Master Of None-Chapter 2824. Steps Forward
Walker watched carefully as the large beast glared at him. He could tell it knew more than what the other wolves did. The awakening of an ancient monster bloodline like a Fenrir known for its incredible strength and magical control over ice was something that had to come with major differences compared to the great tundra wolves.
It was also due to the fact that these wolves had lived in proximity to a naturally formed rune capable of adding to the environment being a tundra for generations. It was a major factor for their growth and safety for a long time. Therefore, the intelligence increases from both awakening the bloodline and also being the strongest within the pack.
This was a leader that understood it could represent the pack and protect the pack by itself. That sort of leadership intelligence was nothing compared to a monster. But saying that it was as intelligent as the world's recognized races would be a lie. It was missing the social aspects that other races developed.
Meaning that the slow progress of the great tundra wolves was most likely related to the lack of encountering new lands and other races. It was limited by this safe haven it had lived in. perfect for growing at a slow pace and developing its young but not ideal for the growth that other intelligent monsters had when they stepped toward becoming a fully recognized race.
Walker had just offered a step though. It was one that made it very clear there was nothing that could stop it now. Curiosity had already sparked in the souls of a few of the great tundra wolves. Their minds found the single question of where Walker had come from as important to them.
They wondered how he was here and how he was interacting with their leader. Beyond this, they also wondered just what he was. Enough to spur a new generation for them that didn't wish to stand in one place right now.
They would wish to know more.
Curiosity was a dual bladed weapon. It could push them to understand that they were not alone and could grow beyond what they knew now. Could allow them to overcome unknown and known hurdles.
Or
It could push them into unprecedented dangers. It could lead them to face beings that could end their entire group easily. Just as Walker could clearly stand on par with their leader without any trouble. That level of terrifying strength was right there to see and feel.
The movement of the small fairy dragons awakening from slumber seemed to push the fenrir wolf to make a choice. To grab on to the feeling that their pack could grow faster and stronger. It was even better feeling the unique flow of mana around the fairy dragons and noticing that the being, Wakker, who had somehow made this all happen was showing kindness.
There was a deep feeling instinctively when a leader or predator found a threat. The fenrir wolf knew that Walker could be a threat capable of ending themselves and everyone else they protected. Knew it to the core o f what they were.
Yet, that didn't happen and instead a feeling of security and even excitement pulled at them. Something told them that they were able to gain a lot more by accepting the words they didn't quite understand. Language wasn't theirs and they had their own way of communicating. They could even have the pack move to defend or attack around them just with a simple thought.
However, this being used mana and the strange notification from part of the world that they knew existed but could not truly interact with.
'The first fenrir wolf species has taken a major step in becoming the first of their species to be recognized as one who could become an intelligent race.'
The system acknowledged the actions of the fenrir wolf and Walker felt that the quest he had offered was accepted. He also felt that he had to fulfill his side of the bargain right now. Not only would he need to come and assist these wolves if they were in danger or need, but he also had to help the pups.
With a step forward, the fenrir wolf stuck right next to him ensuring that every action and step was not against what was safe. The other wolves backed off slightly but the worry on some brought them forward. Protecting their young was more than just protecting their territory. It was a way for them to survive forever rather than just for the moment.
The mothers in particular were watching Walker and even growling slightly while they trailed behind the fenrir wolf and Walker.
As Walker started to channel his own life mana in to his hand, the fenrir wolf realized that the mana was beneficial. It was a feeling of warmth that came from more than just the sun or the cool feeling of mana building up in their body. It was a soul grabbing feeling that inspired it and encouraged it. A perfect benefit for the young pups that could barely walk or stumble around that had been carefully herded in to the area around the naturally formed ice rune.
"This is life mana. We all possess it and letting it be encouraged or spurred will allow for better growth. The life mana in little ones like this hold all their potential. You were able to step beyond just a great tundra wolf and awaken the fenrir bloodline hidden within your species. They might have a better chance, or they might just be able to grasp their potential a little earlier."
Walker understood that the fenrir wolf did not understand what he was saying perfectly, but some bits and pieces seemed to get through to it as a small huff of approval followed by the tiniest growl of warning as Walker began to let the life mana interact with all of the thirty or so pups huddled together. The mothers stepped forward and watched but had calmed seeing that it was something beneficial and not terrifying or dangerous.
The pups on the other hand started to squeal and attempt to bark to get attention. A few even released a few small howls to get their mothers to see that they were louder and stronger.
What was really happening within their bodies was more complicated. Walker's interactions with life mana were not extremely numerous and he tried not to play around with life mana itself. The same rules he held for death mana.
Where it was different was the fact that allowing others to sense their own life mana and understand the levels of potential within them was not the same as having an affinity for life mana and magic. It was just giving them the perception needed to pursue much more of what they already were and had to live up to.
For the great tundra wolves, it might be some hidden skills and abilities. Or it could be the Fenrir bloodline left by the ancient monster fenrir.
The hope was that they would grasp that bloodline as Walker pulled his hand away and a few of the pups took steadier steps or opened their eyes for the first time. The moment that this happened, the mothers and a few other great tundra wolves rushed forward sniffing and making whining sounds. It seemed they were communicating and showing excitement.
It was because they could see the energy and benefits of what Walker had done. It was also because they knew that this was a turning point. They had the strongest generation yet right before their eyes and they could sense that it meant more strength would come.
Any monster that foolishly tried to hunt them or hunt in their territory would know very quickly what it was like to be hunted. They would not have to deal with any who were too foolish to cross their paths without peace of mind and in hand.
"The fairy dragons will work with you, I am sure. There are quite a few and the herbs they eat will grow well here. Protect them like they are part of your pack. I hope that I can visit often enough to see how quickly your little ones grow. I can tell that a few of those pups are your children too."
Walker spoke softly and could see his intentions were heard. As he stepped in to the air, a few of the great tundra wolves noticed while the fenrir wolf stood tall and watched. It was a leader watching a new and mysterious ally that communicated strangely but brought great things. It was an ally that asked for help and readily gave help as well.
A new concept for them, but one that the fenrir wolf could understand meant more than what was spoken. Their race was soon to be seen by the world.
