Mercenary's War-Chapter 2015 - 1992: Two New Legs
Peter was very excited, extremely excited. Despite being in his forties, he was like a child in front of the doctor, doing whatever he was told immediately, swiftly and correctly.
When Peter removed his prosthetic leg, Diamond, who made 3D prosthetics, exclaimed exaggeratedly: "What on earth is this thing?"
Peter’s prosthetic leg was the most basic kind, essentially just a metal rod, so basic it couldn’t even be called a prosthetic. As a result, Peter’s gait was always a pronounced limp.
When the doctor saw Peter’s left leg, he immediately furrowed his brow and said loudly, "You’ve been very active, the muscles and tendons in your residual limb are deformed, doesn’t it hurt?"
"Yes!"
Peter’s reply was very straightforward.
The reason Peter was said to have half a leg was that his left leg had lost two-thirds of its muscle, along with the associated tendons and blood vessels. What remained was just the appearance and basic function. Under these circumstances, Peter’s ability to still persist with activities was a testament to his astonishing determination.
After a cursory examination, the doctor said with admiration on his face: "You can’t keep moving like this, or you won’t even be able to save your left leg. Actually, I suggest you could amputate the left leg too. With a prosthetic, you would find it easier to move compared to now."
Gao Yang, who heard this, was immediately angry. What kind of doctor gives such silly advice, suggesting Peter should amputate his left leg too, ridiculous.
But after hearing this, Peter said without hesitation, "Wouldn’t it be harder to move if I amputate the left leg?"
"That’s the case. Your left leg has lost most of its function, and it’s irreparable. No surgery or method could improve it. Do you know the Blade Runner? The famous sprinter from South Africa, he lost both his legs, yet he still runs extremely fast, and his daily life isn’t much affected."
Peter hesitated a little, looking at Gao Yang. Gao Yang immediately waved his hand, loudly saying, "No, don’t consider amputation. Since his leg was saved with great difficulty, losing it again here is out of the question. Think of another way."
"Mr. Peter’s leg can definitely be preserved; he just needs an auxiliary exoskeleton."
Mr. Joen, who had been silent, finally spoke up. He looked at Gao Yang, calmly and seriously saying, "Mr. Gao, our ongoing research can completely solve Mr. Peter’s problem. A single leg exoskeleton doesn’t require external power and is just an auxiliary device. It can bear weight but won’t hinder movement. If needed, we can also protect Mr. Peter’s foot, and I assure you, he can perform all normal actions with a partially functional leg, and even have strength beyond an ordinary person."
Gao Yang was very pleased. He said loudly, "Are you sure? How soon can we have a finished product?"
Joen held out one finger, softly saying, "A month, at most a month. Our full-body exoskeleton system has encountered a minor obstacle, but fortunately, my leg system is already developed and tested. For a normal person, a single leg component might not play a crucial role, but for Mr. Peter, it’s exactly what he needs."
Diamond, who made 3D prosthetics, adjusted his glasses and smiled, "My prosthetic can be finished in just a few days, only requires one scan. It has movable knee and ankle joints, allowing actions like a normal person. Of course, it’s a more complex prosthetic, requiring some time to learn and adapt before mastering its use, but once adjusted, believe me, Mr. Peter, you’ll love your new leg, I assure you."
Joen looked at Diamond, speaking soberly, "Mr. John, I suggest you delay the prosthetic, because if Mr. Peter uses the exoskeleton system and chooses to encase his foot, his left leg will be slightly extended. If you make it to his current height, it won’t match later."
Peter’s lips were trembling slightly, while Li Jinfang patted Peter’s shoulder with a smile. Peter glanced back at Li Jinfang, then started nodding excitedly.
Gao Yang was also quite satisfied, but he wasn’t wholly content, so he clapped his hands lightly and smiled, saying, "Very good, I’m satisfied with everyone’s plan. But, is there a better one? I mean, the best choice. I don’t know how to express it; I just mean a way to make Mr. Peter closer to his normal state."
Joen shook his head, saying softly, "We don’t have a better plan. The most we can do is further optimize materials and craftsmanship. My plan is the best method we currently have."
Diamond pondered for a moment, then nodded, "Unless there’s a new breakthrough, this is the best solution. Of course, using better materials to make it sturdier and withstand more vigorous activities is possible, but that would increase the price."
A doctor said, "My suggestion is for Mr. Peter to accept further examination and treatment immediately. We may not be able to restore his left leg further, but at least we can prevent it from worsening."
Gao Yang thought for a moment, regretfully saying, "Alright, let’s do it."
Diamond raised his hand with a smile, "Mr. Gao, making a prosthetic takes time, but before Mr. John’s exoskeleton is ready, I think Mr. Peter should at least switch to our company’s bionic prosthetic to adapt in advance. The production is swift; after scanning, it only takes a few hours to get the finished product. Of course, due to material reasons, it won’t be very sturdy, but it’s definitely good enough for daily use."
Gao Yang smiled, shook hands with Diamond, and then turned to Peter, saying: "Buddy, what are you waiting for? Go with the doctor and Mr. Diamond."
Peter nodded and said loudly, "Okay, I’m going. Hmm, can you go with me?"
Peter wanted Li Jinfang to accompany him; he seemed a bit nervous. Li Jinfang laughed loudly, saying, "Let’s go, I’ll go with you."
Peter left with the doctor and Diamond, then only Joen remained. Gao Yang turned around, smiled at Joen, and said, "Mr. Joen, I heard your research is currently in trouble due to a lack of funds."
Joen nodded, "Yes, the investor’s conditions were too harsh, and I couldn’t accept them. I heard from Tony Copfield that you’re interested in our research? Mr. Gao, would you be willing to take some time to let me introduce it to you?"
