Chapter 137: Chapter 138 An Offer You Can’t Refuse

(Don’t mind the order of Chapters; the content has been adjusted, leftover issues from the erroneous upload of Chapter 137.)

It’s impossible for a person to live their entire life in a sterilized environment. In fact, apart from the few hours you spend being wheeled into an operating room, you probably can’t enjoy the benefits of a germ-free environment at all.

The reason human bodies can resist bacterial infections, aside from maintaining personal hygiene, is most importantly through physical exercise to enhance one’s immune system.

Garrison Soldiers have an extremely high resistance to Knowledge Contamination and Echo Erosion, a kind of resistance akin to an immune system.

It’s not that pollution and erosion don’t exist, but that Garrison Soldiers have a stronger immunity than others.

However, this resistance, if relied upon solely by one’s bodily senses, is very difficult to detect, and as such, it’s easy to underestimate and be careless about it.

If it hadn’t been for the reminder in the notebook, Wang Yunxiao wouldn’t have known that he’d been marked twice just by visiting the air-raid shelter.

The incident with killing the dog was understandable; the dog was truly dead, and if its owner had the guts to seek revenge, Wang Yunxiao wasn’t scared of him.

But what the hell is this Faceless One?

Did I offend you in some way?

Without showing any signs of disturbance, Wang Yunxiao returned to the cafeteria and slid the notebook in front of Youtiao.

Youtiao glanced at it and said puzzled, "Wasn’t this book supposed to be a Dragon-Seeking Ruler, used for treasure hunting? How does it have this function too?"

"Who knows..."

Wang Yunxiao casually replied while his eyes swept over the people present.

They were all his brothers and sisters, familiar to the point where they couldn’t be anymore familiar. If someone had switched places with them, he would definitely have noticed.

But the problem was that he didn’t understand what the Faceless One was exactly or what sorts of abilities they possessed.

If the description in the notebook was correct, then it means the enemy hadn’t had the chance to make a move yet.

Was it because it was currently noon and broad daylight was not conducive for them to act?

From his last encounter with the Demon, it could be deduced that as long as these demons and evil spirits avoided direct sunlight, whether by wearing a set of clothes or hiding within someone else’s body, they were still able to move around normally under the sun.

However, once they wanted to perform Sorcery, they would become exposed under the sunlight.

Wang Yunxiao gave Youtiao a meaningful glance, and understanding the signal, Youtiao passed the notebook to Guozi, who was silently eating next to him.

Guozi only glanced at it briefly, didn’t say a word, and then pushed it over to Dumpling.

As the notebook was passed from one person to the next, by the time Chen Yan and Little Gourd had finished reading it, nearly everyone had finished their meal. Wang Yunxiao gathered up the notebook, stretched lazily, yawned ostentatiously, and deliberately said aloud, "Alright, I think Director Qin probably doesn’t need us anymore. We’ll take a brief break and then head out."

Chen Yan nodded and said, "Don’t take a break. We won’t make it back in time for the first afternoon class if we don’t leave now."

This was her first time acting with everyone, and her expression was still a bit stiff, not quite natural.

Youtiao, picking his teeth, casually retorted, "You won’t make it back for the first class even if you leave now, what’s the hurry? I say we should skip class this afternoon and find somewhere to take a bath. I sweated all over wearing that leather coat, and now I’m feeling all greasy."

Chen Yan immediately became annoyed and said, "You want to skip class?"

Pinching his nose, Youtiao teased, "Look at you, don’t you smell yourself? How could such a clean girl neglect hygiene like that, tsk tsk..."

Blushing with embarrassment, Chen Yan stamped her foot, grabbed Little Gourd, and turned to leave.

As the two of them stood up to leave, the others couldn’t sit still either and promptly got up to follow.

Wang Yunxiao and Youtiao were still at the back, as the group left the police station in twos and threes, scattering and heading in the direction of the school.

They had hardly taken two steps out the door when they heard someone nearby call out, "Wang Yunxiao!" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Wang Yunxiao turned around and saw, "Officer Zhang? You’re back too?"

The newcomer was indeed Zhang Meng, who had just been at the scene collecting evidence. He came over with a smile, "The Special Service Bureau already sent people and took over the scene. I came back to get some stuff. Are you all heading back now?"

Wang Yunxiao nodded, "Yes, since the Special Service Bureau came, there’s nothing more for us to do. We’re going to find a place to take a bath, get some sleep, and relax a bit."

Zhang Meng furrowed his brows and raised his hand to pat Wang Yunxiao on the shoulder, "You’re a strong young man, how can you be so tired after just one trip to the underground tunnel? Is your body a bit weak?"

With what seemed like a casual pat, a deep fatigue surged in Wang Yunxiao’s heart, and his mind began to cloud as if he were about to close his eyes and fall asleep at any moment. He didn’t quite catch what Zhang Meng said afterwards, only vaguely acknowledging with a couple of murmurs.

Zhang Meng was about to say more when he saw the people who had walked off into the distance returning, subtly forming an encircling ring around him, Wang Yunxiao, and Youtiao.

As the group came together, Wang Yunxiao’s eyes instantly regained clarity, and when he looked at Zhang Meng again, his expression had darkened.

Zhang Meng, unfazed, smiled, "What’s wrong?"

Wang Yunxiao stared at him and asked, "Officer Zhang, your accent doesn’t sound local. Where is your hometown?"

Zhang Meng replied uncertainly, "My hometown is in Jizhou. Why do you ask?"

"Jizhou is large, where exactly?"

"Shimen."

"How long does it take by train from Shimen to Tianmen?"

Zhang Meng stopped talking, and as Wang Yunxiao pressed him, he couldn’t help but reply angrily, "Why are you asking so much? Are you checking household registrations? Am I the police, or are you the police?"

Before he finished speaking, Wang Yunxiao had already made a move, stepping forward quickly, grabbing his collar, and landing a punch right to his eye socket.

"Hey, what are you doing? You’re hitting people now!"

Taken completely by surprise, Zhang Meng was struck by the punch until stars appeared before his eyes, crying out about being hit, while his facial features twisted involuntarily.

Of course, this was not because Wang Yunxiao’s punch had the miraculous effect of cosmetic surgery, but rather because Little Gourd was quickly writing characters from behind.

Under the sunlight shining overhead, Zhang Meng’s face began to melt away like a burning candle, emitting wisps of black smoke. He suddenly lifted his hand, pulled out the gun from his waist, and pointed it at the very close Wang Yunxiao.

However, Wang Yunxiao was ready. As Zhang Meng drew his gun, Wang Yunxiao quickly lifted his arm upward, and with a "bang," the bullet flew into the air.

Guozi stood silently to the side, and while Wang Yunxiao was struggling with the gun, he grabbed Zhang Meng’s other arm, twisted it outwards, pinning it behind his back, while tripping him, causing him to lose balance and kneel on the ground.

The crowd rushed forward and pinned him down altogether.

More black smoke billowed from Zhang Meng’s face as he let out inhuman roars and howls, desperately trying to struggle to his feet. But the men under Wang Yunxiao were relentless and hard-hearted; they certainly wouldn’t be gentle with him on account of his identity. With seven or eight people holding his feet and hands, unless he transformed into the Hulk on the spot, there was no chance he could stand up.

"Wang Yunxiao! You’re really screwing me over..."

Zhang Meng seemed to realize only then that he had fallen into their trap from the very start.

The Garrison Soldiers formed an array, and when they came together, he was at a loss. Watching the group disperse, he thought it was a good opportunity, not realizing it was a deliberate ploy by the others.

Yet, he never figured out where he had slipped up.
