounter any challenges, perhaps I can offer you some advice."
"Though my body is old, I prefer not to admit it. I always like to be useful and prove my worth. If people remember me many years from now, that would be a joyous thing indeed."
"Now, come along; let’s head to the dining room on the other side. If we don’t, the butler might complain I’m being too chatty again, hehe."
"Not at all, Lady. You are as charming as you were in your youth; waiting for a lady of your grace is never a waste of time," the butler affirmed, walking out from the dining room area with a smile and a welcoming gesture.
"Ahaha, you! Back in the day, you were such an earnest child, and now you’ve learned to speak so coyly," Lady Heather said as she led the two toward the adjacent dining room.
