Chapter 125: 125: Trail of being one - part 1

The moment Liam slid into the seat behind Zane and Seraphina, the air around them shifted.

Zane, mid-conversation with Seraphina, paused. His usual carefree smirk faltered, his brows raising in momentary surprise.

Seraphina’s reaction was more controlled, but Liam caught the way her fingers twitched slightly, as if resisting the urge to reach for a weapon.

Liam acted as though he didn’t notice. He leaned back in his chair, keeping his expression neutral, waiting for them to speak first.

Zane recovered quickly, his grin slipping back into place.

"Well, well. Look who decided to show up."

Liam gave a casual shrug.

"Why wouldn’t I?"

Zane exchanged a glance with Seraphina before leaning in slightly.

"So... have you adjusted yet?"

Liam froze for a fraction of a second, but he knew better than to let it show.

Adjusted?

Zane was expecting something—no, he was assuming something had happened to Liam. And from the way Seraphina was still watching him like a predator sizing up its prey, Liam had the feeling that they were testing him.

He made a quick decision.

Liam forced a small smirk onto his lips and nodded.

"Yeah. I have."

Seraphina narrowed her eyes.

"That fast?"

Liam shrugged again.

"Guess it didn’t take much for me."

Seraphina didn’t look convinced.

"That’s unusual. Most people take longer to—"

"It happens. Some people adjust quicker than others. Looks like Liam’s one of those lucky few."

Zane cut in smoothly, flashing Seraphina a look before turning back to Liam.

Seraphina didn’t argue, but Liam could tell she wasn’t satisfied with the explanation. She tapped her fingers against her desk, gaze flickering between Zane and Liam as if she was deciding whether or not to press further.

Liam kept his face neutral, even as his mind raced.

What exactly do they think happened to me?

If they suspected he had changed after last night’s encounter with the shadow entity, then that meant—

They had been expecting something to happen to him.

And yet, here they were, accepting him now that they thought it had.

Liam decided not to question it. Not yet. He needed more information first.

Asger shifted on Liam’s shoulder, his tail flicking in agitation.

"I don’t like them. And I don’t like where this is going."

He muttered under his breath. His voice was low, meant only for Liam to hear.

Liam barely acknowledged him, keeping his focus on Zane and Seraphina.

"So, what happens next?"

He asked, feigning curiosity.

The pair exchanged a look—one filled with silent understanding, as if they had expected this question.

Seraphina was the one to answer.

"Now that you’re one of us, it’s time you meet the others."

Liam felt his stomach twist, but he kept his expression neutral.

"Others?"

Zane smirked, leaning in slightly.

"Like-minded people. People like us."

Liam wasn’t sure what that meant, but he nodded as if he understood.

Seraphina pulled a small folded slip of paper from her pocket and slid it across the desk toward him.

"Room 207, East Wing. Meet us there during the break."

Liam took the paper without hesitation, glancing at the number before tucking it into his pocket.

Zane’s grin widened.

"You won’t regret it."

Asger let out a sharp exhale, his claws lightly digging into Liam’s shoulder.

"You will regret it."

He whispered, his tone filled with clear disapproval.

Liam ignored him.

His gut told him that this wasn’t just some friendly invitation—it was a test. A test he needed to pass if he wanted to uncover the truth behind Zane, Seraphina, and whatever strange society they belonged to.

Was it dangerous? Absolutely.

Was it a trap? Most likely.

But Liam had already stepped onto this path. And he wasn’t turning back now.

The rest of the classes before lunch passed in a blur. Liam barely paid attention, his mind occupied with the invitation to Room 207 and what it could mean.

Asger, still perched on his shoulder, had been grumbling the entire time.

"Liam, I’m telling you—this is stupid. You’re walking into a trap, and you know it." ƒreewebɳovel.com

Liam sighed, brushing his fingers lightly against Asger’s head to calm him down.

"I know."

"Then why are we still going?"

"Because I need answers."

Asger huffed, clearly frustrated.

"Fine, but when they inevitably try something shady, don’t say I didn’t warn you."

Liam didn’t reply.

When the lunch bell rang, students flooded out of the classroom, heading toward the cafeteria or their usual hangout spots. Liam, however, made his way toward the East Wing, where Room 207 awaited.

As he approached, his magic sense flared.

The lingering presences from the abandoned school were here.

Liam’s brows furrowed. How could no one else sense them? Even in broad daylight, the room practically radiated a thick, unnatural energy.

Steeling himself, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The moment he entered, all eyes turned toward him.

There were about ten people in the room, each one exuding an eerie sense of familiarity—similar to the aura that had surrounded Zane and Seraphina the night before.

Liam instantly knew what this was.

They were a group. A faction.

And they were waiting for him.

Zane, standing near the center, grinned. "Look who decided to show up."

Liam scanned the room, keeping his expression neutral. He could feel the way some of them eyed him—like opportunists sizing up a new recruit.

Seraphina stood nearby, watching him carefully.

And then there was someone new.

A man sitting comfortably in a chair near the back, watching everything unfold with a calm, unreadable expression.

Zane gestured toward him.

"Liam, meet Ethan—our leader."

Ethan looked at Liam with narrowed eyes before turning to Zane.

"Is he truly one of us?"

Zane smirked.

"A powerful one went after him. It’s a given that he fell."

Liam’s stomach twisted slightly at the wording. Fell?

Ethan still didn’t look convinced.

"Then he won’t have a problem proving it."

Liam’s senses sharpened.

"Prove what, exactly?"

Ethan leaned forward, studying Liam closely.

"If you truly belong with us, then you must undergo a trial."
