398 Things

A man wearing a white, doctor's coat, checked the few papers in his hands before looking at the two people in the room. "There is nothing wrong with his body, all the tests have acceptable results. Although his body is considerably weak, it's not to the extent that might bring him trouble for now, however, he needs to take care of his body more in order to improve his health. I'll give him some pills he needs to take, mostly vitamins and such. Overall, there is nothing threatening his life or any problems with his health. Still, considering that he was unconscious for a long while, it'd be nice if he stayed in the hospital for another night, only to reassure that there is nothing wrong."

Kairen pulled down the sleeves of his clothes and leaned back. Aaron peeked at him once before nodding at the doctor. With that, the doctor turned around and left the room. "You were unconscious for a whole day without any reason, huh?"

Instead of responding to Aaron, Kairen pulled the blanket over him while still sitting on top of the bed in silence. "Either the doctors don't know how to do their job, or a certain someone is hiding things from me," Aaron huffed as he glared at his brother on the bed, "Again!"

His brother was overwhelmed by anger. "Yeah, yeah, nothing is wrong at all! It's only natural to suddenly drop faint here and there!"

'You can just directly question me instead of nagging like an aunt...' A faint smile formed on Kairen's lips. He lowered his head so that his brother wouldn't see it. "It's not something that doctors would understand."

"Ah yeah? Yes, sir! Please tell me more about it!"

"...."

Kairen didn't react to his brother's ridiculing tone. He curled his body a little bit, clasping his hands and only staring at them in silence. "Ren!!!"

"..."

Kairen didn't answer. He couldn't. What was he supposed to say? That he was seeing the memories of his previous life? That the life that has ended long ago was now affecting his mind, making him lose his senses and reason? That he was attacked with emotions that didn't belong to him, yet came from no one but himself? What if he was asked about those memories? What was he supposed to say? That he'd lost his family and was left an orphan at the age of 5? That he still felt a sting in his chest whenever he was reminded of his deceased brother, yet found the said brother sitting in front of him safe and sound the next second. That he'd stuck to a man who was probably an immortal being associated with many kinds of dangers, and that he'd got hurt because of that man? Still, Reyn was never mad at his mister or sad about the fact that he was sick because of him, as he was allowed to stay with Roy due to that incident. Was that when Reyn's soul, which was also Kairen's soul, got damaged?

The place where they resided, and the structure that Roy was building... Kairen knew where it was. It was something he couldn't easily forget anyway as it was one of the first places he visited after joining SMF. The ancient temple in the middle of the plain, one of the three structures they visited while searching for clues regarding a painting, the place that was half-ruined when they found it. It had an underground area and a locked door at the end of the tunnel. Kairen now knew what was at the end of that path, and who lived at that place. He remembered how he grabbed a bunch of papers with unskilled, childish scribes on them, and took them out of the tunnel in an attempt to study them, but the papers turned to dust as soon as he left the underground area. He now knew whose those papers belonged to, to himself. He also remembered an old engraved pattern he'd found on the platform in the middle of the area, the platform which was built right on top of the device that was at the end of the tunnel. The childish illustration that had left him wondering when he saw it first, was now a scene out of his memories. And the necklace that was now being held in a protected room as a dangerous device was something that was modified to save his life. Was he supposed to talk about them? Could he? The answer was 'no'!

Kairen stared at the tips of his fingers which were slightly shaking in silence. "...Why do you have such an expression?"

"...."

Again, there were no answers. Aaron stared at Kairen for a moment before plopping down on the bed. "Haah! Alright, alright! I won't ask anymore so stop making that face!"

Kairen touched his face. What did his brother mean? Kairen was still smiling! He didn't ask anything though. The room was silent for a few minutes. "I thought you'd throw a tantrum about not wanting to stay at the hospital and wanting to go home. I don't remember there being a single time when you stayed in the hospital without nagging and begging me to allow you to go."

Aaron was right. Kairen hated hospitals. "If it helps you feel less anxious, then I'm fine with it."

"...." Aaron opened his mouth but said nothing. He stared at Kairen while blinking his eyes. "...I'm only capable of making you worry, after all," he mumbled as he pulled the blanket closer. "...." Aaron blinked again and again. "No there is definitely something wrong with you!"

This was the first time this little stupid brother of his was acting like this! Right at that moment, Aaron heard a low voice that barely escaped the other boy's tightly closed lips. "...Yes..."

No, there was one time when he'd seen this little stupid brother of his in such a state. That was when they'd just lost their parents. But nothing significant has happened recently!

The boy lowered his head even more, "I'm scared..."

Kairen was finally finding answers to his many questions, but he wished he wouldn't get his answers in such a way. He felt like if this kept going on, he'd eventually lose himself, Kairen would lose to Reynold, and he'd forget his own memories again. Kairen was scared. "What are you scared of? Hey! Look at me! A-are you crying? Ren?" His brother came closer and examined Kairen in panic. Seeing him acting like this despite being so angry a few seconds ago, Kairen couldn't help but chuckle. "No, I'm not crying."

Kairen had to ignore everything related to Reynold, even the fears that person brought to him.
