Love letters are not allowed in the exorcism notebook!-Chapter 98 Wondrous and Diverse Dark World
The city in the darkness was no different from the Real World, except for the lack of light sources.
Extinguishing the lights, I completely immersed myself in the dark.
I would find that this place wasn’t as deathly quiet as one might imagine.
White fog spread through the streets and alleys like a breathing entity, slowly tumbling and surging in midair.
White giants walked within the fog, their footsteps silent upon impact, almost like illusion made real.
Li Mumu raised her hand, aligning her head with the direction in which the giant was heading, and looked on with eyes wide open.
Having four eyes and two perspectives was a peculiar experience.
On one side was the pitch-black darkness where one couldn’t see their own fingers, and on the other was a city asleep in the darkness, yet not sleeping soundly.
She saw colossal structures in the distance, towering like mountains and stretching from earth to sky.
"That is the prison’s cage, and also the high wall."
"You remember climbing that wall once with Wendy, sitting atop it to admire the world outside."
"Wendy said, beyond the wall, is Hell." 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"And inside the wall, is a relatively less terrible Hell."
"To the east is the wall; to the west is the sea."
"And beyond the sea is..."
"You realize you’ve let your thoughts wander too far."
The giants moved their feet, migrating toward the seaside.
Driven by curiosity, Li Mumu followed them.
The closer they got to the sea, the more the giants shrank. Their bodies, already made of fog, easily compressed from fifty meters to around three.
They walked in midair, seemingly unaware of the tiny ant below their feet.
Li Mumu trailed behind them through the streets and alleys, when suddenly she heard faint human voices coming from ahead.
Following the sound, she saw a group of people in white robes and masks, carrying torches and swords, surrounding a building on the street corner.
Some were crying and shouting, others were smashing things, while those in white stood outside, eerily silent and still.
Amidst the obscured noise, one could hear Chinese being spoken inside. A strong sense of curiosity caused Li Mumu to instinctively stop in her tracks and watch.
"Let go of me! Who on earth are you?"
A middle-aged Chinese man was dragged out of the door and thrown onto the street. Before he could get up, the white-robed people, wrapped tightly in clothes with only their eyes visible, converged around him, enclosing him in their midst.
The leader held up a Bible above his head and declared in a deep voice, "You are guilty!"
"What crime have I committed? How have I wronged you?"
The man seemed confused, shouting defiantly, "If I’m guilty, have the police arrest me, sue me in court, who are you to say I’m guilty? Dragging me out of my house in the dead of night... You are the criminals!"
"The Lord says, you are guilty!"
The leader in white raised his voice and repeated, "Do you acknowledge your sin?"
"When did the Lord ever say that, it was clearly you who said it..."
The man wanted to argue further, but just then, someone from behind took out a rope, putting it around his neck and pulling it tight.
"You are guilty!"
The leader in white declared loudly, "Greedy yellow dog, you deserve to be hanged!"
"Hang him!"
They dragged the middle-aged man by the rope around his neck, pulled him all the way to the roadside. Someone quickly grabbed one end of the rope and agilely scaled a lamppost.
Then, as he glanced around inadvertently, he noticed the young girl standing afar, watching the commotion.
He screamed and fell down.
"Ghost Lady! There’s the Ghost Lady!"
The group of people in white looked in the direction he was pointing, and a commotion immediately erupted within the ranks that had previously maintained a composed and silent atmosphere.
How can you call someone a Ghost Lady? It’s not like I have an extra pair of hands... okay, maybe I do, but I mean no harm, look how deliciously I’m eating this melon...
As soon as Li Mumu raised her hand, the group of eerie and terrifying people in white burst into shrill screams and scattered in all directions.
Contrasting with the reactions of those people, the middle-aged Chinese man who had almost been hung from a street lamp saw Li Mumu holding a human head in the distance and was overjoyed as if he had seen a family member. He took off the rope, knelt on the ground, and kowtowed three times with loud thuds.
"Thank you, Bodhisattva, for your blessing! Thank you, Bodhisattva, for your blessing..."
Mumbling thanks to the Bodhisattva, under Li Mumu’s silent gaze, the man’s body gradually turned to ashes and dispersed into the night.
Um... how should I put it?
I think your reactions are all a bit abnormal.
Li Mumu had actually been expecting a gold or a blue exclamation or question mark to appear above the man’s head.
But perhaps because she was overly cautious and did not actively engage, she might have missed a hidden side quest.
This can’t be blamed on me; it’s my first time here, and I don’t have an instruction manual.
God knows what kind of play you all are into?
However, I can’t say that it has been completely fruitless.
At least Li Mumu has come to understand that this dark city is not devoid of people.
There are indescribable monsters, as well as living humans, who seem to be capable of communication.
This is a good thing.
Where there are monsters, there are treasure chests.
It’s just a pity that she’s about to leave the hidden map of Newbie Village. If she had more time, Li Mumu really wouldn’t mind thoroughly exploring this place.
The full moon night only lasts a few days; missing this time frame means waiting until next month to enter this world again.
She can’t wait that long.
Just as Li Mumu was about to turn and leave, continuing to follow the giant’s footsteps, she inadvertently caught sight of a blood-red color in the darkness.
Right where the middle-aged man had disappeared, a fresh Manjushahua flower quietly bloomed.
Even in this lightless night, the heavy curtains of darkness could not conceal the blood-like bright red, reflecting in the pupils of Li Mumu’s eyes.
A sigh that seemed filled with sorrow and complaint faintly echoed in her ears.
Li Mumu lifted her head and looked around, but she didn’t notice any other abnormalities.
When she came back to her senses, even the Manjushahua had vanished.
It seemed to be just a meaningless illusion.
What she didn’t realize was that the pupil of her right eye had turned into blood-red, thread-like petals.
It was as if an enigmatic will was urging her to quicken her pace and catch up with those giants.
After crossing several streets, Li Mumu didn’t encounter any random side quests that unexpectedly popped up, but as she faced the wind, she smelled the briny scent of seawater.
Not far ahead was the harborside.
The bodies of the giants had shrunk to nearly the same size as ordinary people. They put on suits, carried suitcases in their hands, and lined up in a long queue in front of the docks, looking just like regular travelers.
Li Mumu looked up, her gaze piercing through the veil of darkness, to see the vast object docked by the wharf.
It was a ship, a massive ocean liner so huge it seemed it could carry a small town.
The name engraved on its bow was "Olympus."
