Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 145: It’s Been So Long... Your Body Will Suffer
"What do you mean, ’hinting’? She just can’t stand me!" Serena Hughes fumed, her eyes turning red.
’Cecilia Nathan is just some nobody right now. If it ever comes out that she’s actually connected to the Nathan Family, I’ll be the one left suffering in the end.’
At this point, Serena was blinded by rage.
’She didn’t care who Cecilia was. The most important thing was to clap back right now.’
"I know you’re a coward and you’re scared of offending her. But you’re going to be the wife of the Hawthorne Group’s CEO soon. Are you still afraid of her?" Serena pulled away from May Rhodes and said scornfully, "You’re pathetic. So timid and scared of everything. With a personality like yours, if you actually made it into the Hawthorne Group, you’d be eaten alive."
May Rhodes just gave a hollow laugh, not refuting Serena’s words.
’Serena had something on her right now, so she had to let her say whatever she wanted.’
While Serena was oblivious to the implications of Cecilia’s words, May sensed them keenly.
’Cecilia... she might know something...’
Cecilia glanced at her watch and realized Damian Hawthorne had a meeting in just ten minutes.
She had wasted a lot of time.
She didn’t take Damian’s talk of marrying her seriously, of course. But he had also said he had evidence on Sharon Quincy—a more complete set than what he’d given her last time.
Damian shared her goal: to put Sharon Quincy in prison.
Thinking of Finn Hawthorne’s fate, Cecilia’s heart grew heavy, as if weighed down by a stone.
Finn had only known her for a short time, but he had become a friend she would never forget.
If it meant she could avenge him, she wouldn’t even find it repulsive to work with Damian again.
She could have used the Nathan Family’s resources to investigate the collusion between Sharon Quincy and Walter Wallace, but Linden Nathan was an unreliable element.
She was afraid Linden would continue to protect Sharon.
In the end, her only option was to work with Damian Hawthorne.
As long as it allowed Finn to rest in peace, she would do anything.
’Since Linden Nathan couldn’t see the truth, then she would have the police lay the evidence out in front of him.’
Led by the receptionist, Cecilia arrived at Damian Hawthorne’s office.
Damian was waiting for her.
Ever since discovering that Cecilia was actually Selina Nathan, Damian’s attitude had undergone a subtle shift.
The Cecilia he knew before had an ordinary background. He could use his own resources to investigate her and, when necessary, offer her his protection.
But the real Cecilia not only didn’t need his protection, but her family’s wealth also vastly exceeded his own.
The Nathans of Aethelgard were the wealthiest family in Veridia, a powerhouse that the entire nation’s business community was desperate to court.
If Cecilia’s identity were revealed, it wouldn’t just be Hugo Grant pursuing her. Every eligible bachelor in Veridia would likely come running.
There was no shortage of social climbers in their circle, and men were no exception.
KNOCK KNOCK. Cecilia knocked on the door.
Damian looked up, and an elegant, beautiful woman came into view.
Cecilia was wearing a pink quilted suit with a scarf wrapped snugly around her neck. With half her face hidden beneath it, she looked both petite and adorable.
But Damian knew she was five-foot-six, which was on the taller side for a woman. It was just her small face and perfect proportions that gave the impression of her being petite.
His gaze drifted down to her long, slender legs. His eyes darkened for an instant before he instinctively looked away.
He tapped his fingers on the desk and said nonchalantly, "You can take your coat off if you’re hot."
Cecilia, who was in the middle of unwrapping her scarf, froze.
’The last time, right here... It was summer. He had asked if she was hot, and then he’d taken off her jacket.’
’And after that, one thing had led to another.’
’That time, because they hadn’t been careful, she had accidentally gotten pregnant.’
"No, thank you. I’m not hot," Cecilia replied, the tips of her ears flushing red. Her voice was soft and quiet.
Quietly, she began re-wrapping the scarf around her neck.
Damian shot a sidelong glance at her flushed cheeks, his lips curling into a lazy smile. "What are you so scared of? It’s not like I’m going to eat you."
Cecilia lowered her gaze, her long lashes trembling.
’She wasn’t so sure about the ’eating’ part. The way Damian was now, he felt dangerous.’
Ever since Damian had mentioned marriage, the constant, tangled knot of tension in Cecilia’s heart had finally begun to loosen.
’For years, she had pleaded with him to marry her, but he had never given her an answer.’
’To put it bluntly, she had been his lapdog. To put it nicely, she was, at best, his mistress.’
’It was a love that couldn’t see the light of day. She got no respect from him, nor from anyone in their shared circle of acquaintances.’
The day Damian had taken the initiative to mention marriage, it had brought a sense of finality to Cecilia’s long-held obsession with him.
It was as if years of unrequited feelings had suddenly been resolved.
Even when facing Damian now, she felt much more at ease.
"This information on Sharon Quincy and Walter Wallace’s collusion—are you sure it’s useful? We don’t just need physical evidence; we need a witness."
Walter Wallace is adamant that he acted alone, so Sharon has practically gotten off scot-free.
Even the evidence submitted before is now considered invalid.
The only witnesses to Walter and Sharon’s collusion were themselves and Finn Hawthorne. And with Finn gone, only Walter and Sharon remain.
"It all comes down to making Walter Wallace talk," Damian said, his lips parting lazily. His eyes narrowed, revealing a hint of fanatical obsession.
"Walter’s in prison. How are you going to make him talk?"
"Everyone has a weakness. The reason Walter is protecting Sharon so fiercely is because she’s holding his weakness in her hands." Damian stood up and walked over to Cecilia. He looked down at her, his voice low and magnetic. "Come with me somewhere this afternoon."
Cecilia’s heart skipped a beat. She stared blankly into his eyes. "Don’t you have a meeting?"
"This is more important."
After he spoke, Cecilia lowered her eyes and took a deep breath. "Damian Hawthorne, I don’t have time to be playing games with you."
’What happened to Finn weighed so heavily on her heart that she couldn’t sleep at night.’
"We’re going to see Walter’s weakness."
Hearing this, Cecilia felt a pang of guilt.
’She had thought he was just trying to flirt with her again.’
She was the one being superficial.
She took a deep breath. Just as she was about to thank him, Damian’s lips curled into a wicked smirk. "And when this is all over, how will you repay me?"
Cecilia’s breath caught in her throat. "How much money do you want?"
"I don’t want money..." Damian reached out, poking her cheek with his index finger. "Cecilia, it’s been so long. Going without for too long can’t be good for you."
Cecilia was left speechless.
Of course, Cecilia knew exactly what he was talking about.
’In the past, she would have given him anything he wanted. Besides, Damian was handsome, and when it came to *that*, he had both stamina and skill. She never felt like she was getting the short end of the deal.’
’Things like that were meant to be consensual anyway, with each person getting what they need.’
"Damian... we already broke up..." Cecilia let out a long sigh as something came to mind. "Besides, I’m worried Hugo would get angry."
The moment she said Hugo’s name, the atmosphere in the room instantly turned icy.
A chilling light flashed in Damian’s deep brown eyes, and his lips twisted into a scornful smile.
"Your Hugo... You mean the Hugo who’s now a father?"
