Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 93: Board-Like Hide
Seeing Lu Ke’s face full of craving, Xu Yi couldn’t help but laugh.
"Alright, tomorrow we’ll go to the beach and bring back some salt along the way. The filtering cup should be ready to fire, so we can filter the sea salt." Xu Yi said while taking off his jacket.
"Wow, Xu Yi’s physique is getting better and better."
"A bit more manly, definitely nice."
"Speaking of physique, our Loli Ke seems to be showing a bit of womanly grace too."
"No way, she’s still very loli, still very wealthy."
"The one above, I suspect you’re making a dirty joke."
"I just like Loli Ke’s foodie look, girls who love to eat generally don’t have bad luck."
"Isn’t it girls who love to smile that have good luck? Why has it become loving to eat? Girl, are you perhaps a fatty?"
"Finally waited for the rain to stop. They might not have realized it, but after watching so many days of rain, I felt like I was getting depressed."
"This rain has eliminated too many people, it should have stopped long ago."
Lu Ke felt that after the rain stopped, her appetite got better, and she ate a bit more wolf meat.
After eating her fill, Lu Ke brewed some mint tea.
Today, Xu Yi dug a cesspool and was soaking in the water for half a day, she was a bit worried Xu Yi would catch a cold because of it.
"Xu Yi, your pants are dirty, take them off and let me wash them." As she spoke, Lu Ke handed Xu Yi a bowl of hot tea.
"No need, I’ll wash them myself later." Xu Yi was too embarrassed to let Lu Ke wash them; he could do it himself.
"Let me wash them, you have other things to do, don’t waste your time on this." Saying this, Lu Ke picked up Xu Yi’s clothes.
"Don’t be shy, take them off." Lu Ke winked at Xu Yi, after all, Xu Yi was still wearing underwear inside.
Seeing Lu Ke insist, Xu Yi could only take off his pants and hand them to Lu Ke.
He did have other things to do, there was still some wood in the yard that could be used to make stools.
After he set the wood on the sawhorse, Xu Yi started sawing it with a machete.
This piece of wood was rather sturdy, specifically found by Xu Yi for making stools.
After sawing off a section, Xu Yi split the wood with his machete.
After busily chopping and shaving for a while, Xu Yi obtained some rather thick planks.
After chiseling four rectangular small holes on it, he could install the stool legs.
Xu Yi had a dagger, though not as useful as a chisel, it could still carve holes that met his requirements.
It’s just, it’s more time-consuming this way.
Over there, Lu Ke spent half an hour to wash Xu Yi’s clothes and pants clean, then brought them by the fire to dry.
"Xu Yi, are you making a stool?" Lu Ke saw some clues and casually asked.
After all, it was quite obvious what Xu Yi was doing.
"Yes, the table’s been done for so many days, but there’s no stool, always having to stand is very inconvenient." Xu Yi said as he continued chiseling the holes.
Had it not been for the rain all these days, the stool should have been done by now.
"Oh right, the sheepskin should be ready to take down." Xu Yi raised his head and said to Lu Ke, that sheepskin could be used as a small blanket, making sleep more comfortable.
"Okay, I’ll go take a look." Lu Ke walked into the house, the furs were all hung to dry inside the house.
There was also a small fire inside, so they could still see the situation in the room.
Lu Ke first glanced at the rabbits, the little bunnies were born several days now and already had some fluff.
Additionally, Lu Ke checked the eggs to see if the mother rabbit had cracked them.
"I also don’t know if you can hatch out." Lu Ke touched the eggs, then muttered to herself.
She felt that chicken tasted better than sheep and wolf meat, especially for soup, which was aromatic and sweet, not getting tired of it even with frequent consumption.
After checking, Lu Ke took the sheepskin down from the tripod.
Then, she felt like she was holding a piece of wood instead of fur.
The whole hide was stiff, the hair dry and hard, completely different from what she imagined.
"Xu Yi, this hide is too hard!" Lu Ke took out the hide, feeling that hitting someone with it would be quite painful.
"This is rawhide, it’s like this if it’s not tanned." Xu Yi glanced at the rawhide Lu Ke held and laughed.
"So how should it be treated?" Lu Ke, hearing Xu Yi say this, knew he must know some method.
"Generally, it’s done using the oil tanning method or smoking method. If we find alkaline soil, we can tan it with that." Xu Yi explained, though he only knew these basic methods, not familiar with modern techniques.
"Sounds complicated, and we don’t have much oil now, using it for tanning hides wouldn’t be worth it, right?" Lu Ke looked at Xu Yi, puffing her cheeks.
"So now we can use the smoking method, smoke it and then rub it with wood ash to get relatively soft leather." Xu Yi explained.
"Do we need to smoke it with heavy smoke?" That way, it’d be too smoky for people.
"We probably do, otherwise grilling it ourselves wouldn’t count as smoking." Xu Yi hadn’t done it before either, nor seen others do it, just read descriptions, and even those weren’t detailed.
"Then I’ll try it tomorrow. I’ll go check if the Pottery has been fired." Now, the yard didn’t have much firewood with leaves, so not a lot of smoke could be made.
"Alright, since the weather is still quite warm, we can take our time figuring it out." Saying this, Xu Yi continued focusing on chiseling his wood holes.
Lu Ke leaned the wood-like rawhide against the wall, then headed towards the earth kiln.
Touching the outside temperature of the earth kiln, it was already very cool.
Thus, she removed a few Pottery slabs on top and reached inside.
"Need help?" Xu Yi heard Lu Ke moving the Pottery slabs and offered his help.
"Mm, pass the fire over, it’s a bit hard to see." As she spoke, Lu Ke had already brought out a Pottery jar.
So, Xu Yi took a burning stick from the fire and went to the side of the earth kiln.
With the torch, Lu Ke could see the inside of the earth kiln clearly.
This time she fired 4 Pottery jars, two Pottery pots, and some plates and cups.
While she was taking out these items, Xu Yi started a small fire pile beside the earth kiln.
After all, it was necessary to check if these Pottery had any cracks, relying only on the brightness of a small stick wasn’t enough.
"A cup and a plate cracked, the rest are intact, just not sure if there are any cracks." After taking out everything, Lu Ke told Xu Yi.
