Mage Legend-Chapter 823 - 56: Crossfire (Part 4)
The group of Red Dragons wouldn't bother verifying the document's authenticity—though Zilvra, to ensure the success of the plan, had indeed stolen the original deed of the Five Realms Fortress. Such an ancient Black Dragon would never lie to his kin for the sake of lowly humans. The Red Dragons immediately believed the Black Dragon's words.
Seeing his kin beginning to waver, the Black Dragon added fuel to the fire, saying, "I don't know how you were convinced, but in any case, I think the price isn't enough to sell out all your dignity, is it? If all the dragons here were as shameless as Kobolds, with deceit and baseness running through their veins, then I must prove there is at least one dragon in this world that is free, honorable, and noble!"
Zilvra, hearing these words from the All-Knowing Tower, couldn't help but spit: "This Black Dragon, didn't he look down on the speech I wrote for him? Why is he using it now?"
The Red Dragons discussed among themselves, quickly gained altitude, and withdrew from the battlefield. Whether or not the giant serpent would ultimately win was of no consequence to them. Even if they didn't plunder the Five Realms Fortress, there were other places on this continent where they could roam. However, they didn't retreat too far, keeping the situation within sight. As long as the Black Dragon died, they wouldn't mind taking this land.
The Black Dragon knew it was impossible to persuade the Red Dragons to switch sides; this was already the best outcome he could hope for. Countless Gargoyles, like a swarm of locusts, continued to pounce toward the All-Knowing Tower after the dragons had flown away.
The Black Dragon maneuvered, avoiding the crest of the enemy's charge, and launched an attack from the side. Powerful acid exploded into clouds of green mist in midair, corroding the bodies of the Gargoyles. However, these creatures did not rely on wings to fly; their movement was supported by mysterious magic. Even if they lost their wings, they could glide a distance and then crash toward the ground of the All-Knowing Tower like massive stones.
The Dwarves began to retaliate with the crossbow cannons, and only they had the strength to control such large weapons. Since the imagined dragons weren't attacking, the Dwarves swapped out their Dragon Slaying Spears and continuously fired heavy capture nets. These devices would quickly envelop the Gargoyles upon impact and, leveraging tremendous force, yank them violently to the ground.
Even the sturdy bodies of the Gargoyles could not withstand the damage from such a fall. Any creature that fell would ultimately turn into a pile of rubble, becoming mere decorations on the land.
Yet numerous Gargoyles managed to break through the aerial net and land on the platforms of the All-Knowing Tower. Their primary target was to destroy those crossbow cannons. However, the Dwarf Warriors would not let them succeed easily. Their Mountain Opening Hammers and Titan Chisels were perfectly suited to dealing with hard stone, and Dwarves were naturally adept at finding the weaknesses in every piece of rock. They swung their robust arms, striking at the crevices on the Gargoyles' bodies. There was a miserable scream, and with a bang, the opponents disintegrated into a heap of explosive dust.
Consequently, the Gargoyles ceased attempts at close combat with the Dwarves—while they had some advantage when flying, they were at a complete disadvantage in ground melee. Many Gargoyles frantically hurled themselves at the Dwarf Warriors, knocking them off the All-Knowing Tower entirely.
Fortunately, Zilvra had anticipated this potential scenario, coercing—since persuading this group of Dwarves was indeed difficult—the Dark Elf forced them to tie safety ropes around their waists. Thus, the Dwarves would merely dangle from the edge of the All-Knowing Tower's platform, eliminating the danger of falling completely.
The Rock Spirits were responsible for hauling the Dwarves back up, and only they had the strength to drag such heavy bodies.
After this battle, the Dwarves added another taboo beyond "sea-sickness"—"vertigo from hanging."
