“Mayor, are you planning to carry out educational reforms?”
“Mayor, look over here!”
As soon as Mayor Wente stepped out of the exit, he was surrounded by a swarm of reporters, who encircled him at the center as if he were the star surrounded by the moon.
Mayor Wente only smiled and waved at the reporters, ready to get into the government sedan reserved for his official use.
“Please wait a moment, Mr.
Mayor,” suddenly a voice called out from the crowd, “I am your adopted son Allen’s lawyer.”
Then, an elderly gentleman with silver hair slowly pushed through the crowd, escorting a black-haired woman to the front row.
The whole venue became silent in an instant, and some reporters subconsciously aimed their cameras at the black-haired woman who had appeared so suddenly, sensing the scent of an explosive news story.
Yi Jiali was indeed very camera-friendly, with her delicate features and statuesque figure.
When she spoke, she held her head high and her chest out, full of confidence and vigor, showing no fear even when facing the actual hidden hand behind the attempts on her life; she did not hesitate to step forward and speak out when needed.
Standing by her side, He Ao rested one hand on a wooden cane, his face as sharp as a knife, his expression icy, the white hair framing his gray eyes that reflected indifference, resembling an ancient count from film or literature, standing at the top of a castle, looking down upon life and death.
The two of them standing there immediately became the center of the entire crowd, with all eyes converging on them.
“Mr.
Mayor,” Yi Jiali continued to speak as Mayor Wente proceeded to get into the car without responding to her, “Do you know about Allen’s disappearance?”
When the topic reached this point, Wente could no longer continue walking inside.
Allen’s identity was special.
Allen was the child of his main opponent when he first ran for mayor.
That opponent died in a sudden attack by an exotic beast.
Wente, who was nearby at the time, was the first to arrive on the scene, bravely saving four- or five-year-old Allen and, after the exotic beast was killed, immediately announced that he would adopt Allen.
This was the content included in his autobiography.
This incident became a substantial political asset for him.
Leveraging his performance in this exotic beast attack, he won over the supporters of Allen’s father, and with an absolute majority of votes, he was elected Mayor of Dawn City and has been reelected ever since.
The next mayoral election was fast approaching, and any issue with Allen might affect his campaign.
He turned around to look at Yi Jiali and He Ao with a smile,
“Sorry, although I’m not much of a father, I just had lunch with Allen this morning, so I don’t think it’s likely he’d suddenly ‘disappear’?”
Then he turned to the reporters, “Allen has been feeling a bit under the weather these past few days, and is resting.
In the upcoming days at the Nord Hotel, there will be a charity gala organized by the ‘Dawn Homeless Children Education Foundation.’ Allen and I will attend together, and we welcome all of you to give us your support, so that we can all make an effort to change Dawn City.”
“Mayor!
Mayor!”
The supporters around the perimeter raised banners printed with Wente’s name, cheering loudly.
Wente smiled at his supporters, waved, and then again stepped back towards the sedan.
Yi Jiali realized that her words had been completely rebuffed and that her opponent didn’t seem to give her an opportunity to speak, so she panicked for a moment and looked up at He Ao.
But she noticed that the elderly gentleman was nowhere to be seen, and as she searched in confusion,
a deafening voice came through a loudspeaker from a nearby school,
“Mayor, the reason we determine Allen is missing,”
Yi Jiali looked out toward the edge of the crowd and saw He Ao standing at the exit, holding a miniature microphone, the very one used for Wente’s speech.
Earlier, everyone’s attention was focused on Wente, so no one noticed the speaking area.
Gripping the microphone, He Ao spoke slowly and deliberately,
“It was because Allen had hired us to investigate the incident from eight years ago when his father was attacked by an exotic beast; he believed there was more to the incident.
Just a few days ago, he sent us a message saying he had discovered a crucial clue, but then for several days after, we couldn’t contact him.
Therefore, we believe he has disappeared, and we came to you because we thought you might be looking for him too, but now it seems, you are quite certain about his whereabouts?”
“But we won’t give up, we will continue to investigate, and in addition, we will seek help from the Federation.”
As He Ao finished speaking, the school’s security was already rushing towards him.
He Ao casually hung the microphone on the wall beside him and, leaning on his crutch, calmly walked over to Yi Jiali’s side.
Then with Yi Jiali looking bewildered, he took her hand and walked out of the crowd.
The reporters immediately realized what was happening and swarmed towards He Ao and Yi Jiali.
“Why did Allen commission you to investigate his biological father’s death?”
“Do you already have definite clues in hand?”
“Is the Mayor involved with the exotic beast attack from that year?”
At the same time, a group of reporters also surrounded Mayor Wente, asking similar questions.
“We’ve received a message: the school reports that Allen hasn’t been to school for four days.”
While Mayor Wente was hastily reacting, a cry of alarm suddenly came from the crowd.
Immediately realizing he had misspoken and leaked important information, he clamped his mouth shut.
And with that statement, he had poured another bucket of fuel on an already fervent and explosive situation.
Yi Jiali was at a loss on how to deal with the reporters, and He Ao hadn’t even considered responding; he just took Yi Jiali’s hand and entered a taxi parked on the roadside.
This was a vehicle he had already called for via his wristband.
“Driver, head to the Federal Bureau of Investigation building and shake off these reporters.”
“Alright.”
The driver responded with excitement, started the vehicle, and floored the accelerator, scaring back some reporters who tried to block the way.
There are two types of taxis in Dawn City: autonomous and driver-operated.
The driver-operated taxis are more expensive, but the advantage is that you can make some additional requests.
Like in this situation where, if it were an autonomous taxi, it would have started moving slowly according to traffic rules and could easily have been blocked by reporters.
However, a driver could just hit the gas and burst through.
“Elderly…” Yi Jiali felt her head spinning.
She had not even begun to process what was happening when He Ao pulled her into the taxi, but now she was slowly coming to her senses, and with a mixture of belief and doubt, she speculated, “Allen is in the Mayor’s hands?”
“Mmm.”
He Ao nodded lightly.
Mayor Wente was very confident when claiming he had breakfast with Allen and confidently stated that he could bring Allen to the charity dinner.
This showed he was highly certain he could control Allen’s whereabouts.
Add to this the fact that Najia’s men came directly to kill Yi Jiali without the intention of taking prisoners.
Combining the two clues, one could easily deduce that Allen was most likely controlled by the Mayor from the start.
If Allen was still out there, considering Najia’s character, they would have left Yi Jiali alive, trying to lure out Allen or torture out his whereabouts, instead of going straight for the kill.
Of course, figuring out Allen’s whereabouts was just one purpose of this visit, but what He Ao wanted to do was,
Lure the snake out of its hole.
