Mercenary's War-Chapter 2025 - 2002: You Shoot, I Observe.
Attending a party is more tiring than fighting a battle, but Gao Yang still didn’t stay overnight at Morgan’s house. He’s not used to it, so he ended up going to Jack’s studio and took Li Jinfang and the others along to the hotel.
The next day before dawn, Gao Yang was woken up by a phone call, then Alexander spoke rapidly: "I’m at Portland Airport, tell me the specific address, I’m coming over now."
Gao Yang groggily sat up, checked the time, and shouted, "Buddy, it’s five in the morning, is this appropriate?"
Grumbling, Gao Yang still got up and called Li Jinfang and the others, driving together to Portland Airport to pick up Alexander, who rushed overnight from Denver.
He received one thousand five million, the money’s already in the account, so Gao Yang, as the middleman, ought to respect Alexander’s dignity as the big spender.
Picked him up and headed straight to Jack’s studio. Although Jack doesn’t live at the studio, he stayed overnight without sleep to rush the job for Gao Yang and Peter’s guns.
When Jack came out yawning to open the door, Alexander’s expression was normal, but after Gao Yang introduced Jack and clearly stated that Jack would be modifying his gun, Alexander looked as if he suddenly realized he might’ve been taken for a ride.
Jack certainly doesn’t look like a gunsmith, especially when he extended his tattooed hand lackadaisically to bump fists with Alexander, who turned his handshake into a fist-bump and suddenly looked back at Gao Yang, full of doubt, "Where’s the gun?"
"Follow me."
Jack said weakly, then turned into the studio, grabbed the gun from the arsenal, and with a few boxes of bullets in hand, shouted, "Directly to the outdoor range, buddy, grab a few packs of beer from the fridge, we’re ready to go."
The outdoor range at Arilan Moson Studio is east-west oriented, with targets set on the east side. Generally speaking, no one tests guns early in the morning, so the sunrise affects the shooting.
Jack placed the gun at the shooting position, adjusted the spotting scope, grabbed a beer bottle, opened it casually, and shouted, "Who wants to test fire?"
Alexander hadn’t touched the gun yet and shouted, "Me."
"Alright, target distances are six hundred yards, eight hundred yards, and one thousand yards, scope is adjusted for long-range shooting, twelve times, zeroing distance four hundred yards, crosswind, wind speed two meters per second, begin."
Alexander inspected the chamber and magazine, checking everything. He swiftly loaded the magazine, racked the bolt to chamber a round, then softly hummed in surprise, as Jack’s modifications showcased differences from the factory model.
Adjusting his posture, Alexander aimed at the six hundred yard target, fired a shot, and immediately cried out in surprise.
"Hit, seven ring, bottom right."
This shot aimed at testing accuracy, so the target had rings. For civilians, seven rings at six hundred yards is decent, but for Jack and Gao Yang, it indicates Alexander’s gunmanship is quite poor.
"Want him to shoot?"
Jack tilted his head toward Gao Yang and asked, Alexander quickly replied, "No need, just that the trigger pull is light, not very familiar yet, watch the next one."
Alexander resumed aiming and soon fired another shot, Jack immediately said, "Ten rings, slightly right of the bullseye, buddy, mind letting him shoot to test the gun’s dispersion?"
Alexander, slightly annoyed, said, "I can test the gun’s limits, stop talking!"
Taking a deep breath, Alexander fired again.
"Bullseye."
"Bullseye."
"Bullseye, buddy, not bad."
After a set of five shots, Alexander stood, Jack gave way to the tripod-fixed scope and smiled, "Not bad."
Alexander leaned into the scope, discovering the four later shots clustered around a ping-pong ball sized area, which, at six hundred yards, was quite impressive.
Alexander was very satisfied, for a semi-automatic sniper rifle, this dispersion was outstanding. Indeed, it was better than his factory gun which could only cluster within a tennis ball sized area, a standout precision among semi-automatic weapons.
Before Alexander expressed his satisfaction, Jack said with a complex look, "Old chap, you should fire a few rounds, I’m off my game, unable to display this gun’s true capability."
Alexander felt insulted, Jack’s words were unacceptable for a legendary shooter, suggesting his Gunmanship wasn’t up to par.
The gun’s dispersion is uncontrollable, even if you aim accurately, bullets may stray. But if a gun’s spread fits a ping-pong ball size, and the shooter achieves a soccer ball size spread, the fault lies with the shooter.
Gao Yang approached the shooting table and sat down, swapped magazines, lifted the gun, carefully aimed, and fired.
Alexander quickly looked through the scope, seeing Gao Yang’s shot hit left-lower on the target, about a four-ring position; before mocking Gao Yang silently, he saw Gao Yang fire again.
The bullet holes overlapped, from a small hole into a larger one, Alexander realized Gao Yang wasn’t off-target but casually chose a point to shoot and observe the bullet spread.
The third shot missed overlapping but was very close, fourth shot overlapped again, fifth shot—same.
One big hole beside a small bullet hole; after five shots, Gao Yang set down the rifle and shouted, "How big?"
Alexander walked away from the scope, coughed softly, then nodded, "Very good."
Jack glanced through the scope, nodded in satisfaction, and smiled, "That’s more like it, dispersion enlarges at eight hundred yards, please continue, basically, at that distance, maintaining within an orange size is normal, otherwise it’s abnormal."
Intending to shoot himself, Alexander changed his mind, coughed lightly, then said to Gao Yang, "You continue shooting, I’ll observe. I need to watch closely, alright, start."
