Chapter 220: Lazy but Lethal ( 220 )

The cool morning air gently brushed the trees lining the dirt road between the orphanage and the town.

Hazuki walked along it at his usual half-asleep pace. His left hand was in his pocket, while his other lazily lifted as he yawned wide, eyes barely open.

Beside him, Ridan floated through the air like a relaxed skyfish—diving, looping, occasionally twirling just above Hazuki’s head. He wasn’t trying to bother him; if anything, the ghostly spirit looked... content. Free.

Hazuki didn’t seem to care either.

He scratched his butt once, yawned again, and blinked ahead.

In the distance, just outside the Macia town gate, a large heap of monster corpses formed a grotesque hill.

Even from here, he could see a few guild workers—maybe two, maybe five—moving around the pile, measuring, writing, probably appraising.

He stared at it for a few more seconds.

"Ridan," Hazuki muttered.

The floating mist slowed, hovering mid-spin. "What?"

Hazuki scratched his side absently.

"There’s a reason there’s a pile of monster meat in front of the gate?" he asked casually.

Ridan floated up, spinning once on his side before answering.

"Yeah... some of them—well, most of them—were killed by you," he said with a smirk.

Hazuki blinked, surprised.

"Oh."

Ridan circled above him like a tiny storm cloud.

"Someone was laughing like a lunatic while chopping through them last night. Pure maniac energy."

He gave Hazuki a casual side glance.

Hazuki yawned again, eyes still half-lidded.

"Oh well," he muttered.

The faint scent of drying blood hung in the air near the gate. As Hazuki drew closer, one of the guards standing there straightened up stiffly, shoulders tense and alert.

It was the same guard captain who had witnessed everything last night—the glow in the sky, Hazuki’s laughter, and the demon being crushed into dust.

His hand shot up in a rigid salute.

"Ah! M-Mister Hazuki!!"

Hazuki slowed his steps slightly, casting a lazy glance sideways toward him.

"Hmm? ...What?"

The captain swallowed hard, forcing himself to hold the salute.

"T-thank you for your assistance last night!"

Hazuki scratched his butt casually without breaking stride.

"Oh. Okay," he muttered lightly.

And just like that, he continued walking past the guard—yawning, completely unfazed, still scratching his stomach.

Hazuki kept walking beyond the gate.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small coin pouch.

Opening it, he peeked inside. A few copper coins and maybe three silver.

He gave it a light shake.

Clink. Clink.

"Hmm..." Hazuki murmured.

Ridan floated beside him, upside-down this time, watching with curiosity.

"Well... this should be enough for breakfast," Hazuki said, closing the pouch and tucking it back into his pocket. He yawned again.

"Let’s find a place to eat, Ridan. I want buns. Sweet ones. Fruity, if they’ve got any."

Ridan spun lazily in the air. "Fruity buns, huh? You really are a simple man," he wrote.

Hazuki didn’t reply. He was already scanning the street ahead.

Meanwhile, on the southern side of Macia, the guild staff, town officers, and the city overseer made their rounds near the four outer gates—each guard detail flanked by massive piles of monster corpses.

No structural damage was evident, but they had come to assess the scale of the attack—and, more crucially, count the bodies.

The smell of blood hung stubbornly in the morning air.

Guild Master Braham exhaled and walked beside the tired-looking city overseer, clasping his hands behind his back.

"Good thing two of the gates were covered by the black-haired human..." he muttered. "Mr. Hazuki."

The overseer nodded slowly, his expression tired and edged with frustration.

"The casualties among the adventurers, volunteers, and our guards... could’ve been a lot fewer if the knights hadn’t rushed to protect the lord’s manor."

Braham grunted.

"Yeah. That man’s got his own private army—thousands of them, sitting in ’gold-plated armor.’"

The overseer snorted bitterly.

"And the rifts? Didn’t even get close to that estate. Not a single monster near it."

They walked in silence for a few steps, the crunch of gravel underfoot filling the quiet.

