Marrying His Nemesis: Kicking My Scumbag Fiancé Away!-Chapter 77: Do You... Really Love Him?
The barbecue tongs bounced on the ground, producing a few harsh noises.
The three people’s gazes simultaneously turned toward the tongs on the ground.
"Chloe, what’s wrong?"
Nathan Foster also came out from the living room with the meat, hearing the sharp sound of the tongs falling, he hurried over.
Seraphina Thorne bent down and picked up the tongs from the ground.
"Oh, nothing, brother, I accidentally dropped the tongs," Chloe Foster took the tongs Seraphina picked up and smiled at both of them, "You two go in first, I’ll wash the tongs."
Turning around, Chloe Foster quickly walked back to the living room.
Seraphina noticed her complexion, somewhat pale.
At this moment, Nathan Foster also saw Seraphina and Ethan Sterling, a trace of an unusual expression flashed through the man’s eyes but was quickly hidden.
"Ethan, Seraphina, you’re here!"
Walking around the car hood, Ethan Sterling reached out to embrace Seraphina’s shoulder, handing the champagne in his hand to Nathan Foster.
"Your favorite, pink champagne!"
"Wow, President Sterling really went all out today," Nathan Foster joked with a smile, opening the gate, "Come on in?"
He led them to the garden’s barbecue table, shaking the wine in his hand.
"You guys sit first, I’ll open the wine."
He took the wine to the kitchen, Chloe Foster was standing by the sink, washing the tongs in her hand.
Walking up behind her, Nathan Foster raised his right hand, holding his sister’s shoulder.
"I’m sorry, Chloe, I should have told you earlier."
Chloe Foster turned around, burying her face in the man’s chest.
After a while, she finally lifted her face.
"Why, why is Ethan Sterling with Seraphina?"
"This..." Nathan Foster gently shook his head, softly patting her back, "I’m not really sure either. If you’re not feeling well, go upstairs and rest. I’ll entertain the guests."
Chloe Foster lifted her face again, forcing a smile.
"I’m okay!"
Seeing the redness in the young girl’s eyes, Nathan Foster frowned, sighing quietly.
"Alright, wait until I open the wine, then we’ll go outside together."
Nathan Foster opened the champagne, Chloe Foster holding a glass. The brother and sister went back to the garden together.
Ethan Sterling stood up, taking the wine from Nathan Foster’s hand.
"Here, let me pour!"
Seraphina sat by the table, her gaze swept over Nathan Foster, landing on Chloe Foster’s face.
The girl’s eyes were a bit red, showing she had cried.
Ethan Sterling poured two glasses of wine, gently coughing.
"You two ladies shouldn’t drink; how about some juice instead?"
"Yes, yes," Nathan Foster echoed, "Seraphina still has to drive later; you both drink juice."
The barbecue table was rectangular; Ethan Sterling and Seraphina sat on one side, Nathan Foster siblings sat on the other.
Nathan Foster picked up the prepared meat and placed it on the grill.
Seraphina happened to sit downwind, and the barbecue scent irritated her throat, causing an itch.
She turned her head, suppressing a few coughs.
"Seraphina!" Ethan Sterling placed the juice cup on the table, holding her shoulder, "Let’s switch seats."
His tone wasn’t a question, but a statement, commanding.
Seraphina glanced at Chloe Foster sitting across from her, said nothing, and obediently stood up to sit across from Nathan Foster.
Ethan Sterling sat in her spot, picking up the wine glass.
"Come, let’s have a toast!"
Chloe Foster lifted her face, staring at Ethan Sterling.
"For what?"
Facing her gaze, Ethan Sterling somewhat awkwardly lowered his lashes.
"For... reacquaintance!" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"Yes, yes, for reacquaintance, a toast!"
Nathan Foster raised his glass, and Seraphina also lifted her juice cup.
The four gently clinked their glasses.
Seraphina noticed that Chloe Foster only clinked glasses with Ethan Sterling, not with her.
Everyone was chatting while grilling; the two men actively took on the responsibility of barbecuing.
Next to Nathan Foster was the meat rack; he was responsible for placing the meat on the grill.
