Chapter 1495: Not exactly a betrayal if you expect it.

Meanwhile, in a compound located below Rainbowden’s streets (around the same time the Ragnarockers got KTFOd)...yeah, you see where this is going...

...

[It appears our obvious spy is trying to make a move on the director’s friends, ] Razorstella noted. [Can we intervene now? Should we intervene?]

[Eh, I think they’ll be fine,] Springerdermain observed. [I think we can just—]

Before Springerdermain could finish sharing his opinion with Screamira and Razorstella, a sudden surge of drowsiness came through their connection with Zhen Liu.

[Oh...fuck...]

Thankfully, the Mysticlassic kaijin were hiding in the rafters of the underground complex, so they were able to safely pass out and stumble in their shrunken forms away from the prying eyes of would-be enemies.

[Too...sleepy...]

[Feeling...queasy....]

However, while the kaijin would definitely recover from this sudden negative status effect after some rest time, this also meant that they would be unable to assist with what was to come and befall their assigned wards.

...Uh Oh...

[So what’s the plan, Alice? Do we cause problems now, or do we pretend to be mercenaries long enough for us to get ambushed?]

[Don’t you mean, plan for ambushes?]

[No.]

After Alice, Olstenna, Antonio, and Harriet had proved their skills to Lord Tezca’s proxy, the four of them were given the opportunity to rest in one of the nicer rooms in the compound.

Well, nicer in the sense that there weren’t any noticeable bloodstains.

Regardless, once the group had settled in, they had immediately begun conversing about their next plan of action while cloaking their words with aether.

They would’ve used [Chaos], but Antonio was the only one who was remotely trained enough to do that.

Olstenna had his own thing going on in regard to his Aetherii heritage, Alice was open to the idea but hadn’t found a need to do so, and Harriet had found interest in the idea but wanted to wait until Zhen Liu had made a healer-type kaijin before asking the all-important question of having his kaijin unlock [Chaos] cultivation within her.

That stated, the cloaked whispers of an Aether Lord were still nothing to scoff at.

[I get the distinct feeling that you’re not liking the fact that we gotten this far into enemy territory,] Alice observed from Olstenna’s snide comment. [Do you think we’re incapable of fighting against Lord Tezca’s band of malcontents?]

[No,] Olstenna bluntly answered. [If that group from before is any indicator of the quality of opponent down here, I highly doubt that they’ll be worth any form of challenge. What I’m actually worried about is the fact that I’m fairly certain that Tezca’s goons clearly have their eyes on us. Did you not sense what that one weird guide was doing while we were fighting?]

[You mean leer at the three of us like we were dancers in the red-light district?] Antonio asked with exaggerated sarcasm. [Kind of hard to miss that feeling crawling up your spine.]

As warriors of decent caliber, the group was able to sense that while they were in the midst of showing those forcefully recruited criminals their place in the pecking order, their movements were being studied to an unhealthy degree.

It didn’t take them too much brainpower to put together that Lord Tezca had tasked his subordinates to keep watch on any particular warriors of interest.

Like, say, someone capable of using [Chaos].

[Antonio, I have to know, did you purposely expose your abilities because you were panicking about being attacked by an Aether Grandmaster, or because you knew that we were being watched?] Harriet asked point-blank.

[Yes,] Antonio answered. [I ain’t strong enough to fight a Grandmaster in a fair fight, and I figured making myself an obvious target would make it easier for you guys or our possible escorts to act.]

[That’s...fair enough.]

Silence fell over the room as the group decided that the conversation had come to a natural end.

Well, that and one other reason.

[Okay, I think we have talked long enough for them to think that we’re just a bunch of paranoid mercenaries who eventually got lulled into a false sense of security. So should we deal with the bastards sneaking in now, or—]

^Dibs on the first shot!^ Olstenna declared as he pointed a burning finger towards what appeared to be an empty space.

