Chapter 80: Dohwi’s First Prey

“Go ahead and change. Those pesky herons loitering around the plum trees are bothering me quite a bit. It’s irritating.”

“Yes, madam, as you wish.”

At her command, thick black fur sprouted along Woongsik’s burly arms, and in an instant, he transformed into his bear form.

Standing tall at over seven feet, he was a massive, imposing creature.

Sohwa looked up at him with satisfaction before swiftly hopping onto his shoulder.

“Be careful, madam.”

Because Woongsik had once ruled as the second-in-command of Mount Taeryong, he couldn’t help but feel a bit dissatisfied at first, realizing that from now on, he had to trail behind a fox no bigger than a chestnut.

Yet, the more he served her, the more he got consumed by the overwhelming cuteness of the lovely little fox.

Now, even as she climbed atop his head, Woongsik felt nothing else but a sense of deep gratitude.

“Can you see well, madam?” freeweɓnøvel.com

“Yes, I can see just fine.”

“Hold on tight to my ears so you don’t fall. It’s a long way down, and you might get hurt.”

“Hmph, it’s not that tall. Back in my youth, I used to climb trees over a thousand feet tall.”

Even if all the braggarts in the world gathered, none would come close to matching this fox’s fairy tales.

The notion of her climbing a tree taller than a thousand feet was utterly laughable, given she couldn’t even hang onto a branch.

Woongsik chuckled as they continued down the path, but then, Sohwa spoke out of the blue.

“When I wasn’t around, how was Dohwi?”

“Pardon? I’m not sure I understand what you are saying, madam....”

“Oh, come on now. I know very well that the fearsome tiger who ruled these lands was none other than Dohwi.”

“....”

So, she had figured it out after all. Of course she would—there’s no way she wouldn’t notice eventually. The saying ‘a cunning fox’ existed for a reason.

Sohwa was indeed an exceptional silver fox. In Woongsik’s eyes, she was the cleverest fox of them all—one who pretended to be oblivious but could control the tiger with ease.

“He lived... Freely... as you might expect.”

As a servant, Woongsik couldn’t bring himself to fully reveal Dohwi’s violent ways—how he terrorized other beasts of the mountain and ruled over them like a god.

“Was he happier back then?”

“Oh, not at all, madam.”

To the ordinary creatures of Mount Taeryong, Sohwa was a beacon of light.

Thanks to her, Dohwi no longer slaughtered animals on a whim and even protected the smaller, weaker creatures at her request.

“I feel sorry for Dohwi, having ended up with such an ordinary, trivial creature like me.”

Woongsik thought back to the days when Sohwa wasn’t around. And then, shaking his head, he said,

“Oh no, please don’t say such things.”

After hesitating for a moment, Woongsik finally opened up about Dohwi’s true nature from those days, something he had never shared with anyone.

“Back then... Master Dohwi was a lonely soul.”

“Was he really?”

“Yes, but now he seems very happy. All thanks to you, madam.”

At that moment, Sohwa, who had been lazily draped over Woongsik’s head, suddenly sprang up.

“What is it, madam?”

Woongsik saw her silhouette as she lifted her long snout into the air.

And then—

Sniff... sniff, sniff.

After a few quick sniffs, her eyes sparkled. She leaped off Woongsik’s head in a flash.

“Dohwi! Dohwi!”

“Madam! Be careful!”

Before Woongsik could catch her, Sohwa had already disappeared, sprinting down the path in a zigzag, swiftly vanishing into the distance.

‘How can she move so fast!’

Woongsik was amazed. She was practically flying—only the wings were missing.

He scanned the surroundings in disbelief, but all he heard was her faint, joyful laugh echoing from far away.

‘My lady can use teleportation?! If only she can fully use her speed when hunting! What a shame.’

Huffing as he hurried after her, Woongsik finally caught sight of them in the distance—Dohwi and Sohwa, darting around like a playful fox.

She was so excited to see her husband, even though they had only been apart for the night.

Giggling, she climbed trees, jumped down, and ran circles around him. Then, she clambered up onto his shoulder to shower him with kisses and licks.

‘How happy Master Dohwi must be to come home to a wife who welcomes him like this.’

Watching the couple’s playful reunion, Woongsik felt a pang of loneliness in his chest. Quietly turning away, he resolved that this winter, he would finally find a mate of his own.

One peaceful early evening, Sohwa lay with her head resting on Dohwi’s lap, idly enjoying the moment.

“Now that the children have left the nest, life feels so relaxed and easy. I don’t even know why I made such a fuss about wanting a baby.”

Dohwi let out a quiet snort. She was only saying that because it was in the middle of summer.
