Level Up: Voidwalker-Chapter 347: Unless You’re Foolish
Atlas and Medusa started making love in the cave, and they went at it for hours until both were out of breath. He was sitting in front of the fire as the older woman cooked the shark meat while he stood up.
His body cracked causing her to comment, grinning. ''Still all stiff? I'll have the others massage you when we return.''
''Sure,'' he muttered before walking toward the edge.
Atlas gazed into the dark water and saw nothing causing him to sigh in relief as he spoke. ''Maybe we can get out of here soon and reach the Achaemenid lands.''
The snake beauty glanced at him and nodded. ''It should be safe enough, the sharks have gone away, it seems.''
As Medusa's words echoed faintly in the damp, cavernous air, a chilling aura surged into the cave like an icy tide, enveloping them in an oppressive weight that prickled their skin and tightened their chests.
Both froze, their instincts screaming danger as the atmosphere grew thick with an almost tangible dread. Medusa moved to his side, her emerald eyes narrowing as they darted toward the cave's entrance.
''Brace yourself,'' she whispered, her tone low and urgent. ''That's the presence of a Devil of the Deep. They're ancient creatures that stalk the ocean's trenches. Even the strongest warriors tread lightly in their presence.''
Atlas, his heart pounding like a war drum, felt a shiver crawl up his spine, the primal fear of the unknown gripping him tightly. Despite the instinct to shrink back, curiosity or perhaps defiance urged him to his feet.
He crept cautiously toward the water's edge, his boots scraping softly against the stone floor. The flickering glow of the fire cast eerie shadows across the surface, and for a moment, he saw nothing but black.
Then, a ripple broke the stillness, followed by the slow, deliberate sweep of a scaled tail slicing through the water. Its size was staggering, easily wider than he was tall, its dark scales catching the faint light in a way that made it seem otherworldly.
The sight sent a jolt of terror through him as the monster was much stronger than he and anyone he'd come across, his breath catching as he stumbled back, retreating to the relative safety of the fire's warm glow.
Medusa, ever watchful, knelt beside the crackling flames and extended a skewer of roasted meat toward him. ''Eat,'' she said softly, her tone carrying a hint of reassurance. ''You'll need your strength. The Deep Devils don't often venture this close to shore, but their presence is a warning. We're not alone down here.''
Atlas accepted the meat, the warmth of the fire doing little to quell the chill that had settled into his bones. As he bit into the tender flesh, his mind raced, the reality of the monstrous entity that prowled just outside their fragile sanctuary.
The cave, once a refuge, now felt like a precarious outpost on the edge of an abyss, with only Medusa's resolve and the flickering fire standing between them and the terrors of the deep.
''There are monsters down here that would destroy anyone on the surface,'' she revealed. ''They tend not to bother going after smaller beings, but thanks to your mana, you're like a beacon to them.''
Atlas shivered at her words before questioning. ''We can rush out of here once you get your energy back.''
The older woman inclined her head in a slow, deliberate nod, her weathered lips curling into a faint smile as she savored the meat. He watched as the firelight danced across her beautiful features, casting shadows that seemed to tell stories of their own.
Across from her, Atlas mirrored her contentment, his fork pausing only briefly as he relished the meal they shared in the dimly lit cave. The crackling of the fire and occasional drip of water from above were the only sounds.
Their peaceful moment was shattered. The cave trembled violently, the ground beneath them quaking as a thunderous impact reverberated through the stone walls. Dust and small pebbles rained from the ceiling, and his head whipped toward the water.
His eyes narrowed, searching for the source of the disturbance, his pulse quickening as the tremors subsided but left an eerie tension in the air. Medusa leaned back against the rough-hewn wall, her serpentine locks hissing softly as they writhed in the flickering light.
''It's a sea quake, handsome,'' she said, her voice low.
She took another bite of the meat, chewing thoughtfully before continuing. ''They're common enough when mana storms sweep through the world. The ocean's restless, you see, stirred up by the wild energies that churn in the aether. Nothing to fret over… unless you're foolish enough to be swimming out there when it hits.''
Her words carried a pearl of wisdom, as if she'd witnessed countless such events in her long, enigmatic life. The young man's gaze lingered on the water, its surface now still but for the faintest ripples, as if the cave itself were holding its breath.
The air felt heavier now, charged with the residual energy of the quake, and he couldn't shake the sense that something vast and unseen was stirring just beyond the veil of the world they knew.
Following that, the couple stayed there for a while until Atlas jumped up while scanning the outside world. Nothing came back, promoting him to speak. ''Medusa, no monsters are there. We should head back to shore.''
''Good idea,'' she answered.
Afterward, the older woman dived into the water and transformed into her massive snake form as Atlas joined her. Just then, she started swimming faster, only to hear the woman's voice in his mind.
'Blood Sharks are coming,' she said. 'Hold on.'
Atlas's grip tightened on her scales as he felt the water around them shift, stirred by the approach of something predatory. The distant thrum of movement grew louder, a rhythm that set his heart pounding. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Medusa surged forward, her serpentine body weaving through the underwater maze with a speed that belied her massive size, determined to outrun the unseen hunters closing in on them.
The water churned violently around them, a turbulent storm of bubbles and currents as the older woman's serpentine form sliced through the deep-sea darkness. Her massive, obsidian-scaled body twisted.
Atlas clung tightly to her, his fingers digging into the smooth scales, his breath held in short bursts as he fought to keep his grip against the pull of the water. The glow of strange, deep-sea flora cast fleeting, ghostly light across their path.
Behind them, the Blood Sharks pursued with terrifying precision. Their sleek, monstrous forms, each as long as a warship, with jagged teeth glinting like rows of serrated blades, cut through the water with predatory intent.
Their eyes glowed a sickly crimson, pulsing with a hunger that seemed to draw the very light from the surrounding depths. The water vibrated with their approach, a low, thrumming pulse that Atlas felt in his bones, like the heartbeat of some ancient, malevolent force.
The sharks' movements were synchronized, their massive bodies weaving in a deadly dance, closing the distance with every powerful thrust of their tails. Medusa's voice rang in Atlas's mind again. 'They're gaining, but they won't have us. Stay with me.'
She surged forward, her coils undulating with a burst of speed that sent a shockwave rippling through the water. The tunnel narrowed, its walls closing in like the jaws of a trap, but Medusa navigated the tightening space with uncanny speed.
Whenever the creatures got close, Atlas hit them with a Void Blast that burned the shark's body in half. Being underwater didn't bother him as he continued firing Void Bullets and Arrows at the pursuers.
Explosions erupted, causing the Blood Sharks to scatter as Medusa managed to reach the shore. She headed straight for the surface and erupted before transforming into her human form.
Atlas hit the shore with a heavy thud, his boots sinking into the wet sand as he stumbled forward, still reeling from the harrowing escape. The air was sharp with the tang of salt and the faint ozone of mana lingering from the storm.
Before either could speak, a shimmering portal tore open the air just paces away, its edges crackling with violet energy. From it burst a blaze of purple flames, and Amethyst soared out in her phoenix form, her wings wreathed in a purple fire that lit up the dark shore.
Her piercing cry echoed across the beach, a sound both majestic and terrifying, as she wheeled in the air, her gaze locking onto the dark shapes surging from the water. The Blood Sharks were still there.
Their crimson eyes glowed with feral hunger as they lunged toward the shore, jaws snapping. Amethyst dove, her wings flaring wide, and unleashed a torrent of purple flames that scorched the air with an otherworldly heat.
The fire engulfed the nearest sharks, their massive bodies thrashing as the violet inferno consumed their scales, reducing them to smoldering husks in moments. The water boiled where the flames met it.
