Immortal Mythos Awakening-Chapter 68: Through the Gate of Ash
Chapter 68 - 68: Through the Gate of Ash
Morning dew clung to blades of grass as the group stood before the colossal gate at the edge of the Kingdom... a gateway once sealed by ash, now open with the faint breath of magic curling from its ancient frame.
Yuki stood at the front, his scythe sheathed across his back, cloak fluttering in the breeze. The path ahead shimmered like mirage-glass, leading into an open canyon veiled in spiritual fog. This wasn't just a road... it was a transition.
Kai adjusted the straps of his satchel, throwing a lazy glance at the horizon. "Well, it's official. We've overstayed our welcome. The Kingdom's fed us, housed us, and mocked Ren's ego. Time to go."
"I let that bread win," Ren mumbled from the back.
Haru walked up beside Yuki, cracking his knuckles. "You think the trials are done, huh?"
Yuki gave him a sidelong glance. "I think they've only just started."
Behind them, Himari paused to look back at the Kingdom. Her aura flickered slightly... a farewell gesture only the spiritually attuned could feel. Aiko stood beside her, her hand softly resting on the hilt of her new weapon. "We made bonds here," she whispered. "But we were never meant to stay."
Ashir stepped forward one last time, placing a hand on Ren's shoulder. "The next gate won't open unless the truth is spoken. And sometimes, truth can burn."
Yuki turned. "Truth about what?"
Ashir's eyes met his. "About yourselves."
And with that, the Gate of Ash roared open fully. The wind blasted outward... dry, heavy, and ancient. Their next journey beckoned, one tied to the ruins of a once-godlike civilization hidden beneath the surface. Forgotten by myth. Remembered by fire.
Null remained behind.
As the group passed through the gate, Null's eyes narrowed. He turned slowly toward the east, whispering under his breath, "Velar still stirs. And soon, the fabric between all things will crack."
The wind was different here.
It howled without mercy... raw, untamed, unnatural. It wasn't wind that whispered through trees or whistled past mountains. It was the breath of something older. Something unending.
Nogitsune stood atop a jagged pillar of stone in the void-like realm where Velar had been sealed. Or... embalmed. The remnants of their battle still echoed across the air, suspended like dying stars frozen mid-collapse. Blood didn't stain the ground... but time did. Moments shattered and rebuilt themselves in loops around him, broken only by the sound of Velar's voice from the abyss.
"I'm not angry, brother of the void..." Velar said softly, his voice like silk wrapped in chains. "I'm curious. Why do you still bleed for them?"
Nogitsune, his robes torn and burnt in places, knelt with one hand pressed against his side. His breathing was labored, but his eyes remained sharp.
"You wouldn't understand," he murmured. "Because you were never meant to feel anything at all."
From the shadows behind the remains of the embalmment, Velar's figure flickered... still trapped, but aware. Watching. Waiting. "They'll never understand the price, you know. Yuki least of all."
Nogitsune stood.
He turned slowly, gazing into the crackling seal. "That's why I'll bear it alone."
As he raised his hand, drawing a faint spiritual blade, he muttered something in an ancient tongue. With a final flash, the space began to collapse in on itself, swallowing Velar's cage deeper into isolation... hidden from even myth.
Then...
Silence.
Nogitsune vanished, his presence consumed by the dimensional fold. Gone... but not defeated.
Yuki flinched. Something in his chest pulsed... tight, cold. The group had just made camp beyond the Gate of Ash, flames dancing under the dusk sky. He looked up toward the heavens where no stars glimmered.
"Something's... missing," he muttered.
Kai, stirring soup lazily with a twig, glanced over. "That your stomach? Or the fact that we haven't been ambushed in 24 hours?"
Aiko looked over with concern. "It's Nogitsune... isn't it?"
Yuki didn't answer. But Himari, sharpening her blade near the fire, didn't need one. "He sealed something again, didn't he?" she whispered.
Kairo emerged from the darkness behind a tree, silent until now. "He sealed someone," he said. "But not for long."
Everyone went quiet.
Only the wind answered... rustling leaves like a quiet promise.
