Living Only For Myself: Make Those Who Hate Me Regret It-Chapter 97 - 96: "Then Don’t You Regret It.
Xu Su struggled to pull her hand free, blurting out in a panic, "Don’t touch me! Doesn’t it make you uncomfortable?"
’Damn it, what kind of wild thing was that to say!’
Blushing furiously, Xu Su quickly tried to recover. "My legs are really itchy. Hurry up and take me back, I need to put on some ointment."
This time, Zhou Mochen was silent for a few seconds before he spoke with a light chuckle, "It is pretty uncomfortable."
Afraid she would fly into a rage from embarrassment, he didn’t press the issue. He looked down at the large welts on Xu Su’s leg. Perhaps from her recent scratching, they looked even worse after just a short while.
Zhou Mochen’s smile vanished in an instant. "Alright, I’ll take you back. This is my fault today, letting you get bitten by mosquitoes this badly. I’ll come pick you up at the Kang County Bus Station on the fifteenth."
He steered with one hand while holding out the other. "Hold this. I’ll take you home."
"..." Xu Su was so amused by his blunt words that she laughed, completely ignoring him.
He helplessly pulled his hand back. "Fine, if you don’t want to hold it, you don’t have to."
When she got out of the car, Xu Su made a point to check the time—12:30 AM. She said, "Drive safe tonight, Zhou Mochen. And stop being so erratic in the future."
Seeing her concern for him, Zhou Mochen’s eyes curved into a smile. He reminded her, "Hurry back inside. Don’t get bitten by any more mosquitoes. I’ll text you when I get to Chang City, so don’t worry about me."
After that night, for the remaining week of the break, Zhou Mochen indeed didn’t show up again.
He just texted frequently, and Xu Su would reply to one every now and then.
Aside from Zhou Mochen, the person Xu Su was in contact with most over the past half-month was Huang Feng. The girl would call her from time to time to chat about where she’d gone for vacation and what tutoring classes she was taking.
She’d talk about which classmates were in her tutoring classes, and which kids from other schools, and so on.
Qian Jia didn’t have a cell phone, and her family didn’t have a landline installed, so Xu Su and Huang Feng couldn’t get in touch with her all summer.
Whenever there was any gossip, Huang Feng would share it with Xu Su immediately.
According to Huang Feng, the biggest piece of gossip still belonged to Xu Su and Xi Zirong.
After all, Xi Zirong’s reputation was immense; he was a famous figure in all the major high schools.
The title of "Study God" wasn’t just known within City No.1 High School.
The fact that he was pursuing a girl so openly was not only common knowledge at City No.1 High School, but was also widely known at other schools.
Thanks to him, Xu Su’s name was also frequently a topic of discussion among students from other schools.
They were all extremely curious about what this First High School beauty actually looked like...
Xu Su: "..."
On the other end of the line, Huang Feng was still chattering away. "They all know we’re close, so they came asking me if I have any pictures of you. It’s such a shame we don’t have any photos together. When should the three of us go take some photo booth pictures?"
Xu Su had a habit of being very accommodating with her good friends. She said, "Okay, just let me know whenever you’re free."
Huang Feng chuckled and asked, "Susu, are you having fun in the countryside?"
"It’s alright. I feel like my days are pretty full."
Huang Feng had lived in Chang City her whole life and had never been to the countryside, so she was a little wistful. "If I’d known, I would have just gone with you to your grandma’s for summer break. If school didn’t start in two days, I’d come find you right now."
Xu Su laughed and replied, "Well, you can come back with me and stay for a few days next summer break."
"We’ll be seniors next year. We might not even get a summer break." Huang Feng sighed, then immediately switched back to gossip mode. "Has God Xi contacted you during the break? He likes you so much, he wouldn’t actually follow you to the countryside, would he?"
"..." ’What nonsense.’
’Then again,’ Xu Su thought, ’Zhou Mochen *did* follow me to the countryside...’
Xu Su said, "He doesn’t know where my grandma lives, so how could he follow me? We’ve been in touch occasionally during the break."
They had indeed been in touch occasionally. Xi Zirong didn’t call frequently, maybe once every two or three days.
They just talked about everyday things, like normal classmates would. It was nowhere near as dramatic as Huang Feng imagined.
Speaking of landlines, Xu Su’s eldest uncle’s family was also planning to get one installed.
The main reason was that their eldest son, Chen Le, was working in Peng City, and it would be more convenient for him to contact the family.
Vacations always seem to fly by. On July fifteenth, the sun was shining brightly.
After lunch, Xu Su slung the school bag she had brought with her over her shoulder, carried a bag of luggage, and boarded the bus to Kang County.
This time, she didn’t bring any bags of vegetables or eggs. It wasn’t because it was a hassle, but because she remembered the disdain for the countryside that was always present in Chen Shulan’s and Xu Yang’s words. She felt they didn’t deserve to eat the vegetables her grandmother had grown herself.
Much less the eggs laid by free-range farm chickens.
On the bus, the texts didn’t stop. They were all from Zhou Mochen.
The bus slowed down as it pulled into the station. Xu Su looked out the window and immediately spotted Zhou Mochen’s car parked outside. He was clearly already waiting for her at the Kang County Bus Station.
Her phone vibrated, and Xu Su answered it.
Zhou Mochen asked, "See me yet?"
"..." Xu Su paused. "I see you. Coming out now."
When she got in the car, fine beads of sweat had formed on Xu Su’s forehead.
He handed her a box of tissues. "Wipe your sweat. Want to grab a bite with me? I rushed over to pick you up and haven’t even had lunch."
’He’s getting better and better at playing the pity card...’
Xu Su wiped her sweat, her mind racing.
’It’s 1:30 PM now. It would take him at least two or three hours to get here from Chang City, so he probably is telling the truth about not having eaten.’
Xu Su said, "This little county of ours doesn’t have any restaurants you’d approve of."
Zhou Mochen laughed. "Do you have some kind of misunderstanding about me? Xu Su, I’m not picky about where I eat. Kang County is your turf. I’ll eat whatever you tell me to eat, how about that?"
"..." ’If I hadn’t seen what a clean freak you are, I might have actually believed you.’
Xu Su thought for a moment, then gave a mischievous smile. "Then don’t you regret it."
She directed him the whole way, finally telling Zhou Mochen to stop at a malatang place not far from the entrance of Kang County First Middle School.
This was a malatang shop that didn’t even have a name. It was cheap and deeply loved by the students nearby.
Including Xu Su.
She hadn’t eaten it in a year. Even though she had just had lunch, if it was malatang, she could still manage some more.
Zhou Mochen looked at the grimy little hole-in-the-wall in front of him, its entrance dark and dingy, and for once, he hesitated.
Xu Su grabbed him without a second thought. "Too late to back out now, Zhou Mochen. You’re eating whether you want to or not."
Potato slices, cilantro, rice cakes, beef balls, crystal noodles, tofu skin, baby napa cabbage, sweet potato vermicelli, chicken strips, cauliflower.
Xu Su filled a large bowl to the brim for Zhou Mochen, then picked out just a few items for herself.
Looking at Zhou Mochen’s somewhat silent face, Xu Su said, "I already ate at home. I’m only eating this to keep you company."
’See? Aren’t I the best~’
As she spoke, she added chili sauce and vinegar to Zhou Mochen’s bowl, smiling sweetly. "This shop’s chili is wicked strong. Paired with the vinegar, the flavor is to die for. Go on, eat."
Zhou Mochen looked down at the bowl, now covered in a thick layer of red oil, and slowly unwrapped the disposable chopsticks.
