Chapter 44: Gunshots.

The two vans chasing after them soon screeched to a halt outside the abandoned building. Doors slid open violently, and ten men from each group making twenty in total jumped out with their AK-47s gripped tightly in their hands. Their boots thudded heavily against the cracked concrete as they advanced into the dim abandoned building.

"Just come out, okay?" one of the men, dressed entirely in black, shouted, his voice echoing through the empty space. "Make this easy for us and for yourself." His tone carried a cold, threatening finality.

But just then....

Boom!

A gunshot split the air. The man who had spoken jerked violently as the bullet pierced straight through his skull. He collapsed instantly, falling face-first into a pool of his own rapidly spreading blood.

A stunned silence lasted all of half a second.

Then chaos erupted. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"Take him down!" someone screamed.

The remaining attackers unleashed a storm of bullets, firing wildly and repeatedly at the spot where Alex had taken the shot. The muzzle flashes lit the darkness like frantic lightning, the deafening echoes bouncing off the ruined walls.

They kept firing and firing....long after the magazines should have emptied, long after their anger had eaten away their logic. But when the barrage finally stuttered to a stop, an eerie realization struck them.

They hadn’t hit Alex.

They hadn’t even grazed him.

Instead, they had only worsened their frustration.

They were reloading, ready to begin another reckless round when....

A faint golden smoke drifted into the air.

It curled around them slowly at first... then thickened with startling speed, filling the entire building. Visibility dropped to zero. Confusion turned into panic.

"What the....?"

"What is this?!"

Seconds later, a suffocating scent slammed into them.....wild, musky, of something unknown but poisonous.

The men began dropping to their knees as it weaken all while their hands tremble uncontrollably, forcing their guns to clatter to the ground.

Their lungs felt too tight to draw breath. Their chests clenched painfully.

Most of them clutched their necks desperately as they wheezed, fighting for air that refused to enter their lungs.

Then...

A shadow stepped out of the golden haze.

Alex.

His eyes glowed an unnatural, luminous gold beneath the dim light. His face was hidden behind a black mask that concealed every hint of his identity, but the aura....thick, golden, and overwhelmingly predatory clung to him like a second skin.

He approached the men slowly, deliberately.

Some tried to crawl away, but their limbs refused to obey.

Alex knelt down to their level, watching them writhe. Their eyes were already bloodshot from lack of oxygen.

A soft scoff escaped him.

"How dare you come after me?" he asked, voice low and layered with mocking amusement. "You must really have a death wish... which I’ll gladly fulfill."

He rose to his full height, the golden smoke still swirling around him. With a controlled exhale, he dialed down the suffocating potency of his dormant killer-instinct pheromones just enough for the men to remain conscious.

Then he reached for the gun at his waist.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Gunfire exploded through the abandoned building. Alex’s aim was precise, merciless. One by one, the attackers’ heads snapped back as bullets tore through their skulls. Bodies fell hard against the ground, blood pooling and spreading across the floor.

When the sound of gunshot faded, only two men remained alive.....one from each group. Both trembled violently, soaked in sweat, barely clinging to life.

Alex walked toward them slowly.

"Who sent you?" he asked, his voice cold, anger sharp in every syllable. "Talk. Maybe and only maybe...I’ll spare your lives."

"I... I don’t know who sent us," the man in black stammered, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "His face... it wasn’t revealed. I was just paid....paid more money than I’ve ever seen in my life. They gave me a picture of the target to kill but... here you are. You... you saved the target instead."

"I... I don’t know who sent us either," the second man said, dressed in all red, fear making his words spill out in a rush. "Her face was covered. She only transferred the money and sent the picture. A huge amount. I couldn’t refuse even if I wanted to."

Alex’s eyes narrowed.

"A man and a woman?" He scoffed softly. "Fine. The man is Sabe. But who... is the woman?"

Neither had an answer.

Alex breathed out slowly. "Alright. I’ll spare you both." His tone shifted into steel. "But you will deliver a message to your bosses. Tell them the target isn’t as easy as they think. If they keep sending people..." He tilted his head slightly. "They’ll only get more bodies in return. That’s a promise."

The men nodded desperately.

"Now," Alex added, voice dropping to a warning growl, "get the hell out of here before I change my mind."

Despite their weakened state, they scrambled to their feet and stumbled out of the building. Moments later, the roaring engines of their vans echoed as they fled in full speed.

Only after the sound faded did Alex step outside.

Damien was still in the car, gripping the steering wheel tightly, his entire body trembling. His head hung low, shoulders quivering with silent shock.

Alex tapped the car window.

Damien jumped, immediately scrambling out of the vehicle, still shaking uncontrollably, fear written all over his face.

"You actually killed them all... and left only two men out of twenty burly men sent after us?" Damien asked, one eyebrow raised high as he folded his arms across his chest. His voice shook slightly, caught between shock and reluctant admiration. "Woah... You’ve grown more heartless. I thought you were only going to punish them like you always do but it turns out you killed them."

Alex let out a sharp scoff. "Should I have allowed them to kill me then?" he shot back, raising a brow in disbelief. "Those motherfuckers were sent to take me out. What did you expect me to do....hug them?" He shook his head. "Anyway, where are our men? They should’ve shown up by now to collect the bodies and bury them."

As if on cue, ten burly figures emerged silently from the bushes. They bowed their heads respectfully to Alex and Damien before heading into the abandoned building. With practiced efficiency, they began lifting the dead bodies....some still twitching involuntarily and carried them off toward the forest path they had come from. There, a massive hole had already been dug earlier, prepared while Alex was slaughtering the attackers. The men disappeared into the darkness, disposing of the corpses one by one.

Damien watched them for a moment before turning back to Alex. "So... who’s the leader of those two groups?" he asked, curiosity written plainly across his face.

"They don’t know," Alex replied with a low, irritated scoff. "But from what they said, the people who hired them also work under someone else. The one who sent the first group was a man obviously Sabe, we both know that useless bastard. And the second group was hired by a woman." His eyes narrowed. "A woman I’ve never had any dealings with before. Now some mysterious woman wants me dead too. Interesting."

"That’s true," Damien murmured, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "But since both the man and the woman work for someone higher up... then it’s safe to say the woman takes orders from a man as well. Meaning the real leader of both groups is a man. Especially since you don’t deal with women at all." His voice grew serious. "Anyway... were you hurt? You told me to get out and let you handle everything alone."

"Of course I’m good," Alex said with a dismissive shrug, sliding into the driver’s seat as he spoke. "They weren’t even that skilled. I’ve fought toddlers with more coordination." He watched as the ten burly men finished their burial task and climbed back into the bus they had arrived in. "But we should be prepared for more attacks."

Damien blinked. "More attacks? You actually want them to attack you again?" He slipped into the passenger seat beside Alex, still baffled. "Instead of dealing with Sabe immediately, considering we already know he’s one of the leaders....you want to wait?"

Alex’s lips curled into a warm, mischievous smile. "There’s no rush," he said calmly. "Where’s the fun if I end it too quickly? I still want to play around with the amateur clowns they’re sending before I finally go after their leaders." He started the engine with a smooth turn of the key. "Besides, we still don’t know who the second leader is. We find her first then we strike."

Damien nodded slowly, though worry lingered in his eyes. "Fine... but I still think you’re enjoying this too much."

Alex just smirked and drove them away from the abandoned building, the tires crunching over broken gravel.

Boom! 💥

A thunderous explosion tore through the silence behind them. Damien yelped, instinctively covering his ears as his heart slammed against his ribs. He turned around in the seat and his eyes widened.

The abandoned building was engulfed in flames, blazing high into the sky as the walls collapsed inward.
