Chapter 135: Invisible Predator

Saturday morning crept in with golden rays seeping through the curtains, painting streaks across Jayden’s bare chest. His breath came in slow and steady, the rhythm of someone who’d already run a few miles before most people even opened their eyes.

His feet hit the pavement in a blur of motion as he jogged back from the park, sweat glistening across his body like a warrior fresh from training. His muscles burned in a way that told him he was alive. But also, that he was... stuck.

The past day had been frustrating. He’d spent hours trying to refine his Strength Mastery—lifting heavy stones, using mental focus, practicing control. And still, nothing. The force felt dormant, out of reach. Like trying to grip smoke. He wasn’t weak, no, but he wasn’t where he needed to be either.

Jayden reached the front door of the house, exhaled, and wiped his brow. After a cold shower and a change of clothes, he stood in front of his mirror, towel still draped around his neck. His fingers moved with purpose as he summoned his system interface, the translucent HUD appearing like a projection from his soul.

He glanced through his stats but his gaze was fixed on on option:

[Stat Points: 20]

He hovered over the allocation grid, fingers twitching. Then he made his choice.

Jayden exhaled in satisfaction... then paused. A strange pulse had suddenly crawled through his skin. A tingle in his spine. Something was shifting.. unfurling inside him.

He inhaled sharply.

And in that exact moment, his heart stopped cold.

He blinked at the mirror. Then blinked again, his eyes widening in shock.

His reflection was gone.

The mirror was still there. The bathroom still there. His clothes, his surroundings—but he wasn’t. It was as if his body had dissolved into the air itself.

"What the...?" he exhaled. And as soon as he let go of his breath, his body shimmered back into view.

He stared wide-eyed at his reflection, heart pounding.

"Was that what I think it was?"

He leaned forward, studying his reflection, then took another breath and this time held it in. Focused. Then willed himself to vanish.

And in an instant, his reflection vanished once more. He was gone.

Invisible.

An invisible grin stretched across his invisible face. He could feel the shift.. the gentle pull of energy folding around him like a cloak, bending the light and rendering him completely unseen.

Then, the system chimed.

[Invisibility has been mastered]

[Host can now use the ability; Invisibility:

Type: Light Refraction / Cloaking

Description:

Invisibility allows the user to manipulate light waves around their body, rendering themselves unseen to the naked eye. This ability can also distort sound and thermal signatures at higher levels, making the user nearly undetectable by conventional means.

Effects & Capabilities:

Basic Light Refraction:

- Bends light around the user’s body, making them visually undetectable.

- Duration: 30 seconds to 2 minutes (depending on focus and energy reserves).

Sound Dampening (Early Stage):

- Muffles footsteps and breathing slightly, but does not fully silence the user.

Thermal Masking (Unstable):

- Partial reduction of body heat signature (may still be detected by advanced sensors).

Partial Cloaking:

- Can choose to make only certain body parts invisible (e.g., arm, head).

*Note: At beginning stage, user is advised to hold their breath to activate the ability]

Jayden slowly exhaled and reappeared, standing there with a wild grin like a kid who just unlocked cheat codes in a real-world RPG.

He laughed. "I actually did it."

He had finally activated Invisibility. A true game-changer.

Thus could enable him to sneak up on his opponents and deal damage before they can even detect him. And even though at the moment, he needed to hold his breath to activate it, Jayden wasn’t bothered.

He could hold his breath longer than most people. His mother had drilled that into him during underwater survival training when he was ten. Five whole minute... 300 silent, unseen seconds. More than enough time to sneak behind an enemy, slide a dagger under their ribs, and be gone before they hit the ground.

Jayden was elated. He tested it again.. hold breath, vanish, walk silently across the room, reappear.

And again.

Each time smoother. Quieter. Deadlier.

Jayden’s gaze turned mischievous. "Hehe. Maybe I should prank Jessica."

But the thought died just as quickly. He remembered the pistol of wolfsbane she kept hidden in her room. The one she swore she would use anything he messed up.

Jayden shook his head. "Nope. Definitely not worth it."

He was about to return to his research... plans of Chthonix hunts and elemental counter-theory still swirling in his head, when a sudden thought sparked.

A better idea.

He grabbed a shirt, threw on his black track pants and sneakers, then zipped up a dark jacket and headed out. But he didn’t head to the park this time.

He headed east... toward the forest.

The same forest where he had first fought the Winter wolf. The same one where his life changed.

Only now... he wasn’t going in as the prey.

He was going in as the invisible predator.

And the beasts wouldn’t even know what hit them

...

The forest was quiet. Too quiet.

But that silence didn’t last.

A tremor gator reared its blunt, mud-covered snout from the underbrush, sniffing the air for prey—Only for a blade to flash behind it in a whisper of wind.

SCHHNK.

The beast dropped with a gurgle, blood spraying in a soft arc as its massive body slumped to the side, its thick neck neatly slashed from behind.

No warning. No roar. Just death.

Jayden appeared like a ghost from thin air, crouched behind the corpse, his new dagger gleaming in the filtered sunlight, still dripping with blood.

He exhaled slowly, visible once more.

"One down."

Then he vanished again.

What followed was a massacre wrapped in shadow.

In the next hour, Jayden became a blur among the trees... an unseen demon with blades of death and steps that made no sound.
