I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 210: City of Magic
"Is the construction finally completed?"
Leo asked the two men that were standing before him.
Yang, and Ulen, looked extremely proud. It was as if they couldn’t wait to show the result of their hard work.
Although Leo had provided an initial draft of the cities, in these two years, the draft had long been thrown out the window.
These two men had truly gone beyond the draft, creating something anew. In fact, even Leo didn’t know what they had actually created since he wasn’t allowed to see either.
He even felt like a sugar daddy, who was only providing them with money, not even knowing how they were spending it.
Still, he didn’t really mind. As long as these two powerhouses were happy and distracted, he let them play around.
It was only now that they came to him, telling them that they had finally completed the cities of their dreams.
"It’s completed. And it’s exactly as I wanted it to be. You’ll be really amazed when you see it!" Yang was the first to speak.
He even grabbed Leo’s hand, to pull him away like a child who couldn’t wait to show his teacher the homework that they had completed.
"Why do you get to show your city first? Isn’t it natural that the best thing should be shown first? It should be my city, the land of magic inspired by my home."
Ulen grabbed Leo’s other hand, not letting go either.
"You... Fine! Let’s see your graveyard first. Isn’t it better to save the best for later?"
To Leo’s surprise, Yang didn’t argue with Ulen. He agreed to the suggestion, albeit still looking a little frustrated.
It didn’t matter whose city was seen first. After all, only one of them could be the winner. And as Leo had promised, the best city of the two was going to be selected as the Capital of this planet.
The winner was also going to get the right to name their city, and the city of their competitor.
Yang and Ulen hadn’t seen each other’s cities yet, so they were just as curious as Leo. It wasn’t wrong to say that half the reason Yang agreed so fast, was because he was really curious to see what he was competing with.
All this time, Ulen had shrouded his city with a mana barrier after all.
"Hmph, have you truly become sensible in the last two years? Not bad." Ulen nodded in satisfaction, as he waved his hand lightly.
A wave of magic surrounded Leo, making him rise in the air. Ulen flew towards his city, carrying Leo behind him.
Yang didn’t rely on magic. He used his own abilities, as he jumped into the air, propelling his body forward.
The three men soon reached the entrance of a large dome shaped barrier that made it impossible to see what was beyond it.
"Are you ready to see the greatest city to ever exist?" Ulen exclaimed, keeping his hands on his waist as he puffed his chest.
"Hmph, stop acting mysterious. Just finish it fast so we can move on to the better one..." Yang scoffed lightly.
Just then, Ulen clapped his hands together, and the barrier started disappearing, revealing the mysterious city that was hidden within.
As per Leo’s initial city drafts, the construction should’ve been completed within a few months at most, making it one of the most futuristic cities.
However, Ulen had gone beyond that. If anything, as if affected by Leo’s habit of wasting money, he had also wasted funds like water.
Even during war in the central regions of the galaxy and the price increase of materials, he had many important materials, including magic stones that could only be found in his home planet.
Since he couldn’t show his face there personally, he had hired other people to get these materials. And now, the final result was visible before everyone.
"This is... incredible..." Leo mumbled in amazement, as the city had truly gone beyond his wildest expectations.
It was as if the city was a mix of a futuristic city and the one filled with magic.
As the haze cleared, Leo found himself staring at a skyline that defied every law of physics he knew.
Beautiful white towers rose toward the clouds, but they weren’t anchored to the ground by traditional foundations.
Instead, the middle sections of the buildings were separated by massive, rotating rings of glowing azure crystals, the magic stones Ulen had bankrupted the treasury to acquire.
These rings weren’t just for show. They were truly miraculous with abilities that even Leo didn’t know about yet.
And there wasn’t one such building here. There were hundreds of such majestic buildings that were spread throughout the neatly arranged city.
"Beautiful, isn’t it?" Ulen whispered, his voice uncharacteristically soft, filled with a creator’s charm.
