Chapter 127: 127: Trail of being one - part 3

Liam kept his expression neutral as he nodded at Ethan.

"I’ll need some time to think about it," he said.

Ethan studied him for a moment before giving a small, approving nod.

"Fair enough. You have one day. But keep this to yourself in the meantime."

Liam agreed outwardly, but inside, he had already made up his mind—he wasn’t going to keep this a secret.

After leaving the hidden meeting room, Liam walked through the academy halls, deep in thought. Asger, still perched on his shoulder in his small lizard form, flicked his tail in irritation.

"You’re not actually thinking about this, are you?"

Liam sighed.

"No. But I want to know what they’re up to."

Asger scoffed.

"You already know what they’re up to. And you also know the best way to handle it."

Liam rolled his eyes.

"You mean just ’take care’ of them, right?"

"Obviously. This is trouble, Liam. We should be the ones setting the trap, not walking into one."

Asger huffed, his golden eyes gleaming.

Liam didn’t argue with that. His gut told him this was dangerous, but he needed more information before making a move.

The rest of his classes passed in a blur, his mind occupied with everything he had learned.

He barely paid attention to the lessons, instead running through all the details of his interaction with Ethan, Zane, and Seraphina. There were still too many unanswered questions.

When the final bell rang, Liam left the academy immediately, heading home with purpose.

As soon as he entered, he found Elder Elias in the study, as if the old man had been expecting him.

Without hesitation, Liam recounted everything—the strange club, the abilities they claimed to have, and Ethan’s so-called trial.

Elder Elias listened in silence, his hands clasped together. His sharp eyes never left Liam’s face, but his expression remained unreadable.

Asger, however, was not nearly as patient.

"I say we crush them before this gets worse,"

He declared.

Liam shot him a dry look.

"Yes, we know your opinion."

Elder Elias finally spoke, his tone careful.

"This is dangerous, Liam. If what they say is true, then they’re dabbling in something highly unstable. Spirits do not merge with souls without consequence."

Liam nodded.

"I figured as much. But what do I do? Play along?"

Elder Elias sighed.

"For now, yes. If you reject them outright, they may turn hostile. We need more information before taking action."

Asger grumbled.

"Or we could just get rid of them before they become a bigger problem."

Elder Elias ignored him.

"If they truly believe you are one of them, that works to your advantage. You’ll have access to knowledge they wouldn’t normally share with outsiders."

Liam wasn’t thrilled about playing along, but he understood the logic behind it. He couldn’t fight something he didn’t fully understand.

"Alright. I’ll go along with it for now. But if things get worse, I’m shutting this down"

Liam said.

Elder Elias nodded in approval

"Be careful."

That night, Liam lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. His instincts screamed that he was being dragged into something bigger than he realized.

He turned to the side, eyes narrowing.

Ethan had asked him to keep things to himself.

Which meant that, if they found out he had told Elder Elias...

Liam exhaled.

This was going to be a dangerous game.

And he had no choice but to play it.

The next day, Liam walked into the academy with a sense of unease settling in his chest.

He wasn’t afraid, but he was aware that every move he made from now on would be scrutinized.

He had willingly stepped into this game, and now, he had to be careful not to reveal his true intentions.

As soon as he sat down in his usual seat, Zane appeared, leaning over his desk with an easygoing smile. But Liam didn’t miss the sharpness in his eyes.

"So. What did you and our leader talk about yesterday?"

Zane drawled.

Liam kept his expression neutral.

"Nothing much. He just wanted to update me about something. It is nothing you need to be worried about."

He said simply. It was almost true, so Liam sounded confident enough when he spoke.

Zane chuckled, but there was an edge to it.

"Nothing much, huh?"

His gaze flickered with something unreadable—jealousy, maybe? Suspicion? Liam wasn’t sure, but he knew he had to tread carefully.

He met Zane’s gaze without flinching.

"Yeah. He just wanted to test something, that’s all."

Zane hummed, clearly not satisfied with the answer.

"Well, if Ethan’s interested in you, that means you’ve got something special. Don’t go stealing all the attention, alright?"

He gave Liam a playful nudge.

Liam offered a small smirk.

"I’ll try not to."

Zane clapped him on the shoulder before stepping away, but Liam didn’t relax. That interaction had been more than just casual curiosity. Zane was watching him closely.

As the morning classes dragged on, Liam kept replaying the conversation in his head. Zane had acted friendly, but there was an unspoken warning in his words. It confirmed what Liam had already suspected—he was being tested.

When the break arrived, Liam casually approached Zane, keeping his voice light.

"Where are we meeting today?"

Zane gave him a grin and slipped him a small folded note.

"Same as yesterday. Just don’t be late."

With that, he turned on his heel and disappeared into the hallway.

Liam unfolded the note and found an address scribbled on it.

Asger, still in his lizard form on Liam’s shoulder, let out a low grumble.

"You do realize you’re walking straight into a trap, right?"

Liam smirked, folding the paper and tucking it into his pocket.

"Of course."

Asger narrowed his golden eyes.

"And you’re just going to go along with it?"

Liam shrugged.

"For now."

The familiar huffed.

"You’re an idiot."

Liam chuckled.

"Maybe."

But despite his calm demeanor, he knew that things were only going to get more dangerous from here. And the worst part?

He was looking forward to it.
