Life didn't get easier, even in another world-Chương 408: Plan
Chương 408: Plan
Sitting beside the bed, Kairen stared at the person who was thinner and paler than the last time he'd seen him.
"Hmm... So you see, I have... these fucked up dreams..." Kairen began talking with a shaky and hoarse voice, but suddenly paused and giggled.
"It feels so stupid to talk to your body when I've already met you in The Void. I'm feeling ashamed. It wasn't this embarrassing before."
A tear droplet rolled down his cheek and dripped over his pants.
"Ah, this feels so suffocating."
He didn't mean seeing Kain, but the whole situation. Everything was making him feel suffocated. The situation of this world, the gloomy atmosphere of the city, being alone in this hospital, and all of Reynold's memories, was suffocating.
When he woke up, it took a while for Kairen to realize that he wasn't Reynold anymore, and when he came to that realization, he sighed in relief. He was glad, from the bottom of his heart, that he didn't need to experience that life again. Even after going through it once and then remembering its memories, it was still not something Kairen wanted to experience.
He didn't feel it when he was Reynold, but looking back at it now, that kind of life wasn't something he'd ever want to have. It was fine when he was Reynold, but now, the whole memory felt too heavy for him to bear. Kairen didn't think he could survive a day like that, even though they were literally the same person.
"I'm Kairen. Kairen. Kairen, not Reynold."
He repeated so that he wouldn't confuse the matters.
'Huh, but seriously I... I mean Reynold, was a genius. How can he do so many things? And he even managed to fully understand what Roy intended to do. Despite having his memories which contain all of that knowledge, I still can't process them properly... How is that possible? Aren't we the same people? How can I not understand something I have in my memories? Is it even logical?'
Kairen found it extremely unfair. Thinking back at his conversation with Roy when he was in The Void, he remembered the man mentioning something about this.
'What did he say again? Something about my brain getting damaged? I'm sure that was a joke, though. Does one's intelligence come from the soul? I don't think so. It should depend on genetics, right? Me and Reynold only share our souls, not our bodies... Yeah, that must be it-'
"Ren_"
Tap
A hand came out of nowhere and landed on his shoulder with a voice that echoed right beneath his ear.
"Gaaah!"
The same hand pressed down on his body, preventing him from jumping up and running away.
"Whaaatt?!?!??"
"It's me! It's me calm down!"
Kairen snapped his neck to the side and stared at the parson behind him, wide eyes.
"...Oh, Ron..."
The familiar face of his brother entered his vision once he looked back.
"You frightened me! What did you think you were doing, huh? Knock the door or something before giving a fright!"
Aaron pulled his face back with a frown.
"I called you multiple times but you didn't answer, so I came closer- wait..." The man blinked his dilated eyes, "...You're crying?"
"...."
Kairen touched his face. It was wet.
"Um, I think so..."
He must've forgotten about that. Kairen gave his brother a smile, wiped his face, then turned back to the still-dazed man.
"Did you come back from a mission?"
Aaron was wearing his all-black battle uniform, which meant a tight shirt and his cloak. No matter what others did, he refused to wear formal and normal battle attire and kept on using normal clothes and his cloak.
"...Yeah. I just came back. I didn't find you in your room so came searching here... Do you need another hug?"
Kairen robbed his face which was once again wet with tears for a second time.
"I'd appreciate it. I missed you quite a lot, you know."
"...."
The older man hesitantly walked closer before pulling his brother into an embrace, who immediately hugged him back.
"...Ah, man... My brother woke up after days of koma and now even his manner of speech is different."
"...."
Was his manner of speech different? Kairen didn't notice anything out of the ordinary though. Disregarding the unimportant question, he changed the topic to something he was curious about.
"How long was I unconscious for?"
"About 6 days."
"Oh!"
That was not too long nor too short amount of time. Kairen was glad he wasn't out for more than a week.
"How is the situation?"

Letting go of his brother, Aaron sat down beside the bed and cast his gaze out the window.
"Can't you tell?" he didn't wait for Kairen's response. "The number of the monsters is a lot, and they target us from everywhere. The gates don't go away no matter what we do and the only thing we can do is to fight off the monsters and keep the citizens in shelters."
Aaron reported in a steady and calm voice as if reading a newspaper instead of talking about battles.
"But it's bearable."
He went silent after that last comment. It meant that they were having it hard, but could keep up for now.
"That won't last for long though," Kairen replied. "They'll only grow stronger while our forces become tired from excessive fighting. We need to do something before it's too late, but eliminating the gates is not possible."
He'd thought about it before. Kairen could take the gates down one by one if he wanted to. It'd take a lot of time but he'd eventually succeed. However, there was a problem with this. At first, he thought the appearance of the gates was something normal that happened to a lot of other worlds such as Earth, but now, he doubted that.
Although these gates would appear in the world that were exposed to a great amount of irregularity, this world shouldn't be one of them. First of all, this place got overturned by Irregularity long ago, thousands of years in the past, and the wave has long passed over this place. It wasn't possible for it to return to attack this place again.
On top of that, he now had the memories of a certain someone in the past. He knew that Roy was trying to build a system over this land to defend against the storm of irregularity. Reynold even further updated that system by adding other parts to it, making sure that the plan succeeded.
Kairen hadn't seen what happened to those structures, but as this world wasn't destroyed or swallowed by chaos, he could tell that the structures must've been effective to some degree. If so, according to Roy's and Reynold's calculations, there must be nothing out of the ordinary about the wave that swallowed this world in the past. The wave wasn't too powerful back then to leave these gates behind.
All of these allowed Kairen to have a guess.
"I'm afraid all of these gates might've been the doing of that holy saint, Samuel. If he can create a disaster at such a level without even showing himself, it's unclear what else he can do if he comes here personally. That's why we need to take action first. I have to activate that machine as soon as possible."
"....."
Aaron watched his brother rattle on without interfering with him. Once Kairen was done talking, Aaron sighed with a tired face.
"You aren't doing shit. You've just woken up from a 6-day coma."
Sorry for being dead for such a long time...
