Chapter 146: 146: Not Refuse- Part 1

The class finally ended, and the teacher left the room. As soon as she did, the barely concealed excitement among the students erupted, and they began to talk loudly once more.

"Finally, that hag left. Now we can talk more about what we are going to do for the tournament."

"Hey, have you thought about the theme already? I know what I am going to do!"

"I have decided as well! I am going to amaze everyone..." fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Students were already divided as they discussed what to do next, so it was not hard for Liam to overhear their plans.

The concept of joining a guild and restricting his freedom did not sound great to Liam, but he could understand why most of the students here found it important.

Not everyone could have the same luck or skill as Liam had.

Actually, from what he had seen so far, most of the students here would be lucky to even be classified as magicians.

"I should head to my next class. I feel like I will be late to this class otherwise."

Liam sighed and left the classroom first.

The hallway felt deserted, and the silence almost felt deafening. But Liam continued to walk quietly toward his class.

He was not the only one paying attention to his surroundings, but Asger was as well. That was why Asger twisted its body backward to bite the hand that threatened to reach for Liam.

Victor pulled his hand back to safety quickly before giving the half-dragon an almost dirty look... which did nothing to deter Asger from reaching to bite Victor once again.

However, this time, Liam noticed the spell Victor was about to cast, and he held Asger before he could injure himself any further by accident.

"Tsk, let me go!"

Asger complained as he was suspended in the air. His sharp teeth threatened to bite through Victor’s hand... or so the half-dragon likely thought.

But Liam knew better and decided that he did not want to deal with the incoming fight.

"Asger, it’s fine. Let’s not think about fighting right now. And you... what do you want from me?"

Liam asked Victor with an almost sour look on his face.

He had nothing personal against Victor...

Actually, it is personal. Every time this man comes to find me, nothing good happens. I don’t think the news he brought me this time is any good either.

The look on Victor’s face was one that made Liam sigh in annoyance. But he kept his cool and decided to face Victor head-on.

"You’re asking what I want from you? Well, what I want from you is simple, Liam. You know the upcoming tournament? I want to form a contract with you regarding that... don’t look so worried! I just need to make sure another guild doesn’t snatch you up."

Victor’s condition sounded too simple, and hearing it made Liam shudder.

His instincts instantly told him that Victor was hiding a lot from him.

"You want me to reject other guilds who approach me? And what if I don’t want to do that?"

Liam asked in a curious voice. He was going to accept Victor’s condition, mainly because he did not want to be bothered by others.

But Liam still tried to press his luck to see how far he could go and what he could get out of Victor in return.

Victor smirked as he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed as he watched Liam carefully.

The younger man was clearly trying to gauge his limits, attempting to negotiate, but Victor had played these games far longer than Liam had.

He knew exactly when to push and when to dangle an enticing reward in front of someone.

"Alright, I’ll throw you a bone. If you sign a contract with me for the duration of the tournament, I’ll grant you access to an A-class private dungeon."

Victor said, his smirk widening.

Liam’s eyes widened slightly before he quickly schooled his expression back to neutrality.

An A-class dungeon? Those were nearly impossible to get into without major backing. The resources he could find there would be invaluable, not to mention the experience he would gain.

He hesitated for only a moment before exhaling and nodding.

"Fine. But only for the duration of the tournament. Once it’s over, this contract is void."

Victor chuckled, clearly pleased with himself.

"Of course. You have my word."

A magical contract formed between them, a shimmering golden sigil appearing in the air before splitting in two and embedding itself into their hands.

Liam felt the faint pull of magic binding him to the agreement, a reminder that he was now temporarily associated with Victor and his guild.

With the deal sealed, Liam left the meeting and headed home, his mind still turning over the implications of what he had just agreed to.

He had no intention of staying tied to Victor beyond the tournament, but something told him this arrangement wasn’t going to be as simple as he hoped.

As Liam stepped out into the cool night air, he clenched and unclenched his fists, feeling the residual tingle of the magical contract settling into his skin.

He had made his decision, but that didn’t mean he trusted Victor.

The man was too smooth, too calculating. Liam had seen enough power plays to recognize when someone was setting the board for a much bigger game.

Still, an A-class dungeon was too good to pass up. If he played this right, he could gain enough strength to stand on his own without relying on anyone.

That was the goal. No more debts, no more contracts—just his own power, earned through his own efforts.

Reaching his apartment, he locked the door behind him and pulled up his status window.

His stats had improved significantly over the last few months, but he still wasn’t where he needed to be. The upcoming tournament would be brutal.

The best of the best would be competing, and Victor wouldn’t have approached him if he didn’t think Liam was a worthwhile investment.

Sighing, he shut the interface with a swipe of his hand. He had a lot of training to do before stepping into that dungeon.
