Chapter 1496: Mud Warriors

=Please tell me you figured out a way to get our feed back up.=

<Almost got it...>

As the eyes that watched over Zhen Liu and his Kaijin, Logos and Pathos weren’t having a good time.

=Remind me when they get back to establish some kind of redundancy loops as to prevent this sort of scenario from happening again,= Logos grumbled as they stared at the busted screens. =This is horse shit.=

<No shit.>

As the watchers of the library, Logos and Pathos had to rely on the kaijin and their current Lord in order to see the coming and going of the outside world.

The kaijin’s ability to be connected to each other and Zhen Liu via their very existences had a huge amount of benefits that came with some incredibly dangerous drawbacks.

For example, while the kaijin could easily share all of their senses and information with each other and Zhen Liu, not all forms of information were useful or beneficial.

Pain is technically a form of information that alerts the body to avoid certain stimuli. In other words, if one kaijin got injured, they would all feel as if they got injured...well, at least that was supposed to be the case.

Unbeknownst to them, especially Zhen Liu, the current Kaijin Lord of this era had been subconsciously preventing the flow of injuries and the like by taking it all himself.

Hence why when Hurricroak suffered electrical burns, Zhen Liu was the only one to get injured, and why when Mysticlassic got their shit rocked in the Mines of Malevolence, Zhen Liu was feeling his head shake three times over.

When the Ragnarockers got exposed to the [Sleeping Crane Bell], all three of them were afflicted with intense sleep-focused aether music.

If only one of them was exposed to the music, only that particular Kaijin and Zhen Liu would feel incredibly sleepy, while the rest of the kaijin would be able to act and assist.

However, since all three of the Ragnarockers were affected at the same time, Zhen Liu’s ability to cope with status effects was overwhelmed in an instant and created an overflow of sorts.

On the surface, this overflow just meant that any and all active kaijin were suddenly falling asleep or very close to falling asleep.

It wasn’t a big deal to the kaijin that weren’t in active combat, such as the Gallop Brothers, the Secretaries of the Clan, or the ones that weren’t truly connected to Zhen Liu, but it was a big issue for all of the kaijin in Rainbowden at this time.

Especially since, if the kaijin were rendered fully unconscious, Logos and Pathos wouldn’t be able to tell what was going on.

Thankfully, they still had some semiconscious ones to work with.

<Alright, fuck it,> Pathos grunted in disgust over having to compromise on a shitty solution. <I’m going to route all our resources into just getting one of the feeds of Mysticlassic back online. At the very least, we can make sure that our Lord’s friends are still alive.>

=Good call. Who knows what kind of shit they might be getting into right now...=

...The aforementioned shit...

^WHAT THE FUCK?!^

®^€°¢=!

When Olstenna took out the first guard with a blast of purple flames, he had done so under the assumption that the target was a normal mortal warrior that had burnable flesh and skin and that one solid surprise attack to the face would take them out of the fight.

That notion turned out to be incredibly incorrect.

Shortly after Olstenna, Alice, Antonio, and Harriet had taken out the other assassins that were in hiding, the very first one that Olstenna had taken out suddenly popped right back up like he hadn’t suffered third-degree burns to the dome and attempted to attack Olstenna from behind.

Thankfully, as an experienced warrior, Olstenna was able to react in time and prevent the attack from making contact by grabbing his opponent’s limb and flipping the attacker over his shoulder.

For added vicious retribution, Olstenna even made sure to purposely twist his throw in order to dislocate his opponent’s shoulder. However, he didn’t hear the expected sounds of flesh and bone popping in ways that shouldn’t be physically possible.

Instead, he heard and felt a...distinctive amount of squishy noises.

After he had followed through with the throw and the assassin was left flopping on the floor, Olstenna and the others realized the true nature of these attackers.

