“In the film industry, there really is no worst, only worse,” Zhang Hangnian crossed off a movie, leaning back in his chair, “Writing this review is going to offend people.”
He sighed softly and walked out of the study to get a drink of water.
His wife had gone on a trip with her daughter and brother-in-law’s family, leaving only him and his elderly father at home. Normally, the two of them didn’t cook, and would just make do with something to eat.
In the evening, he was busy watching films and had no appetite. After bringing back food, he’d left it on the table and went upstairs to work, usually his father should be watching TV by this point.
As he walked into the living room, he glanced over and noticed that the takeout was untouched. The lights were off; his father was sitting in front of the television, which seemed to be showing a war movie.
Zhang Hangnian was used to this kind of thing, but not eating was not okay; the stomach of an elderly person couldn’t handle such neglect, and it would be troublesome if he fell ill.
...
Just as he was about to say something, he was captivated by the scene on the TV screen.
A group of soldiers, dressed almost like beggars, were collectively strategizing over a meal of pork and vermicelli stew. Meng Fanle, dragging a lame leg, was holding the stolen vermicelli and giving an impassioned speech.
A group of villagers, faces turned to the yellow earth, watched him expressionlessly, seemingly moved by his words.
The next second, as Meng Fanle turned to hobble away, the vermicelli tucked in his waistband was snatched away, “General, we have no choice either; we need to survive.”
This amused Zhang Hangnian, and he couldn’t help but stand behind the sofa and keep watching. After they had eaten, he casually asked a few questions.
“Dad, why are you skipping meals just to watch TV?”
“Why do you care? You’re not eating either,” the old man replied robustly, and then looked back at the TV, muttering, “Pity there are only two episodes…”
Zhang Hangnian silently noted the name of the show, intending to look it up on his computer later.
The next day.
Yawning, Xu Qingyan walked out of the airport with Shen Jinyue, arriving in Xinyue City. He looked around to get a feel for this rising first-tier city.
“Your dad has moved the whole company to Xinyue now? Has he completely given up on Xinghai?”
“I don’t know, I’m not privy to company matters,” Shen Jinyue replied a bit nervously, clutching her clothes, “It’s so windy today.”
“Xinyue is like this, it’ll be better once we get to the city center,” Xu Qingyan patted her shoulder reassuringly and felt a bit of pity, “Let’s go.”
Shen’s father hadn’t held his birthday banquet at a hotel but instead had arranged a family banquet. Although it was called a family banquet, the Shen family wasn’t exactly flourishing with relatives; most of the guests were business friends.
Realizing this, Shen Jinyue became even more nervous.
She wavered internally over whether to cause a scene at such an event and after deliberating, she shared her concerns with Xu Qingyan, who appeared nonchalant.
“You decide. It’s also fine to meet your dad in private,” he said.
“Okay.”
Initially, Xu Qingyan thought that the Shen family might be living in a villa in a wealthy district. But when they arrived, he discovered it was actually a huge estate.
The car couldn’t enter; they had to switch to a vehicle from within the estate.
As soon as Shen Jinyue arrived, several butler-like figures appeared at the gate, bowing in unison. It was like a scene from a female-lead billionaire romance novel, as they all greeted her loudly.
“Miss.”
Xu Qingyan was startled, looking around like a country bumpkin in the city. In the distance, a security team drove over, not in a shuttle bus, but in a black Rolls-Royce.
Only then did he understand how Shen Jinyue could offer up so much money without batting an eye. Others might be scraping to buy a Porsche Panamera; her divorce settlement was enough to support three generations.
He used to think Shen’s father had left quite a bit to his simple-minded son, but now he realized… the illegitimate child was closer to his heart.
Damn, that’s not fair!
Xu Qingyan was simply bored when he entertained these thoughts, just to pass the time teasingly. In reality, whether Shen’s father was rich or not had nothing to do with him.
His bread and butter were Sky Light Film and Television and a pair of wings. As long as those two things were fine, wealth was just around the corner, and there was certainly no chance of a total collapse overnight.
With a solid foundation and safety net, how could he lose?
Of course, he also owed thanks to Shen Jinyue, the wealthy benefactor. If it weren’t for her financial support, Love Apartment and Home with Kids would have definitely crashed.