Around them, guild staff bustled, counting, tagging, and separating corpses; guards scribbled notes for their reports.

The overseer sighed again, rubbing the bridge of his nose.

"Never thought I’d say this, but... thank God that crazy bastard was here," he muttered.

Braham nodded quietly.

"Yeah."

Braham exhaled as they approached the eastern gate, where workers were actively hauling more corpses onto sleds.

"Lucky Gikan held the northern gate," he muttered. "If he hadn’t, we’d have had a breach for sure."

The city overseer nodded slightly, boots crunching over dried blood and dust.

"Mm. And you handled the south?"

"Yeah. With a full lineup. Every available adventurer, half the town guard, and all the volunteers we could gather. Total chaos—but manageable."

The overseer glanced to the west.

"...That means the west and east gates were handled by..."

He didn’t finish, both of them turning to stare at the massive pile of mangled corpses and scorched earth Hazuki had left behind.

"...Him," Braham finished quietly.

The overseer shook his head in disbelief.

"If he hadn’t been there, monsters might’ve broken through both ends of the town. We’d have lost civilians, shops, inns..."

He sighed again, slower this time.

"I still can’t believe it. A solo human. No squad. No coordination. Just... slaughtering monsters and closing rifts like he’s taking a stroll."

Braham grunted.

"The gate captain’s report said he was laughing the whole time."

"I read that too. And the adventurer logs said he crushed summoned demons without casting a single visible spell. What’s his adventurer rank?"

Braham scratched his head, brow twitching slightly.

"...Still a newbie."

The overseer blinked.

"...A newbie?"

"Yeah. Never took the rank-up test. Says it’s a pain in the ass."

"What?!" the overseer snapped, voice rising.

Braham raised both hands with a shrug. "Hey, I tried."

"You mean the man who wiped out two entire flanks of monsters, fought demons bare-handed, and closed spatial rifts alone... is a newbie?"

Braham nodded slowly. "Yeah. Gikan already tried to persuade him to take the rank-up test. Said his adventurer plate shows he’s already level 56." freewebnøvel_com

The overseer snapped his gaze toward him.

"What!? And he doesn’t want to rank up!?"

"Yup," Braham sighed. "Said it’s a hassle."

The city overseer rubbed his face again, dragging both hands down as if trying to peel off his stress.

"...You know, the fact that this human is also our Princess Ellyna’s pinky promise partner was already a political nightmare. But now this? No wonder she chose him. No wonder she dared to make that vow."

Braham offered a small, sideways smile. "Yeah... in this world, that kind of oath isn’t something you joke about."

"If someone asked me to do a pinky promise," the overseer muttered, "I’d run away before they could even lift their hand."

"Same," Braham grunted. "It’s sacred. Binding. Unbreakable. You can’t lie under it. You can’t run from it. Might as well carve the word ’destiny’ into your forehead."

He paused.

"...And maybe that’s why that black-haired human doesn’t want to rank up."

The overseer raised a brow. "You mean because of the oath?"

Braham chuckled.

"Think about it. He can’t go to brothels, can’t chase other women. And from what Gikan told me..."

He smirked.

"...The man doesn’t even swing that way. Not even slightly."

Braham raised an eyebrow, smirking a little.

"Gikan even joked about it once. Said if Hazuki can’t flirt or touch women anymore, maybe he could try... you know—a beautiful elf guy."

The overseer narrowed his eyes.

"Wait—elf guy? You mean like the soft-looking ones? Curvy, full lips... borderline prettier than half the noble daughters?"

Braham nodded.

"Exactly those. Some with muscles, but still all fluttery lashes and sparkly eyes."

"And?"

Braham snorted.

"Hazuki looked like he wanted to vomit. Said: ’Eww! Disgusting! No way! I’m a faithful man!’ right on the spot."

The overseer burst into laughter, wheezing.

"He’s either the most terrifying madman I’ve ever seen or the most loyal dumbass in the kingdom."

Braham shrugged.

"Maybe both."
