Chapter 87: 87: Disappointed with the results - Part 2

Farming EXP was fun... mainly because Liam was no longer struggling to control his magic as he used to.

He was getting better at controlling his output, and being able to manage his magic helped a ton in clearing out monsters he had not seen before.

Most of the monsters in this dungeon were machine-type and had a modern feel to them, so simply hitting them hard did nothing. Liam had to destroy their nucleus, and for that, he had to concentrate and find their core.

"You’ve gotten faster, Liam. Hey, dodge to the correct side, or you will waste your speed... no, wait! Attack better... tsk, you still have a long way to go."

Asger complained as he clung to Liam’s shoulder. He was advising Liam from the sidelines, and the half-dragon seemed to be having fun.

Within half an hour, Liam was able to clear out a few farming fields, and he wanted to call it a day. But Liam still did not feel satisfied. He wanted to practice more.

"Let’s head toward the boss. We won’t kill it, but I do want to challenge it. Asger, stop me if it seems like I am going too far, alright?"

Liam asked his familiar for a favor, and Asger let out a tired sigh as soon as he heard Liam speak.

Sigh

"You need to take this more seriously, human. But fine! If you want to head out and try this boss, then we should head out and try it now. I will stop you if you are about to go overboard."

Asger promised, and Liam quickly tracked down the boss of this dungeon.

He entered the underground facility where the boss was and instantly halted when he heard the sound of someone fighting against it.

"Well, it seems like I am not the only one who wanted to fight the boss today. Someone else seems to be having fun as well. A party of three from what I can feel. System, care to confirm?"

Liam asked while looking at the screen in front of him. The screen flashed blue before answering him.

[Affirmative. Three human magic signatures registered.]

Liam let out a sigh of relief before deciding whether he should head inside or not. In the end, he decided that it would be best to head in and check out what was happening.

Even if he did not help out or face the boss himself, taking a look around wouldn’t be that bad... right?

"Let’s head to the boss room now."

______

Liam stepped into the boss room, his footsteps light as he took in the scene before him. Three people stood inside.

Two of them were locked in combat against the dungeon boss—a massive, mechanical beast with glowing red eyes and a body of interlocking steel plates.

The third person, however, stood on the sidelines, arms crossed, watching the battle with a critical eye.

Liam’s sharp senses instantly picked up on the differences between the three.

The two struggling against the boss were clearly weaker—likely C-class at best. Their movements were decent, but their attacks barely left a scratch on the boss’s metallic hide.

Meanwhile, the man standing to the side radiated a different kind of energy. He was composed, not even slightly tense, and the way he analyzed the fight made it clear that he was much stronger than the other two.

’B-class, at least’

Liam concluded. ’Looks like a teacher training his students on how to fight monsters.’

Liam decided to keep his distance. He had no reason to interfere. This was their fight, not his.

He had only wanted to observe and maybe pick up some insights about how others handled dungeon bosses.

But just as he was about to settle against a broken column, the boss suddenly turned its head toward him.

In an instant, the monster abandoned its previous opponents and started charging straight for Liam.

The two struggling fighters barely had time to react before the creature was already past them.

"Liam, you absolute magnet for trouble. How do you manage to do this every time? Is this some kind of magic?"

Asger muttered from his hidden perch on Liam’s shoulder.

"Hey! Get out of there!"

The instructor’s sharp voice cut through the air. His tone was urgent, bordering on panicked.

Liam, however, remained perfectly calm.

The instructor, seeing that Liam wasn’t moving, cursed under his breath and began to cast a spell, clearly preparing to intervene. The two fighters also turned, eyes wide with shock, expecting to see the newcomer get crushed by the rampaging boss.

But before the instructor could make his move, Liam raised his hand.

The air around him shifted.

Electric blue energy crackled to life around his fingers, twisting like threads before shooting toward the incoming monster.

Liam carefully controlled his magic output, ensuring that the force was strong enough to incapacitate the beast but not kill it.

The effect was instantaneous.

The monster, mid-charge, suddenly shuddered and collapsed, skidding across the ground with a loud, metallic crash. Its red eyes dimmed, and it stopped moving entirely.

A silence fell over the room.

The two struggling fighters were left gaping at Liam in disbelief. The instructor, who had been seconds away from casting his own spell, stood frozen, his mouth slightly open.

Liam let out a disappointed sigh, flexing his fingers as he analyzed the results.

"That was too easy. I really need to find something challenging or I won’t get better."

He muttered under his breath.

The monster tried to move once more and its claws almost reached out toward Liam. But Liam decided to attack the monster once more and knock it out for good.

It had been easy to do and Liam sighed in regret as walked toward the boss. He had hoped for a slight challenge, but it turned out that his hopes had been dashed. Now, he needed to get out of here and head back home.

’What should I have for dinner? Shit! I need to go shopping for food.’