It wouldn’t have been a total disaster, but it would have made Sky Light Film and Television bleed heavily.
People should always repay kindness, and Shen Jinyue had come to the rescue so many times it was hard to keep count. Not to mention pretending to be a boyfriend, despite the risk of getting caught and looking bad.
Whenever Shen Jinyue needed it, from B-ultrasound reports of fake pregnancies to pregnancy tests, Xu Qingyan was always able to come through, although Shen Jinyue was somewhat timid.
“I say, your house is really huge.” Xu Qingyan said, sitting in the car and looking out at the mansion through the window, while also glancing at Shen Jinyue’s chest.
He thought to himself, you’re pretty huge too.
What a pity she’s a fool; otherwise, during the time of the reality dating shows, their relationship could have at least been somewhat normal. Once they started hurling insults at each other, it was hard to get back on track.
“This isn’t my home.” Shen Jinyue said, her face tense, and a hint of redness around her eyes.
Hearing this, Xu Qingyan turned his head, thinking to himself, I can’t empathize with you rich folks. Although he felt sorry for her, when he thought about himself, he didn’t find her pitiful at all.
Shen Jinyue was a mess inside, as was Xu Qingyan. He wondered if he would be slapped in the face with a check for several million, sent to make him leave her.
A few million was not enough to make him turn coat; the price would have to go up.
After getting out of the car, the vehicle came to a stop in front of a luxurious mansion.
Shen Jinyue’s brows were tightly furrowed as she waited for Xu Qingyan to catch up. Only then did she say,
“You don’t have to be nervous, it’s okay.”
Xu Qingyan: “???”
“I’m not nervous at all, you… are you crazy?”
Unfortunately, Shen Jinyue didn’t hear these words. She had moved away in a fluster. It seemed she was more nervous than anyone else; it was never easy for a good kid to rebel.
After entering the house, several relatives recognized Shen Jinyue, bombarding her with questions.
“Jinyue, who is this young man beside you?”
“Is this kid starting university, bringing her boyfriend home?”
Realizing what was happening, Shen Jinyue fell two steps behind, waiting for Xu Qingyan to catch up. Hesitating for a moment, she grabbed his arm tightly, and it felt like sinking into a water balloon.
“Why are you walking so slow?” she nagged.
Xu Qingyan glanced at her, understanding that her nagging was just a way to relieve her tension. But he didn’t indulge her and retorted,
“I’m walking slowly, but your tiny legs are like a tractor, you’d think you’re crossing through enemy fire. As if you’re afraid someone will notice what’s going on between us.”
“Nonsense!” Shen Jinyue’s face reddened a bit.
But indeed, her pace slowed, clutching his arm tighter. Perhaps the reading activity from the day before worked, as Shen Jinyue didn’t seem too awkward about the physical contact.
Sometimes boundaries crumble bit by bit like that, and although Xu Qingyan had no designs on her, neither viewed the other seriously.
“You’re pretty soft.” Xu Qingyan commented as they walked together, out of the blue.
By this time, Shen Jinyue was no longer the naive Moon from before, having boned up on many suggestive terms the day prior, like umpteen euphemisms and expressions.
“Hmph, pervert!” Her face flashed red and she gritted her teeth, “Don’t think about taking advantage of me!”
“Oh, then let go of me.” Xu Qingyan said nonchalantly.
“Let go then!” Shen Jinyue claimed defiantly, but she wouldn’t really let go of Xu Qingyan in front of all the relatives, lest all her previous efforts be for naught.
“Let go.”
“You think I’ll let go just because you tell me to? I refuse.” Shen Jinyue stubbornly said, hugging his arm even tighter.
Feeling the soft touch coming from his arm, Xu Qingyan found it hard to stay indifferent, but he quickly adjusted his attitude because… they had reached the door to her father’s study.
At the door of the study on the second floor, Shen Jinyue knocked on the dark wooden door.
“Come in.”
Hearing this, Shen Jinyue’s breath caught, and her heart pounded fiercely. Then she felt a pat on her shoulder and turned her head to see Xu Qingyan’s unconcerned smile. She heard him say,
“Let’s go.”