Between the floating towers, translucent bridges brimming with light, acted as both walkways and power grids.
Small, sleek transport pods zipped along these light-paths, propelled not by engines, but by gravitational ley lines etched into the very pavement of the city.
"It’s like a beautiful circuit board," Leo mumbled, the city truly reminding him of a grid.
"A magical circuit board," Ulen corrected, a smug grin returning to his face. "Those stones I ordered? They aren’t just for show. They tap into the planet’s core. They can be used to protect the city, and the core can power them endlessly."
"Even if the planet is blown up, the city would still manage to survive, and float in space endlessly, until it finds a safe place."
"I have even arranged multiple portal stones, which were the hardest to get. Fortunately, a few were amongst the items taken from the Lionel Treasury. And others were bought from outside."
"Using that, the city can be teleported to another spatial sector, albeit only once. Unfortunately, the teleportation destination is at random, so if possible, it’s better to not use that."
"The city also creates its own air, regulates its own temperature, and the barrier I just dropped? It can be reinforced in a millisecond to withstand a planetary level bombardment."
Yang let out a sharp, dismissive snort, though his eyes were shifting, taking in every detail. "A fortress? It looks like a giant glass toy. One good hit to those floating rocks and the whole ’masterpiece’ comes crashing down like a house of cards."
Ulen rolled his eyes. "Spoken like a man who thinks only with his fists. Every stone of this city is interconnected. If one falls, the others compensate. Even if I tell you about it, you will not understand."
Leo walked toward the edge of a plaza, looking down. Below the floating structures, lush hanging gardens draped from the foundations, watering themselves with mana vapor.
It was beautiful indeed. He could see the shine of rare ores in every street lamp.
"Ulen," Leo said, turning back to the mage. "The budget... I think I finally understand why the accountants were crying in my office last month. You used Star-Silver for the sewage pipes, didn’t you?" 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Ulen coughed into his hand, looking away. "It prevents... uh... blockages. Very important for public health."
"He wasted it," Yang grumbled, though he finally stopped frowning and looked Leo in the eye.
"You think this is all there is to this city? You are wrong. Have you ever heard the saying, ’tip of the iceberg’?" The old man smiled.
Leo frowned, wondering what he was talking about. "Is there more to see?"
He had barely finished the question when Ulen placed his hand on the ground, sending a trace of his mana on the ground.
Just then, an opening appeared on the ground, revealing a stairway that led downstairs.
"As I said, what you see is just the tip of the iceberg. The real city is underground. Since I couldn’t expand my city sideways, I expanded it downwards. In the space of one city, I have created ten cities for you, each at a different depth, and with a different style."
The old man smiled, looking back at Yang.
"You... Isn’t that cheating? Where did you even get the funds to create the cities?" Yang exclaimed in disbelief.
The old man smiled, but didn’t answer.
Meanwhile, Leo felt a headache coming. Just how far have these two people gone? Didn’t Ulen create an underground bunker?
The only difference was that the bunker was the size of an entire city.
Leo followed the old man downstairs, realising that he was in for a surprise.
As he went from one city to another, each at a different depth, he realized why Ulen was called the king of magic.
This man... had really created a miracle. Even when he was underground, he couldn’t feel out. He could still see a clear blue sky, and it felt like he had truly entered a different world.
It was like Ulen had used spatial magic to connect another realm to this place. However, he knew that it was almost impossible. It was probably a simpler illusion magic cast in the sky.
After the trip that lasted for a few hours, Leo finally returned to the surface, deeply impressed with Ulen.
"It’s impressive, I’ll give the old bird that. It’s flashy. It’s elegant. But the capital shouldn’t just be a museum. It needs a soul. It needs a life of its own."
Yang stepped back, a predatory glint in his eyes. He pointed toward the horizon, where a dark, jagged mountain range sat in the distance.
"You’ve seen the dream of a wizard," Yang said, his voice dropping a little. "Now, let me show you the reality of a King."
