Chapter 492: Chapter 492: Arrival of the Imperial Kitchen

There were a few seats separating them from the original guests, and since their conversation was not very loud, the original guests could not hear them but could clearly feel the low spirits on that side.

Though curious, the group on that side were all high-status individuals, each one prominent enough to stand out on their own. Despite the curiosity, no one dared to get closer and gossip.

Seeing that Yang Chan had entirely believed him, Chen Nuo almost laughed out loud. Yang Chan seemed sharp, yet she was able to believe the nonsense he had made up, with its blatant holes and all.

Nuwa indeed found it amusing but only laughed because Yang Chan was too naive. Her own reaction the first time she heard about it was not much different from Yang Chan’s.

Chen Nuo’s joke not only left Yang Chan in low spirits, but even Fairy Baihua was feeling down.

The slight hope she had held onto vanished completely during the conversation between Chen Nuo and Yang Chan.

Yang Chan silently drank several cups of wine, and Fairy Baihua lost the momentum she had when confronting Nuwa, drinking silently without uttering a word. The atmosphere, which had been pleasant at their table, suddenly became quiet.

This chill in the air did not last long. After a while, the God of Cookery and the Kitchen God also arrived.

Originally, Sun Wukong had just brought them along to increase their numbers, mainly wanting to invite over the three fairies who were secretly in love with Chen Nuo.

Of course, he could not just invite them explicitly, as it would have seemed too deliberate. So he covered his intentions by casually inviting a few other inconsequential Immortal Officials.

When the God of Cookery and the Kitchen God arrived, they were so surprised to see Nuwa next to the main seat that they almost thought they were in the wrong place and started to leave, until Sun Wukong called them back, preventing their departure.

They walked in slowly, bowed deeply to Nuwa, and then hurriedly took seats as far from her as possible.

In reality, saying it was far is relative to Nuwa’s location; after all, there were no other seats available, but they made sure to sit at a distance from her at the same table.

As soon as they sat down, the God of Cookery quietly asked Sun Wukong, "Chef Wukong, how come Goddess Nuwa is here, too? Doesn’t she never attend any banquets, big or small? What kind of Dharma did you use to get Goddess Nuwa to join this banquet?"

"I didn’t use any methods," Sun Wukong smiled, "Goddess Nuwa has a pretty good relationship with my master. Since my master came, naturally she came as well."

The God of Cookery and the Kitchen God had only met Chen Nuo once before. Hearing what Sun Wukong said, they finally turned their attention to the man at the main seat.

Chen Nuo indeed stood out in terms of temperament, appearance, and build, it’s just that the God of Cookery and the Kitchen God had only seen him once before.

With Nuwa’s prominent reputation, the moment they saw her present, they were so flustered that they lost all concern for their surroundings. Now that they had calmed down, they finally noticed Chen Nuo, who was talking with the three fairies.

Even though he was sitting among women, Chen Nuo’s gaze was not scattered and he wasn’t continuously staring at the three fairies.

Only occasionally, when speaking to one fairy, would his eyes meet hers, and after finishing his words, his gaze would shift elsewhere, demonstrating self-control and politeness, unlike an ordinary person who would not know where to look.

The young man was dressed in white from head to toe, with dense black hair, and wore a simple silver hair crown on his combed-up hair. The crown’s style was very low-key, looking practical with no other standout features.

His clothes, too, were plain white without any patterns that should have been there and a very common style. One could say that this man, whether in hairstyle or clothing, relied entirely on his personal temperament to pull it off.

The Kitchen God looked at Chen Nuo and then down at himself, dressed in a gold-sleeved robe.

It featured patterns hooked with black and silver threads and was embellished with numerous accessories, a belt inlaid with red gemstones, and was graced with a white jade pendant the size of half a palm at the waist.

The jade he chose was the kind that could be worth an entire city, and the hair crown on his head was also made of pure gold, embedded with gemstones and crystals.

While people usually get dressed, it was as if clothes were designed to encase him, instantly revealing the disparity in their auras.

"It really is maddening to compare people; we’re all chefs, so how come his demeanor is so ethereal, as though he’s not a chef but rather a cultured scholar, while I, in this attire, am unmistakably a chef? It’s simply unfair," sighed the Kitchen God.

The God of Cookery wasn’t faring much better than the Kitchen God; he too relied on external adornments to maintain his facade.

Everything he wore and carried could buy several cities, but compared to Chen Nuo, it seemed they fell even shorter.

"What kind of person my master is, is that something you can compare to? You can’t even measure up to me, yet you foolishly aspire to compare with my master. Wait a few more years," Sun Wukong disdainfully commented on their constant comparisons with Chen Nuo, finding no resemblance and yet they still shamelessly brought it up.

"Chef Wukong, your words are quite hurtful," the God of Cookery said gravely. "We came all the way here to support you, and this is what you say to us?"

Sun Wukong shot them a sharp glance.

The God of Cookery immediately recanted, "Without us as a baseline for comparison, how else could Shopkeeper Chen’s exceptional charm stand out?"

Only then did Sun Wukong withdraw his piercing gaze, "Have a taste of these dishes, they’re all taught to me by my master."

Actually, the moment the God of Cookery and the Kitchen God entered, they noticed the dishes on the table. However, with no one to invite them to eat, even though they were salivating, it wasn’t proper to just help themselves.

Now that Sun Wukong had invited them, the God of Cookery and the Kitchen God immediately picked up their chopsticks to grab some food.

"How come these dishes all seem to use the same kind of meat?" the God of Cookery questioned as he picked up the food, "What meat is this?"

"It’s from the same kind of animal," answered Sun Wukong. "When asking, shouldn’t you consider where we are and what this banquet is for? Then you would realize what kind of meat this is."

"Rabbit meat?" the God of Cookery had already taken a spicy stir-fried rabbit piece into his mouth.

The rabbit meat was diced and first deep-fried before being stir-fried with chili peppers.

Even though it was fried first, the fragrance of the chili was not diminished; on the contrary, it was even more aromatic, and there wasn’t a hint of the distinct earthy taste that rabbit meat usually has.

"It truly is miraculous. Who would have thought that so many different dishes could be made from just one rabbit? Even if I hadn’t tasted them, just seeing them would be eye-opening. Moreover, so many dishes look incredibly delicious," exclaimed the Kitchen God, as he picked up some braised rabbit.

The rabbit was braised, coated with the unique sauce and color of braised cuisine.

Through the glistening red meat was so tempting that the sight of it alone made one’s mouth water, and the tender yet springy texture when picked up with chopsticks made one want to devour it straight from the plate.

When the braised rabbit was put in the mouth, the outer layer seemed to melt away, leaving the lean meat slightly chewy but not tough; it took only a few bites to disintegrate in the mouth, leaving behind the rich sauce lingering on the palate.

"Chef Wukong, is this really rabbit meat?" asked the God of Cookery, unable to resist his curiosity. "I have never tasted this kind of texture before; it’s nothing like the spicy rabbit heads or cold rabbit dishes that Shopkeeper Chen used to sell."

"That felt like a snack, something you munch on leisurely, but this meat clearly belongs to a main course. Whether it’s the presentation or the taste, it would suffice as the finale dish."
