Limitless The Strongest Revenant-Chapter 912: Can’t be real [1/2]
Zanele's stories drove home the differences between humans and Reapers. This woman lived for more than a hundred years. And she used up a century still waiting for her lover.
During that entire time, they did little and just waited. Whether it was just her or the Elders around her, they had no sense of urgency. Somehow, they reminded me of the elves in anime and manga.
Normally, those races had extremely long lives. And because of such a reality, they lived their days at a relaxed pace. It was often a common trope of them seeing humans as brash, hasty, and overeager little shits. And who could blame them?
If you lived in a place that never changed, you were bound to not even notice the passage of time. The main drivers of that were children and pets. Ten years felt significantly different to them than to adults. Still. While I understood Zanele, I found it lazy as fuck.
While I couldn't speak for Africa, I knew that in North America, the tax system would compel her to take action. Isolde was only to bear the brunt of the tax because she sold her {fates} for souls. Without such taxes in place, you tolerate lazy shits like the Soldats.
'I can forgive Zanele herself as she is the Revenant's woman, but what about the elders?'
I felt old. I was chastising the way of life of another group of people, and what I saw infuriated me. Maybe this was why Africa was so poor. Unlike North America, which forced its Reapers to fight or make money, they stagnated.
Zanele took a moment to wipe her tears before she continued.
"I apologize, everyone. It's a hard topic for me. Huff! I'm okay now. Going back to what I was saying. As you may all know, the Revenant of a continent has to deal with the malice of his kingdom. So, should the Revenant weaken, the demons will notice.
"When they do, such as in our case, they assault Earth through the cracks. Our warriors do fight them, but the longer it goes on, the more holes there will be. Until the barrier between Hell and Earth completely breaks."
"Excuse me? What do you mean the barrier breaks?!" I asked in confusion.
"Ah, it is just as I said. The demons behave like water. Normally, a Revenant locks down his kingdom in an airtight manner. This forces the demons to attack through the only opening they can find, which is Hellsgate. But once the gaps appear, they exploit them."
"Wait. This is the first time I have heard of this! Didn't the Reign of Seven Kings only recently begin? What happened while that wasn't the case?"
"…"
Zanele said nothing. So did my girls. The one who answered me was Mia.
"What did you think, Limitless? Beings from Hellsgate came out and began slaughtering humans."
"W-What?"
"Come now, you wanker. You should understand it instinctively. Every monster and every horror story you know of. Chances are they based their ideas on actual things that happened. From ghost possession, entire cities being purged, massacres, and all that," she continued.
Jo then pulled my hand. She added, "Darling, Europe has many myths and religions not due to our wild imaginations. It was because we recorded what we saw to prepare future generations for the fights."
"Shujin, Asia did the same thing. Most of the horrible stories were actually disguised as tragedies. But the number one cause of such atrocities was something that made it out. And to protect the humans, we fabricated lies," Aki further explained.
"You are right, Mr. Code. Since all the regions gained their own Revenant, damage is now minimal. But there is no shortage of conspiracy theories. I mean, don't you Americans have a lot of them as well? From Area 51 to Bigfoot to the Loch Ness Monster."
"But that's…"
"Hmm. You Sirens seem to protect this wanker a lot. Limitless. In the earlier days, Reapers used humans way more to deal with escapees from Hellsgate. Are you aware of why Japan was nuked twice?"
The moment Mia said that, I felt my body freeze up. Did she imply that the nukes were not dropped to end the war? From her train of thought, she seemed to be implying that the nukes fell in order to kill something else. But then why did people believe that…
'They used Death Resonance and neuralized the world… You have got to be shitting me. This can't be real.'
I turned to Aki and she nodded with a small smile, "It is as you surmised, Anata. They dropped the nukes because the Asian battlefront was in danger of falling. While they killed a lot of my countrymen, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were both deemed lost."
"Huh? You mean the cunts during the World War weren't fighting each other?" asked Robyn.
"No, Robyn, they weren't. I actually freaked out when I put two and two together. The two world wars were massive cover-ups. They aimed to explain the catastrophic results of breached battlefronts. Both the Allies and the Axis were fighting the same thing."
I turned around and grabbed Bella by her shoulders. "Wait! Does that mean everything that happened back then was because of demons?"
"Yes, Mr. Code. They just fabricated a narrative and dressed one of the demons as a human. But the world almost ended once. It was due to a simultaneous assault from the Archdemons on almost every battlefront."
"What? That can't be true! But there are records, the veterans! Fuck! Why didn't you tell me? Earlier!" I asked a bit irritated.

"What good would that do, Honey? What good would it do to know that every major event that shook the human world happened because the Reapers failed? The world wars, the crusades, hell even the plagues!
"The Black Plague, the 1918 flu, Justinian, smallpox, everything was Hellsgate's fault! You say you don't care about humans. But you loathe the Reapers' weakness and feel responsible for them. The Sirens and I kept quiet because we knew you would act like this!"
The sudden realization made my blood boil. So the tragedies that happened were not because of some random shit? The deaths and destruction were because of demons? And to not panic the humans, we lied to them and gave them cleverly constructed lies?
While I got angry, it made a lot of sense. People were stupid. But they would act differently if they knew that their loved ones died of disease rather than demons. By hiding the demons from sight, the world was able to continue on. But this was fucking wrong!
'They should have said the truth! Even if it wasn't pretty! At least it would force the people to stand up and fight! They might have a chance! And all because the Reapers did nothing!'
I then felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist. "Possum, get a fucking grip. This changes nothing. They were weak. Plenty died. Move on. Focus on us. We're still here."
Robyn's words were like cold water that splashed my head. My Aussie spoke true. While the Reapers of the past did all sorts of crap, the fact that I was born meant that it worked. It was easy to make criticisms of a leader's decisions when you weren't held accountable.
"Haaa, thanks, Kitten, I am alright now. Bella, Honey, I am sorry for my outburst," I said with a sigh.
When I released Bella's hands, she dove into my chest and embraced me tightly. "It's okay, Mr. Code. I didn't want you to know because it would hurt you. You are very kind, after all. But Robyn is right. The old Reapers did their best. It wasn't perfect, but they did their duty."
I returned her hug and kissed both her and Robyn. The three of us returned to my seats, Robyn on my lap, and Bella using my head as a boob rack. Jo and Aki likewise took back my arms as they both kissed my cheeks.