Ethan Sterling used the tongs to flip the meat on the rack, controlling the heat.
Seeing the first wave of grilled meat was ready.
Ethan Sterling picked up the grilled beef from the rack, noticing the red chili powder on top.
He extended his arm, placing the meat on Chloe Foster’s plate.
Seraphina had respiratory issues and always avoided spicy food.
Only now, Seraphina’s mind was far from the barbecue.
So naturally, she did not notice these details.
With both hands around the juice cup, staring at the empty plate in front of her, she lowered her long lashes to hide her eyes.
Even though she repeatedly told herself inside.
No matter what was going on between Ethan Sterling and Chloe Foster, it had nothing to do with her.
She wasn’t in a position to care, nor to ask.
But still...
An indescribable emotion continued to spread rapidly, weighing heavily on her chest.
Just like the orange juice in her glass, which she liked the least.
Bitter and astringent, with a slight bitterness.
"Ethan!" noticing Seraphina across from him, Nathan Foster cleared his throat, "You’re only giving meat to Chloe, Seraphina’s plate is still empty?"
Chloe Foster’s gaze swept over her plate piled with a mountain of meat, then looked at Seraphina’s empty plate.
In her eyes, there was a fleeting hint of delight.
Ethan Sterling frowned, glancing at the meat on the grill.
The Foster siblings loved spicy food; it seemed all the meat was spicy.
"It’s okay, Seraphina isn’t hungry yet; she’ll eat some vegetables later."
"Yes!" Seraphina cooperatively smiled, "You all eat first, I’m not much of a meat eater."
"You’re so thin; just eating vegetables isn’t enough?"
Nathan Foster smiled as he reached over with his chopsticks, taking a piece of meat and putting it into Seraphina’s plate.
"Here, this beef is very tender; it’s Chloe’s favorite, try it."
Seraphina picked up the meat and put it in her mouth.
The spice was too strong, rushing into her throat and nasal cavity, choking and burning.
In front of the hosts, she was too embarrassed to spit it out, grabbing the cup, she gulped down several large mouthfuls of juice to suppress the discomfort.
Her throat still burned slightly.
Ethan Sterling turned around, concerned, holding her back.
"Are you okay?"
Seraphina lifted her face, trying hard to smile, "Just a bit spicy."
"I’m sorry, Seraphina!" Chloe Foster apologized, "I didn’t know you don’t like spicy food."
"Ethan, really, Seraphina can’t take spicy; why didn’t you mention it?" Nathan Foster also showed regret, "I’ll go bring some vegetables; they’re not spicy."
Seraphina held the juice cup; from her throat to her stomach, it was burning.
Her chest felt as if stuffed with a big ball of cotton, making her almost unable to breathe.
By this time, Ethan Sterling probably had only Chloe Foster in his eyes; how could he notice her?
Her empty stomach was stirred by the orange juice and chili, gradually beginning to ache.
Seraphina couldn’t hold it anymore, stood up.
"Eat, I’ll go to the restroom."
Ethan Sterling put down the barbecue tongs, standing to follow her, but Chloe Foster was a step ahead, standing up.
"You guys drink, I’ll accompany Seraphina."
Ethan Sterling was about to say something when Nathan Foster’s hand reached across the table, grabbing his arm.
"Girls going to the restroom, what are you joining in for? Come on, let’s toast!"
Ethan Sterling glanced at Seraphina’s back, having no choice but to sit back down.
Seraphina followed Chloe Foster to the restroom in the living room.
Closing the door, turning on the faucet.
She bent over, retching for a while in front of the sink.
With nothing in her stomach, she retched a few times, only spitting out some gastric acid.
She splashed water on her face, composed herself, and walked out of the restroom.
Outside the door, Chloe Foster leaned against the opposite bar, watching her intently.
"I really didn’t expect that your husband would be Ethan Sterling."
"Really?" Seraphina lowered her lashes, avoiding Chloe Foster’s gaze, "They’re still waiting outside; let’s go out."
At this moment, she only felt like a child who had taken someone else’s beloved toy, feeling inexplicably guilty.
Seraphina turned to leave, Chloe Foster stepped forward, grabbing her arm.
"Do you... really love him?"