Moments after, a purple fireball shot off from his fingertip and impacted what was initially empty space. Seconds later, a humanoid figure appeared, engulfed in purple flames.

"AAAAAHHHH!"

What followed after was utter mayhem.

...Wait, wait, hold up...

Huh? What’s the big deal? I thought you said we weren’t doing these interruptions any more.

Yeah, but what the fuck is this plothole? How the hell does Olstenna even know where to shoot?

Well, keep reading the narrative and you’ll find out.

...

What?

...Okay, fine...

Alice and the others had willingly accepted the offer to rest provided by Lord Tezca’s servant, because they knew that rejecting it would lead to them getting tailed by a bunch of sneaky bastards and the very high possibility of them being exposed.

By accepting this offer, they had basically made it appear to their host and enemy that they had lowered their guards and were more than vulnerable to being spied upon.

Alternatively, vulnerable to the possibility of being assassinated.

They had assumed that they were going to be fine and be able to spend the night in relative peace, but the sudden yet silent entry of a bunch of weirdos entering the room had thrown that idea out the window.

To be more precise, as they were getting ready to settle down for the evening, Antonio’s senses suddenly went into overdrive as his [Chaos] picked up the presence of several weird enemy combatants silently sneaking into their room while entirely invisible. Needless to say, the fact that his innate [Chaos] reacted without his input was...alarming to the young warrior.

He had been told before that [Chaos] was an energy that had a mind and instinct of its own, but he didn’t think that was true...until now.

...Wait, what?...

When did we establish that [Chaos] was semisentient energy?

Kind of throughout the whole story? The kaijin are technically that, remember?

That...that statement has implications.

Meh.

...Okay...

Regardless, once Antonio was made aware of the situation, he signaled to the others that they were being watched and had them still act as if nothing was wrong and that everything was fine.

Hence why they were so open with their discussion—well, as open as one could get when using aether to make their speech patterns.

[Damn, that attack was brutal,] Antonio commented as he stared at the burning man flailing about, before several other people manifested out of thin air with killing intent radiating off them and blades in their hands.

[And things are about to get even more brutal...shit!]

Once they were exposed, the assassins didn’t waste any time in making noises of alarm or even attempt to sweet-talk Alice and the others. Instead, they simply began to move in for the kill!

The assailants had all drawn knives meant for close-quarters combat and coated them in a layer of aether. If they hadn’t been exposed, these blades would’ve easily pierced through the flesh of even an Aether Lord with the ease with which one would cut into a block of butter.

^Watch the blades!^

^Whoa!^

^Harriet, over here!^

^As you wish, mademoiselle!^

Several of the assailants made moves to stab Olstenna in the face so that they could get revenge on the Ignarii warrior that had injured their ally. However, Olstenna proved to be much tougher than they had anticipated, and the burning warrior clad in purple flames managed to catch the blades before tossing them aside. That stated, he couldn’t help but notice something was weird about the force behind the attack.

’Wait...’

Two others made their way to attack Antonio, but the young warrior managed to avoid the blows with the same grace as a cat. Once he was out of the way, he proceeded to counterattack by swiping his claws through their heads...which was unusually easy.

’That’s not right...’

The last of the assassins attempted to stab at Harriet while avoiding Alice, understanding that the former was the weakest member of the group while the latter was the strongest. However, this turned out to be for naught, as Harriet managed to dive towards Alice and give the crazy strong warrior woman from Umbral Spider a clear shot with her [Astra].

In one fell swoop, Alice decapitated the attackers with ease.

Too much ease.

’Something’s wrong!’

In that exact moment, all of the warriors in that room realized something was deeply wrong with these assassins.

’Why did it take so little effort to take them down?’

’No, better question, why isn’t there any blood?!’

All three of the warriors in this room had retaliated in brutal fashion, all three of them had used sharp implements in that regard.

However, not a single drop of blood had been spilled.

(Un)Fortunately, they were about to get the answer to this question soon.
