Master Of None-Chapter 2857. Risky, But Fun
"So you are the rune carver that made a break through?"
"Rune artisan. Don’t go making me in to just a carver. I am an artisan. I know the history of runes you never even looked at." The grumbling was clearly the same as any grumpy manmny would be, but Walker wasn’t perturbed by that, he was more impressed to see the massive rune formation.
"You are that hero kid that girl Remey mentioned. She said you would bother me and you bother me just by standing there. So get on with whatever questions you have so I can go ahead and make some new history for those teachers looking in on all our business lately."
It was awkward to hear that Remey had been the one to handle this man when he wasn’t feeling well, but also made so much sense. She was the only one that would be able to handle someone like this. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
The old master alchemist who she had learned everything from also acted similarly. It was just a part of their generation maybe? Or Remey just had a habit of being around people like this. Whatever the case was, it was just the way things would be.
Yet, Walker did focus on the fact that teachers had been prying in to his business.
That could mean that the education system being created and growing was already reaching levels of the planning beyond his expectations.
First the idea had been to gather enough in formation to make basic structures. After that there would be tests to pick up on unique niches that students might fit in to. Allowing them to be able to be placed in to the best areas for education that would allow them the ability to grow as they needed.
Meaning that the gathering of information about today’s and yesterday’s rune formations and runes as a whole would be major. While it was not something that could easily be summed up, some tests and documents would need specific information that had to come from those knowledgeable.
This man clearly would be someone with that knowledge. Important to pass down but maybe a little harder to get from him due to his current focus.
"I was told you had an enlightenment while working on the angel’s ruins and the angel’s current floating island. From there you focused on your work until you were ill. Now, you are still here working even though you should be resting."
Putting the emphasis on the fact that he should be focusing on his health and maybe not working.
"That wasn’t a question." The stern and wrinkled face proved to be from years of looking carefully at reunifications and picking out all the issues. Finding the best flow and ensuring that the overall formation was ideal.
"Those layers were a pain to look at. They blurred together and were a mess of people who didn’t realize they were causing problems. But untangle all that yarn and we had a piece of art. Have you ever even looked at what those architects are doing? They make all these drawings for all these buildings and they can tell you where the first mark they made is on that parchment."
Now Walker was wondering where this was going and the old man realized that he had hooked him too.
"That means that’s what I did. I found the first rune carved and traced it all the way through that mess finding this damn piece of artwork. An entire formation that needs untangling because everyone who tried to improve it, fix it, or thought they knew better messed with it. This is the base of all of that and I can show you how it changed over the years. I will show everyone where their entire history of learning run formations messed up and got too messy!"
The rune artisan stood taller and laughed loudly as he tossed a mana gem toward the larger crystal in the center. He hadn’t even warned Walker or the several carvers that had just stood up and finished. He just laughed like a madman and knelt a little lower.
The ground shook as the runes began to flash with mana and draw everything in. The intricate patterns were much more than just earth runes or wind runes. They were ancient runes with weaknesses and mostly unfinished. Yet, they were patched together in ways that allowed a flow.
If this was the base set of runes used to create a formation, that meant it was the very original reason that the floating cities could exist in the first place. The first angels who created this would never have imagined that their work would be found yet again and used to begin the path of understanding all the rune formations for their entire race when finding their homes.
Sensing the mana and using his manipulation to gather more mana to speed it up, Walker also buffed everyone for general safety. That didn’t change as the run formation started to break from the ground proving that it was more than successful.
"Old man! How do you control this thing! Get us down!"
"Brat, that’s what the hero kid came for. To get us down. I didn’t bother with that control rune formation. It’s too new. It would interfere with this. But we are floating now, so enjoy the ride!" The cackling laughter was all but background to Walker as he realized they were now several feet in the air and still rising.
This old man rune artisan had set up the experiment without any way to control it because he wanted to see the original rune formation design and learn from it being activated. Walker had basically shown up to fix the problem the man knew he was about to create!
"Hero Walker, can you help us? The crazy old man did this with a fire ball trap rune formation once. He just does reckless things thinking it won’t matter because he is figuring out the origin of this rune or that rune. If he wasn’t so old he would have lit the whole city ablaze or flooded it experimenting with rune formations." The assistant was clearly the apprentice who had found the man ill after his enlightenment.
" This is why they cut that formation up again. They stuck pieces in to it to choose the height of the floating. Then they tried to make it free from the winds higher up so they added the other formation. Then they carved over the top of it because they wanted to move side to side instead of being caught in wind currents..."
The rambling of the rune artisan was being hastily written down by several attendants while Walker used wind pressure to force the slab of floating earth to halt. He could see nearby the shed that would be used to make the next experiment and realized that this was just the first step for today. He could be thrown in to several more situations like this.
"What? Not having fun like you said you would? Hero kid, look at the runes at your feet. They were inspired by naturally formed runes. Someone saw that and tried to make their own version. Runes might be the language of the world and someone wanted to have a hand in that. They just didn’t study hard enough for long enough. But they did well. Now find me a place that has runes that cause rocks and whatever else to float."
Several hours later after Walker had been through the same situation more times than he liked, everyone was thoroughly exhausted and the sun had set. However, Walker was focused on the fact that the old man, the rune artisan had mentioned making Walker find a naturally formed rune that caused stones to float.
While that sounded outside of what the normal naturally formed runes might do, it did sound interesting.
The idea had to have come from somewhere. A place floating in the air. While it could have been inspired by the fact that people could make projectiles and use wind magic to make them float, it could have come from the fact that angels could fly too.
But what if it came from someone witnessing a naturally formed rune that caused stones to float?
That question changed Walker’s perspective of naturally formed runes. If they could mix with one another to be more unique like the light and dark naturally formed runes within onyx’s established home territory for the serpents, then why couldn’t that happen elsewhere with earth mana and other manas to make a gravity rune naturally formed causing rocks to float?
What was saying that that alone was not enough to inspire an entire city to fly through the sky?
Whether it was the case or not, Walker knew if he could fund such a naturally formed rune, then he could share a lot more than just knowledge with the rune artisan.