^Is this guy made of mud?!^

^No, it’s...something else?^

Olstenna and the others didn’t get a good look at their attackers, partially because the room was dark and mostly because they were too busy focusing on taking them out before doing anything else, but now they could see that these guys were kind of like Zhen Liu’s zakos but with some key differences.

For starters, Zhen Liu’s zakos looked mostly humanoid and had bodies that were uniformly made from whatever scrap material Zhen Liu had used to make them...mostly.

There were some...notable exceptions...but they were still completely made of one material.

These warriors looked humanoid in the vaguest sense, with bodies made of mud that was vaguely shaped into the general shape of a primate. However, atop these bodies of mud were ornate masks that vaguely resembled jaguars.

This combination wasn’t unnerving or unusual, given their experience with dealing with the kaijin and the zakos, but the energy radiating off of this guy was definitely different from what they knew.

It wasn’t [Chaos], because their aether wasn’t getting weird.

It wasn’t aether or dragon force, because Antonio’s [Chaos] couldn’t nullify it like usual, and it wasn’t being dispelled back either.

Whatever this energy was, though, Alice wasn’t too fond of sensing it in the slightest.

Something about this sensation awoke some instinctual fear and repulsion inside the [displaced] warrior woman, and she wanted nothing more than to destroy it before it could disgust her any further.

"Move!"

"Huh? Whoa!"

In other words, Alice took a massive executing swing towards Olstenna’s opponent after kicking the aforementioned aetherii warrior several steps back. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

After he had been cleared from the attack zone, Alice swung down her [Astra] right down on the mud warrior’s neck, aiming to decapitate the horrific facsimile of a man.

It didn’t matter if these warriors were actually some new type of monster or not; they all needed their heads to function.

At least, Alice hoped that was the case.

In one fell slash, Alice cleanly decapitated the muddy warrior and sent their masked head flying. For a brief moment, she thought it was a moment of victory. In the next, she realized it wasn’t going to be that easy of a fight.

The mud body of the decapitated assassin melted right beneath her feet, proving to her that removing their heads was the way to go. However, in that exact same instance, she saw the airborne masked head starting to wiggle and release a nasty black sludge from the severed stump of a neck.

In mere seconds after decapitation, the mud warrior had reformed it’s body and began its counterattack by launching a spear at Alice’s face.

No, not a spear.

The mud warrior had extended its arm like it was a spear and nearly pierce Alice right between the eyes.

"Look out!"

"Whoa!"

Thankfully, before the worst could happen, Harriet returned the favor of the early save before pushing Alice to the ground fast enough to avoid having their brain turned into a bloody soup.

^So it’s obviously that freaky looking mask where his body came out of is their weakpoint, right?!^

^Yes!^

^Good!^

Not ones to waste a golden opportunity when it presents itself so lovingly, Antonio and Olstenna moved in to take out this revived fighter before they could become a greater problem.

From behind, Antonio swung a vicious claw into the back of the mud warrior’s head.

From the front, Olstenna launched a jet-accelerated straight right into the dead center of the jaguar mask.

In the middle, the jaguar mask was shattered into dust and the mud warrior was no more.

Now this moment, felt like one of true triumph and victory... unfortunately, it wasn’t.

It was just the prelude for what was to come.

^One down...^

Ominous swooshing sound of a dozen weird mud warrior jumping out of the ground like rabbits with burning oil on their asses.

^...a dozen more to go!^

Aside from the mud warriors that they had taken out earlier, half a dozen more had decided to join into the fray.

This new batch of mud warriors though weren’t armed with simple daggers, they had proper war clubs and jagged spears.

^Well...fuck.^

Understanding that the time for subtlety and playing pretend had essentially died, Alice, Olstenna, and Antonio decided that now was the time to go all out.

[Regalia, on!]*2

And that included Antonio.

Antonio was only an Aether Master, but he has made...rather unusual strides when it came to [Chaos]. As such, he could cheat a bit.

^Okay...let’s give this a go...[Stigma, manifest!]^

In a rather noticeable way.
