"They are great," the old granny said as she nodded.
"They are," he mumbled as he put on the armor. The armor was also dark and gold in color, just like the great sword.
[ Due to not meeting the equipment's conditions ]
[ The overall stats of the item will be reduced by 30% ]
He nodded as he took out the next item. It wasn't found in this cave but was something he obtained after killing a Merman. The item was called Mermen Gills, allowing the user to breathe underwater as long as it remained undamaged.
"Ready to get your growth-type sword?" she asked.
This 𝓬ontent is taken from freeweɓnovel.cѳm.
Blade nodded and carefully exited the cave, arriving back at the waterfall. He took a deep breath before jumping inside. The spirit of the old granny continued to accompany him. As Blade looked around, he easily moved underwater thanks to the Mermen Gills, allowing him to swim effortlessly without any resistance.
"Human!!" a sharp voice echoed.
The Mermen also spotted him, and immediately, they reacted. This must be one of the caves where the Mermen resided.
"Meat is here!!" they shouted as they rushed toward him.
"Well, my speed isn't reduced thanks to this new armor," he smirked, gripping his sword. Normally, ones speed is reduced under water but thanks to the armor it is no longer the case.
"Granny, is there a sword art that works well with the water element?" he asked.
The old granny chuckled at his question but then sighed. "Hmm... it reminds me—I was planning to give you a sword technique when you mastered blacksmithing. Though it wasn't the way as I had intended, you still got it nonetheless," she said, shaking her head.
"Go defeat them, and I will give you something," she added.
Blade could swear he saw a hint of mischief in her smile.
"Damn, what kind of test are you giving me now, old granny?" Blade muttered as the quest log updated.
It was called Water Carving Sword Art. Unlike his previous Earth Carving Sword Art, which was powerful on land, this one was specifically designed for the water element. This meant that underwater, its effectiveness would be even greater, just as the Earth Carving Sword Art dominated on solid ground.
[ Quest Updated! ]
Quest: Trial of the Water Blade
Objective: Defeat 20 Mermen
Reward: Water Carving Sword Art
Failure: None – but without this technique, underwater combat will remain difficult.
Blade looked around and sighed. "Well, this is going to be difficult," he thought as he watched the Mermen circling around him, darting through the water with incredible speed.
The water was their domain, naturally giving them the advantage in strength and agility. But at the same time, it also restricted him, making him slower and limiting his combat techniques. His usual sword skills weren't as effective in this environment.
Blade tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes darting between the Mermen as they weaved through the water with unnatural speed. They weren't attacking immediately—instead, they were testing him, waiting for the right moment to strike.
"Tch. Annoying bastards."
One of them lunged from his left, trident aimed straight for his ribs. Blade twisted his body, narrowly dodging, and countered with a horizontal slash. However, the water resistance slowed his attack just enough for the Merman to evade it.
"Damn it. My swings are sluggish down here."
Before he could recover, another Merman struck from behind. Blade barely managed to turn in time, blocking the attack with his blade, but the impact pushed him back. The force of their blows was stronger than he expected.
Taking a deep breath, Blade adjusted his stance, focusing on the movement of the water around him. Instead of forcing brute strength into his attacks, he let the currents guide him. As another Merman rushed in, he sidestepped, allowing the momentum of the water to carry his body, and slashed in a fluid motion.
His sword cut clean through the Merman's chest.
"Okay, I'm getting the hang of it," he nodded to himself.
Instead of rushing toward them, he changed his approach—waiting for the Mermen to come to him. The moment they attacked, he dodged at the right time and countered with precise strikes.
Blade steadied his breathing, his grip firm but relaxed. Instead of forcing his attacks, he let the Mermen make the first move. One of them darted toward him, spear thrusting forward. Blade twisted his body at the last moment, the weapon barely grazing past him. In the same motion, he brought his sword down in a smooth arc, slicing through the Merman's back.
Using the opportunity when the Merman staggered, Blade struck directly at its neck with his skill. Though he was underwater, the earth around him provided an advantage. Utilizing the rocky underwater terrain, he activated the Earth Carving Sword Art and unleashed a powerful attack.
[ You have killed a Merman (Level 198) ]
[ You have gained ... ]
"Good," Blade nodded, satisfied with his first kill. "Only 19 more to go."
