Chapter 119: Chapter 119: The Oil Lamp Is Lit

After enjoying a hearty dinner, Xu Yi moved the chair closer to the house and helped Lu Ke set up the bed.

Although the bedboard wasn’t very smooth, it was still a bed nonetheless.

"If only we had bamboo, a bed made of bamboo would be more comfortable," Xu Yi said as he sat on the bed.

"We do have palm trees, though. We can make a palm mat," Lu Ke recalled Xu Yi mentioning making a palm mat and suggested.

On their last trip to carve a new path to the sea, they discovered palm trees.

But since that trip was for collecting salt, they didn’t peel the palm bark to bring back.

Now that the bed’s position has been raised, they could start making the palm mat.

"Yes, indeed, a palm mat would make sleeping more comfortable." Xu Yi nodded, thinking it was indeed something they could work on.

The two of them left the house and returned to the yard.

"The pottery in the earthen kiln should be ready, let’s take it out and have a look," Lu Ke said, walking towards the kiln while Xu Yi followed with a burning stick.

This batch of pottery consisted of small items, mainly lamps, cups, pottery plates, and even a hot pot.

"Oh, one of the lamps cracked," Lu Ke said upon finding the first one taken out already broken.

"The success rate was only sixty to seventy percent; it’s impossible to succeed a hundred percent," Xu Yi comforted, knowing Lu Ke had achieved quite a high success rate before.

Then, Lu Ke took out the remaining pottery items.

Two lamps, a plate, and a cup were cracked. The rest seemed to have no issues for the time being.

Even with so many failures, Lu Ke felt a bit frustrated.

"Heat the oil; I’ll go get some cotton, and we’ll set up the oil lamps," said Xu Yi, taking the stick inside to grab some cotton.

Although two lamps were damaged, there were still four left. So, Xu Yi and Lu Ke twisted out four wicks.

Then, Xu Yi poured oil into the lamps.

"Xu Yi, will it work?" Lu Ke asked with some anticipation, thinking that having oil lamps would indeed be more convenient. Especially at night, when going to the bathroom, they wouldn’t need to carry a burning stick.

"It should work fine," Xu Yi said, lighting the wick with a burning branch.

"It’s lit! Fantastic." Lu Ke clapped her hands joyfully, surprised they could really light the lamps they made.

"It’s a success," Xu Yi grinned, then lit the remaining three lamps.

"Two in the house and two in the bathroom," Xu Yi said, picking up a nearby wooden stake.

The stake, one long and one short, can be driven into the ground, creating positions of different heights for the lamps.

Xu Yi first nailed two inside the house and then placed the lamps on top.

The originally dark room brightened up significantly, no longer pitch-black.

"It’s quite bright, much more convenient now," Lu Ke said happily.

"Let’s go and set up the bathroom lamps so you won’t have to shower in the dark at night." With that, Xu Yi walked out of the house, taking the stake to the bathroom.

Since the bathroom was relatively small, it seemed even brighter.

"It’s starting to look right, not bad," Xu Yi said with satisfaction as he glanced at the bathroom, feeling like something was still missing.

A shelf, the bathroom needed a shelf.

After stepping outside, Lu Ke went to the bathroom and didn’t come out until after a while.

By the fire, Xu Yi was peeling flax fibers.

After all, they brought back quite a bit of flax today, and Xu Yi had nothing else to do, so he chose to peel fibers.

When Lu Ke returned, she continued making a pottery jar.

At this time, Wang Jin and Lu Yao were just getting back to their camp.

Wang Jin’s stamina was still limited; during the return trip, they had rested for over an hour.

However, even so, Lu Yao was quite surprised.

Not only did they gain the carcass of a Steel-Clawed Earth Wolf, but they also discovered their own capabilities. This was more meaningful than bringing back the wolf itself.

"Sis, we made it back to camp with all this meat. Ha, who would have thought I, Wang Jin, would have such an impressive day!" Wang Jin said, boasting a little.

"Indeed, very impressive. I’m surprised too," Lu Yao said, putting down the torch, intending to start a fire to cook dinner, while also skinning and butchering the two Steel-Clawed Earth Wolves.

"Sis, you handle the butchering, and I’ll stew the pork." Wang Jin knew there was much work to do, so handed Lu Yao two pieces of jerky, taking one for herself to chew on.

"Fix the fur first since it’s been out for so long," Lu Yao said, taking out a piece of somewhat hard leather from her basket.

Wang Jin started chopping the pig leg with an axe, surprised at how easily she could wield the axe and chop the pig leg into small pieces.

The pot was too small to hold much meat, so they had to cook it in several batches.

"Sis, we should make pottery too; I saw Xu Yi and Lu Ke have quite a lot," Wang Jin said, tending the fire under the earth stove as she cooked the pig legs.

"Yes, but I haven’t found suitable clay. We can try regular soil tomorrow," Lu Yao replied. Though she knew how to make pottery, they hadn’t started due to a lack of suitable clay and because they had coconut shells for bowls, making pottery less necessary.

"Yeah, we can’t live worse than others," Wang Jin said with determination after visiting Xu Yi and Lu Ke’s camp, which had motivated her a bit.

In her bones, Wang Jin was competitive, which made her good at games.

She felt she couldn’t just laze around and depend entirely on Lu Yao. If she could bring back a Steel-Clawed Earth Wolf, she could handle other tough jobs too.

Lu Yao said nothing but nodded silently.

Life should be a bit more comfortable.

Surviving in the wilderness, you can’t lack ambition.

After handling the fur, Lu Yao began dressing the Clawed Earth Wolf.

First, she chopped off the wolf’s claws. These could serve as knives, being better than stone knives.

Then she needed to cut open its belly to remove the innards. It had been over half a day and should be done quickly.

Wang Jin also offered to help, knowing they had to cut all the meat tonight and hang it up to smoke; otherwise, it would spoil.

If that happened, all their hard work would have been for nothing.
